My biggest questions right now is going to be if I should run the tank BB or with sand, and if I want to attempt a one day transition.

If your thinking bare bottom, that’s where I would start, it’s easier to add sand in later than to remove it.

that said, I’m not really a fan of bare bottom tanks, but I do understand the appeal.

I have never been a huge fan either, but im also tired of dealing with sand.

Maybe a sheet of abs plastic or similar, spread a layer of super glue on it and pour sand in it. Then shake off the excess sand. Not sure if it would actually work long term though.

For the skimmer I will probably upgrade to one of the following:

  • Nyos 120
  • Red Sea Skimmer 300
  • Dalua GW-5
  • Reef Octopus S - 130

thoughts ?

I NEED sand for the proper aesthetic. Just do a light two inch layer and you'll be good to go.

Unless you plan on covering the floor with scolys 😎

Also I would get more light. You'll have a decent amount of shadowing with just a duo.

What do people think of this? I’m still unsure about which skimmer, light, and return I should get.

Congrats man!  I just recently upgraded to a Waterbox 40.2 a couple months ago, and absolutely love it!  There is nothing like starfire glass.  The people at Waterbox are fabulous too.

I was between the AI Hydra 32 and the Red Sea Reef Led 90, I went back and forth a lot, but decided on the Red Sea. I will see how I like it.....

I may keep my NanoBox Duo around and my see if I can run it on the tank as well for extra spectrum.

I need to make a decision about whether or not to have sand in the tank...

So I think I’m going to attempt to run this bare bottom.

also, I think I’m going to put a Antennata or Mombasa Lionfish in it.

So I put the Red Sea Reef LED 90 on my RSR Nano (Just to see what it looks like). I like the way it looks so far. I think the nanobox spectrum might still be slightly better but so far I’m liking this light

the fan is a bit load though...

So I like the build quality of the water box, the glasswork is very nice. I like the sump layout and plumbing. The major issue I had was with the stand delivery, it was damaged upon arrival. The only portion that seems to be at issue is the front panel. I have contacted waterbox for a replacement.

exciting! Bummer about the stand being damaged. I'm assuming you will have to wait for a replacement before setting up. Love the idea of lion fish . Can't wait to see what you do with this.

Since it was just on the front door panel, I was able to set it up, I will Just swap the door out when the new one arrives.

Going with a bare bottom on my new build too! I just know I wouldn't keep up with maintaining the sand bed.

Beautiful tank btw. Cant wait to see coral in there. Some really solid equipment too.

Well I am having another hiccup. The Artfully acrylic Clearview is too big for the tank. I ordered it for the 70:2, but it’s 1” too large in all sides. I ordered it back in June (when I thought I was going to upgrade to the 70:2 then), so I’m not sure if they will replace it.... but i hope they will since it obviously doesn’t fit the tank it was ordered for.

I decided to buy a Klir fleece roller and a maxspect gyre.

though I doubt I will need it, I may also buy another Red Sea Reef LED 90 and put them next to each other. I’m pretty sure I will get fairly high par numbers with that setup.
