Bear's IM Nuvo 10

Recommended Posts

I figured I'd start this journal a little early so I can get some feedback on what I'm planning to do ahead of time and after that use it to track my tank/get help. I used to be on this site all of the time when I was about 13 years old in 2011 and had possibly the most annoying account in the history of nano-reef.com

@Basketball Prodigy“ (honestly don't look it up it was an embarrassing time of my life). When I moved to college I basically got out of the hobby except for helping out with my old tank back home over holidays for my parents. But now my girlfriend and I are getting our own place in May after sharing my room in a party house for the past year, so I figured now is a good time to get back into it since everything is calming down.

Here is what I ordered so far:

IM Nuvo 10 gallon

AI Prime HD (with mount)

Sicce Silent 1.0 Return

Eheim Jager 50 Watt heater

Tank and equipment should be here next week. Is there anything else I'm missing equipment-wise right now? I'm planning on setting it up and curing dry rock with a few small pieces of live rock until May then moving it to the apartment, adding sand, and going from there. The plan right now is a pair of clowns and mostly zoanthids, acans, euphyllia, and a few SPS corals. Any help is welcomed and thanks for any help in advance.

Welcome back @BearTheSquare

I like your plans to cure the rock in advance of your move. That will give you plenty of time to get familiar with your system setup and optimize your gear, curing rock is forgiving while you tinker with things.

The IM 10 is a great system. You might consider adding an additional circulation pump in the future, and maybe a media basket, but otherwise I think you have the essentials covered.

Thank you @Christopher Marks, it's been awhile!

I was thinking about adding in a koralia, but wanted to see how much flow the tank needs once its up and running before I decide on which one. I'm thinking with the sicce 1.0 I could get away with the 240 but we'll see. Also the intank media basket is definitely in the plans for some point in the future.

Yeah, no need to rush into a decision while you're cycling rock. Do you have a good source for live rock to seed your new rock? If not you might consider just using all dry rock and a quality bagged live sand instead, that's all you really need to get a cycle going and establish bacteria on the new rock.

@Christopher Marks I was more worried about a nutrient outbreak from the sand being mixed up during the move. I’ve never used dry rock in a tank before so I figured I’d just grab a rock from my parents tank back home and call it a day. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to do it with live sand though since there won’t be any fish/corals at the time.

Yeah, and given the timeline here, there will be no harm in disturbing the live sand bed after just a few months. It might be more of a concern if you were moving a tank with a sand bed that had been up and running for many years, but in this case there will be no detritus to worry about.

Went to the LFS today to pick up the dry rock I ordered last week, but all of the pieces were way too big to fit in the tank. The owner gave me a huge deal of $2 per pound of live rock and I couldn’t pass it up. I’m really liking the scape at the moment but I’m definitely worried about it being to close to the water level. I’ll try to get some clearer pics once the sand settles down.

Let me know what you think or any ideas on the scape.3BA31A2D-C96C-4137-B45F-6FF6C09B951B.thumb.jpeg.f5700bb2854c2d0e0596868b617126b2.jpegF9844A5C-0932-4591-82A7-0C6499CD33D2.thumb.jpeg.75ac2040fcd2e7571965f93ab5615cb3.jpeg
