altolamprologus
The marine depot instructions are a typo. 4 drops is the right number. Use the check solution like you would water. Put in 4 mls and perform the test. If it doesn't come out to what it says it should, either you're doing something wrong or the reagents are faulty. Nice pic of the rainbow! Is that the view from your house? Quote Link to comment

metrokat
Alto, the standard check was supposed to measure to 6.7, it came to 8.1. Now what? Need a new test kit? Quote Link to comment
altolamprologus
Alto, the standard check was supposed to measure to 6.7, it came to 8.1.Now what? Need a new test kit? Try it again and this time swirl it extra between each drop. Sometimes there's a delay in the color change. And make sure you shake the indicator solution a lot. If you don't shake it enough it gives weird readings. Quote Link to comment
metrokat
okay trying it again Quote Link to comment

metrokat
Using Alto's suggested shimmy and shake method, the tank tested 6.4 just now. Keep in mind this is after a 10% WC with 11.4dkh water (this reading can't be verified since it wasn't done with the shimmy method. Quote Link to comment

altolamprologus
Zeph, how old is your kit? They tend to change things with each version. I've never seen instructions that require 2 drops of the indicator solution. Quote Link to comment

jedimasterben
Where have you been! This tank is on life support and you pfaff off somewhere! what did I miss, I see the low dKh. What are calcium and magnesium levels? If your magnesium is low, you calcium will combine with carbonate (your alkalinity measurement) and precipitate out. Edit: hmmm, your calcium is 480-490? That's very odd, indeed. Edited June 4, 2012 by jedimasterben Quote Link to comment
