The marine depot instructions are a typo. 4 drops is the right number. Use the check solution like you would water. Put in 4 mls and perform the test. If it doesn't come out to what it says it should, either you're doing something wrong or the reagents are faulty.

Nice pic of the rainbow! Is that the view from your house?

Thanks, yes that's my partial view, you are looking at the upper west side, the tall building to the left is Columbia.

Alto, the standard check was supposed to measure to 6.7, it came to 8.1.

Now what? Need a new test kit?

Try it again and this time swirl it extra between each drop. Sometimes there's a delay in the color change. And make sure you shake the indicator solution a lot. If you don't shake it enough it gives weird readings.

Alto, it tested at 7.0 which is within the +/- range

do I get to say my favorite 3 words now?

Not really. You were wrong. Alto is right.

4ml 4 drops.

"Gimme the clam damnit"? :)

Where have you been! This tank is on life support and you pfaff off somewhere!

Using Alto's suggested shimmy and shake method, the tank tested 6.4 just now. Keep in mind this is after a 10% WC with 11.4dkh water (this reading can't be verified since it wasn't done with the shimmy method.

Okay Zeph just because you are the defender of my nose:

4ml and 2 drops (against MY printed instructions)

6.4 also :o

Zeph, how old is your kit? They tend to change things with each version. I've never seen instructions that require 2 drops of the indicator solution.

my kit exp. date is 07-2015

my exp. date is 07-2016. Maybe there's different versions?

mine is 09-2016, they changed the instructions.

I've used much older ones at work and they have always said 4 ml and 4 drops

:( what did I miss, I see the low dKh. What are calcium and magnesium levels? If your magnesium is low, you calcium will combine with carbonate (your alkalinity measurement) and precipitate out.

Edit: hmmm, your calcium is 480-490? That's very odd, indeed.

yes, but she did it with 4 drops and again with 2 drops and got the same result. Either she is doing something wrong or the test is bad.

I don't have a mag test kit. Zeph tested for me a few weeks ago and it was acceptable, around 1250

Your calcium level is peculiar. Can you test it again? Maybe have zephy test that, too, just in case. Also, snatch me a clam while you're there. ;)

She means mag was 1250 ;)

Kat, that's slightly low, especially with a bunch of sps. You should try bumping it up to 1400 slowly
