I’m very sad to say I lost my purple firefish Trinket last week... he was my first fish loss in either of my tanks. He had sustained damage to his fins during the power outage a couple weeks ago and I returned home from Aquashella to discover that he had been further injured. At first I wasn’t sure what had happened, but on my second night back home I witnessed the clownfish attacking him... he was seriously injured and he didn’t make it. 😢 Very sorry to hear about the firefish 😞 He was vibrant and beautiful, and will be missed. It sounds like there is not much you could have done about it though, especially since you were out of town. So don't beat yourself up about it too much! Lovely pictures as always. It's so cool to see a 'nem splitting like that! It just goes to show how healthy your system is. 1 Quote Link to comment

And now my mandarin seems very lonely... he stayed by his buddy Trinket’s side up until the end... hoping to get a new friend for him soon. I’m actually worried that the nem splits could be indicating that there’s something awry in the Nuvo, since nems sometimes split when they’re stressed... need to test my water to make sure things are in check, and keeping a close eye on the tank. The clownfish sure was in heaven with the extra nems though! Quote Link to comment
metrokat
Hey pretty lady - are you recovered from Aquashella? I'm sorry about your little fishy. 😞 1 Quote Link to comment

At first I wasn’t sure what had happened, but on my second night back home I witnessed the clownfish attacking him... he was seriously injured and he didn’t make it. 😢 I haven’t seen any aggression toward Finnick, my mandarin, but if I observe any such behavior I plan to rehome the clownfish. In addition to the loss of my firefish, my pump stopped working after the power outage so I switched out my non-functioning sicce 0.5 pump for a new sicce 1.0 pump and observed a decline in my spider sponge, with the tips of the sponge turning translucent within one week of the pump change to a stronger pump. I switched back to a 0.5 over the weekend and I’m hoping the sponge will recover. On a positive note, the berghia nudibranchs have eradicated most of the aiptasia in the tank. I know there’s still at least one nudibranch in the tank because I discovered one on the filter floss tonight and placed it back in the tank and it appeared to be alive and well. Two of my nems recently split in my Nuvo 10. I rehomed them with members from my local reefing group. Here are a couple pics I took before rehoming the second split today. And here are a few pics of the Biocube and a brief video I took yesterday of the top down view with no tank lights, just ambient lighting: So sorry to hear about Trinket 😓 I remember this feeling when I had lost my Clown Goby. It was such a beautiful sight to see him perch on the corals. Ah, no wonder you were MIA for a couple of weeks! I agree with what @billygoat has stated, there is only so much one can do! You’ve always gone above and beyond to take care of the tank, so don’t be too hard on yourself. I agree — Not or a bad idea to test the water on the Nuvo 10. But for sure, the clowns did have some good fun with 2 anemones ☺️ I’ve just completed setting up my Waterbox. Waiting for the cycle to get done, and transfer some corals from the BioCube. As of now, I think it is going to be a coral only nano. 1 Quote Link to comment

I’ve been so down in the dumps after returning home to my poor little fish and somewhat destabilized tanks that I never posted any of my pics from the trip... what an experience! I really enjoyed meeting you and seeing/meeting other reefers I’ve gotten to know online. Here are a few pics, will post more later today. Hangin out with @metrokat and @Sancho at the Brightwell Aquatics booth Got to talk with THE Dr. Tim, of Dr. Tim’s One AND Only Learned so much from the Reef Nutrition ladies and they sent me home with lots of great samples Met the Reefshine Guys and got my first sticker 5 Quote Link to comment

banasophia
So I wanted to post a few more details about Aquashella. 🤗 Hotel was on thanksgiving square in Dallas, very interesting area: The Aquashella entrance... Some of my favorite things: 2 Quote Link to comment

And I posted that zebra pleco cuz I love those fish. Ironically, I was originally trying to decide between a zebra pleco tank and a reef tank... I decided against the zebra pleco tank cuz those fish are around $300... probably would have saved a lot of money overall though if I had gone that route. 😳😂 2 Quote Link to comment

billygoat
Looking wonderful as always! I didn't realize it at the time, but I think I was having withdrawals from not regularly seeing this tank while you were away at Aquashella 😄 1 Quote Link to comment

I definitely feel more engaged with my tanks when I take the time to look at them really closely, through the lens of a camera (or iPad, as the case may be). 1 Quote Link to comment

I totally understand! I think carefully observing the minute details of your small aquarium is where the real appeal of nano reefing lies. The overall look of a tank is of course very important, but when it comes down to it it's the tiny, practically microscopic details of the reef that keep us glued to the glass for every last minute of our free time. And getting the colors and light just right in the lens of a camera just makes it all the more engaging. 3 Quote Link to comment

banasophia
Strangely... Live Aquaria cannot guarantee the gender of their mandarins, or (less importantly) their emerald crabs. I’m surprised as both are easy to sex. I was planning to get another captive bred Biota mandarin from them as a companion for Finnick, but I just spoke with them and had to cancel my order since I can’t risk getting a male, which would not be compatible with my boy. Then I tried to order one from Algae Barn, where you can select the gender, but I got a message that they are doing renovations and won’t be able to ship until 4/29. Hmmm... guess I’ll be holding off for now, but Finnick seems really lonely since we lost his little buddy Trinket. 😞 2 2 Quote Link to comment
yoshii
I didn't even know you could order them from Algae Barn. Hopefully they can ship you a female soon! 1 Quote Link to comment

Yeah, thinking it over since they wouldn’t be able to ship her to me until after 4/29... will probably stick with that plan, though I may do something different... also considering a wild caught mandarin, a tailspot blenny, or I was considering a yellow coris wrasse but I don’t think that will be a good fit as they are very active and get bigger than I had originally thought. Still doing research... consulting my nano fish book, looking online, and open to any suggestions on a peaceful fourth fish. 🙂 Quote Link to comment

banasophia
Well the clownfish were certainly clowning around last night... I noticed that the yellow sun coral looked a little strange and droopy, so I was keeping an eye on it when I noticed the clowns were extremely attracted to it. I’ve never seen them behave this way toward it before, so I’m wondering if it may have been spawning... I couldn’t see it releasing anything into the water though. By the time all was said and done, one of the clowns appeared to have a swollen mouth from repeatedly nipping at it. 😳🙂 Please excuse the background noise in the video - tv was on and hubs was sawing the logs on the couch. Also posting a pic of the gorgonian, which is growing lots of new branches at its base. 2 Quote Link to comment
