 One of my favorite ZZ Top songs! That, and Sharp Dressed Man.

Of course I have a ZZ Top story. When I was in Boy Scouts (I'm actually an Eagle Scout) my scoutmasters were all bikers. They knew I had a pretty ####ty home life and tried to get me out of the house whenever possible. They made me a foot locker with a false bottom so I could sneak cigars and porno mags into the campgrounds whenever we had a trip. It was pretty awesome. The one thing I remember well is the three times we went to biker rallies and ZZ Top played all under the pretense of a "camping trip". To this day my mom has no clue what was really going on instead of being at camp. I actually did my first tattoo on a drunk Pagan MC member when I was 15. Great times! My one scoutmaster was huge. His real god given name was Dave Breakiron. When we actually did go to scout camp it was always with at least three of them on Harleys.

Perfect explanation for a LOT of things.

I barely have any at all anymore, just on the egg crate really. Maybe the flow is not getting into the crevices...im not concerned.

I wouldn't be. Algae is a natural thing. Did you know that corals capture and enslave cyanobacteria as well as zooxanthellae?

I think Zeph is about to launch a drone strike.

don't give him ideas, he thinks he can negotiate with nappers, that's just caffeine talking.

Nappers need to know if their demands are going to be met and when, they say by 1200 hours today they need an answer on when the drop of point will be. Or else.

Oh my...

Ya, wild child that Piggy is.

Kat, love those clammies! Hope you get to keep both of them. Now all you need is a little pink one.

Your list of things with claws is amazing!!

How goes the Alk and Ca saga???? Did you ever decide on new test kits??

Piggy, that was a great story! I saw ZZ Top way back in the day at the Forum in L.A. The band that opened for them was just getting started at the time.....Aerosmith, lol

I saw the perfect pink one on Live Aquaria too!

Alk is coming down, calcium is going up since I have calcium on a doser ATM.

Yes bought red sea test kits.

I just purchased H2o life live phyto that comes with zooxanthellae in it too.

I assumed she already had one.

Very cool. B)

I figured you'd be culturing your own by this point. You must go through gallons of the stuff!

Im practicing my DEADLIFTS today. I figure your tank is about 500lbs, and your window is 20 feet away. Does not sound impossible to me.

Its on my massive list of " things to do". If you want to breed clams you have to culture zooxanthellae. They make starter cultures by putting healthy clams in a blender. The sacrificial clam.

I've not had cyano quit yet either, I have reddish tinted (diatom looking) stuff on my sand lately, but haven't had cyano yet.. *knock on wood*. It's been 4 months.. lol

dead lifts are good for the butt. T minus 2 hours. Nappers forgot the clock turned back.

I've been asking him to culture it too. And I wanted to buy his brine shrimp eggs off of him since he doesn't hatch them that often but he's playing hard to get.

I don't mean zooxanthellae, I meant phyto. I don't understand culturing zooxanthellae, especially when clams are cultured using seawater. All they have to do is pump new water in and dinoflagellates will be there for the taking. They could also just leave an adult clam in the culture vessel. They spit out and take in zooxanthellae like mad. As for the 'sacrificial clam', the zooxanthellae all die long before they can be captured by the baby clams, as they cannot capture any when they are larvae, or even soon after they metamorphose. Only after they have made a shell will they start capturing some, before they get enough they rely heavily on filter feeding.

Hey, if my Alk is 11 and Ca 420, but my nitrates get to 10 sometimes, would a clam be good for my tank? Or do I have to bring the nitrates down some first?

Nitrate of 10ppm won't really do any harm, but unless you have a very large clam (or several large ones) you won't see much reduction.

I bought a new food, Dr. G's gut loaded mysis. I've been using Dr G's foods a lot lately and I really like them. These are gut loaded with phyto but other than that the feeding response was the same with these as with hikari. Hikari cubes are smaller which I prefer. With these, even though small, I will prbably have to chop them into two.

I beg to disagree, and so does Calfo, Sprung, and Knop. Unlike most corals, clams are not born with zooxanthellae and need to get it from an outside source. You can actually chose the color of the clams you want to grow by culturing select zooxanthellae, or sacrificing the clam that has the traits you want. Settled larval clams do ingest zooxanthellae, this is where you are wrong. If they do not they will never grow out of the larval stage. Simply sitting another live clam in the culture vessel will not work at all. That has been tried so many times and has failed every single time.

Calfo " book of coral propagation: Pg 268.

" The sacrificial clam is pureed to provide viable zooxanthellae for the settled larval clams"

I purchased that when I was there with you last time, and need more. Top shelf product, loved it for my seahorses.

You guys and your clams lately. I can't stand it any longer...had to buy another. I've had a derasa for a few months and just bought a blue squamosa. Nice little specimen you have gotten your hands on there Kat.

Ive been called many things in my life, but hard to get was never one of them. LOL. I am about to start culturing phyto and I do hatch baby brine about twice a week. I need to order more eggs, will let you know if you want in.

Blue Squamosa ? Did you get it from Live Aquaria ? I have one too.

This thread consistently hugs the very edge of decency. :o

I will try to be more disgusting, sorry about that. :P
