Looks great there biocube buddy. If there's one thing i miss about having the top on the tank is less evaporation lol. I used to go through 5 gallons of top off every month-month and a half. Now, its like every two-two and a half weeks. Just make sure you watch your evaporation.

Woot. Should throw this thread in your signature!
Done.

Your tank looks great! WTG on the Razor. :)
Thanks! Love it so far

I know! When I had the hood on I just had to top-off once a week. Now it looks like I'll probably have to every 1-2 days

Razor, razor. Keep me updated if you see color shifts with that light. My acans all shifted to the ornage pigments under AI nano sol and maybe SPS lost some color. It bugs the crap out of me that my acans are all orangey porngy and I can't get my SPS to color back up with pure water and additives. Only thing left to change is the light. $$$ Am thinking DIY full spectrum LED, the par38 cause it's cheap at $100, or biting the bullet with this one (tho I'm one of 2 people on the planet who doesn't like their look over a tank).

Edit: I see NO talk of ponies. Where's my FIX???

That's because shitty, low-CRI cool whites, such as those used in all 'big' units, don't do reds, pinks, etc, AI units are notorious for having the worst color. I've seen better color from some generic blue/white Chinese fixtures, which are also garbage.

Jedi! Hi! Will you perty, perty please with sugar and cherries on top tell me which option I should think about (or something better--or if you're tired of repeating yourself, please send me to a link that will hold my hand, or a paypal link where I can compensate you for your time holding my hand). I want the look of metal halides in LED if that's possible. The par38 (http://coralcompulsion.com/led-36w-14k-Full) looks good because they're cheap, but I have no idea if I'm getting the right wavelengths out of them. The razor sounds good, but I can't tell if it's hype or from solid results in bringing out coral colors. I haven't seen a nice grown out SPS tank yet with the proof (maybe just overlooked?). And I'm open to going DIY if it means getting light close to metal halide and the gorgeous, gorgeous coral colors I've seen under MH.

Stay away from that bulb. It only uses cool whites (they really don't understand what 'neutral white' is so they just put a different cool white in and call it neutral), and if it does run at 36w, then it will fail within a year because of overheating. The red LED will be the first to go out.

Go for the R420R. It is the only one to include high-CRI whites in the fixture, although they are 50/50 cool and warm white, but the warm does a good job with reds. You need to adjust the two channels a bit to keep the light from looking purplish.

DIY is best, but it's not best for all setups though. Your tank is the 8g nuvo? It's difficult to get 'full spectrum' and also not be way too powerful at full blast (which is just a waste).

And to note on what is in bold - the fixture has been out for less than a year at this point. You won't find any 'good grown out SPS tanks' with it for many years. Instead, look to the LEDs themselves, as the R420R doesn't use anything special - just off-the-shelf Cree and SemiLEDs chips. People have been growing coral with those LEDs for many years now with great success, and with the right combination of a high-CRI white, you will alleviate the coloration issues that typical 'white/blue' fixtures have.

Hey everyone, I'm probably going to convert this tank to a pony fuge.

There ya go :)

So if I went the DIY full spectrum route, could I just run the lights at 30% (or whatever %) to keep from frying the coral? Where would I even start to learn what I need to know to build something better than what I have now. It would be really ####ty to go through that effort and not get results.

AFA the razor, I'd love to see before and after coral colors on acans and SPS under the new light. Doesn't have to be all grown out to tell what the light does to the coral.
