I got a cheap 55g hex so I will be upgrading this at some point. I plan on keeping it as a mandarin tank but may add a pipefish pair or sea ponies (who knows?). I might not upgrade it until I move though and just store the tank. Haven't decided.

edit: sea ponies not compatible with clams

Oh, do the pipefish! I love pipefish! :D

Why aren't they compatible? Will they hitch on the mantles or something?

They try and hitch and the clam can close and crush their tail. I didn't know they could shut so hard. My dragon's sit on the mantle a lot but the clam is used to them perching and doesn't move but they just sit on the outside... they don't try and dig in its mouth.

If I ever lose the clam then maybe I can think about doing sea-ponies some day. I want to turn the 40B into a 12g NPS tank and move the corals into a 45g cube I am getting for Ivy and neither of those are compatible for a clam either so it has to stay in this tank or I would have to sell/trade it. Clam's are pretty awesome though.

I found some pics of a purple Tang that died when it tried to pick a clam and the clam shut on it. Crazy!

Ya :( I came across a few stories when checking ponies + clams about tangs getting trapped and I didn't even really believe it. I had to find pics before I believed it could happen.

Gosh...that has to suck...your prized pony sadly killed by your prized clam...

Yeah I was about to say trying to save your fish but kill your clam by pulling it open it happens to clowns even more frequently.

Ofc I got some pics too :) Btw, I can see pods all over the macro. You would think 4 dragons would wipe the pods out but macro is such an amazing hiding area for them to breed that pods are thriving.

Just an update on how the Mandy's are doing.

Gravid belly... not sure if they are still "dancing" or not because I haven't been home to check them out in the evenings.

Bones is filling out but could still use some more fat :)

This is how he sleeps after lights out, partially curled up on the rocks and his fins turn clear/white... doesn't bury himself in the sand like scooters normally do.

He loves to chill on the clam like its a bed.

Wow this tank is amazing! Always wanted to try and do something like this but never had the guts to do it! Keep up the good work!

That purple tang story is so sad!

He is still kicking, was doing a lot of pecking today and got excited when I sprayed ova over the rocks. Couldn't tell if he was eating it or just pods though.

I reefer near me also go a ruby red (female) to replace a female that died in a pair he bought in beg of october. His arrived very healthy so I think they just dropped the ball on mine :(

Here is a pic of how healthy his arrived (he is trying to breed):
