  2. Yesterday night my clownfish started flashing. There was nothing visible on his skin. I gave him a freshwater dip. I just got home from work today and he’s got a big white something hanging off his face. It almost looks like some sand stuck by his mouth, but it’s definitely stuck on. Quick background on my tank, it’s new (like 2ish months) and all the fish are newish too. I added a cardinalfish a LFS. Then I added the clown who I got from divers den live aquaria. Then I added a second cardinal from a second LFS. I’ve added coral from local stores and that I’ve ordered online. I didn’t quarantine anyone (I know I know I should have). Both cardinalfish are looking and acting totally normal. I gave the clownfish a freshwater bath for 5 minutes last night. I know it was probably too little too late, but I wanted to do something. Nothing visible came off him. It’s my first tank and I didn’t quarantine because I don’t really have the space or money to set up a quarantine tank. WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?? What’s the cheapest/easiest but still ethical way for me to fix my clown? Aldo let me know if you need any additional info from me.
  3. After starting my membership here with a strong showing, and for my own educational purposes and record, I guess I’ll start a journal. Seems like a good place to keep a list of ideas and tips to help me on this journey! Tank: Fluval Evo XII 13.5 gallon started 1/21/2019 Equipment: Fluval spec return pump 132gph Fluval sea mini protein skimmer 5-10gallon Fluval 50W heater In Tank Chamber 1 media basket Current Orbit Marine LED light w bracket arm Current Orbit Eflux Wave pump 660gph (along w their hubs) IM mesh screen Media: Fluval bio rings (bottom level of media basket) Fluval 100gm carbon (bottom level media basket) Fluval clearmax (middle level media basket) IM filter floss (top level media basket) Stock: 14lbs live rock ? Lbs of life sand Black oscellaris clown True percula clown Blue spotted goby watchman Red banded snapping shrimp Scarlet shrimp Trochus snails x4 Dwarf red hermit crabs x 10 Star polyp x 2 (one split into two sections thanks to hermits, so there’s three-ish) Palys x 2: both protopalythoa Hairy mushroom x3 (all on one big rock) Hammer x 1 Zoa x1 Now obviously I didn’t start with all of this at once. We started with three clowns in fact- two percula and the oscellaris, but the two bigger fish kept trying to kill the smaller so I took the small guy back to save him from certain death within a week. Following that, the black was named Jolly Roger and the percula Jack Sparrow. (What can I say- this tank is “supposed” to be owned by my soon to be 9 year old who LOVES POTC, but secretly, it’s mine 😁) We started with two trochus and five hermits, but I doubled that for more cleaning power after about two and a half weeks. Those guys don’t get names. We added the goby and his “pal” Jan 22, but they NEVER hang with each other and in fact I’m not sure they know the other exists anymore. The goby was named J Edgar Hoover because he is always watching us with disapproval from across the room and follows us around the tank with his permanent frown. The pistol shrimp was named Snappy because well..... 🤷🏻‍♀️ We added the scarlet shrimp a week ago, and he’s quite the personality. We call him the Red Baron. We started the tank with a zoa and the little star polyp that the herms split in two. We next added the protopalys. Added the hammer today, with some drama due to the LFS lady who evidently thinks I’m out to kill everything in my tank 🤦🏽‍♀️. That’s it for this tank in a nutshell.
  4. @banasophia recommended I should create a journal on here. So… here we go! 😊 Hello! My name is Tyler (aka inland_reef). The ‘Tale of Three Tanks’ began with the purchase of a used 28 gallon Nanocube on April 9, 2018 (Just rounded out the 1 year mark!). Like everyone else on this forum, I got addicted to saltwater aquariums 😂 This journal will talk about the evolution of my tanks, their setup specs and my ideas for future plans. While you're here, enjoy some eye candy of my current setups below. Ill try to make this a picture heavy journal, but you can see more pictures of my tanks on my Instagram page @inland_reef . I post daily updates there.
  5. Moving back to FL soon and need to find a good home for these fish. Located in Horseheads, NY and willing to travel within 45 mins to meet up. Female clownfish is a misbar blood orange clownfish Male is a standard ocellaris clownfish Really just want to get them to a good home. Will accept any reasonable offer. Also selling Mr Aqua 12 gallon tank (3 foot long version)
  6. I was wandering the aisles of my lfs during my lunch break today, and I saw what looked to be juvenile ocellaris clowns labeled as "nano" clowns. I was told that the store's supplier claims that they are a special breed of ocellaris that have been bred to stay relatively small, however the store had not had them in stock long enough to confirm or deny this claim. I've done some research and found a few threads on other sites mentioning something similar, but they were all several years old and inconclusive. Is this a new (real) thing? I suspect that they may just be very young, run-of-the-mill ocellaris clowns. Anyways, I picked one up out of curiosity (they were fairly cheap) and I'll try to remember to update down the road. So far it has been eating well, though it looks a bit thin. Hopefully it turns out alright. That's a U.S. dime for scale, about 18mm across.
  7. Just bought a clown fish a couple of days ago. Hes wildly / aggressively swimming at the very top of the tank near the surface very quickly into the powerhead current - all day, all night long. checked my ammonia, its at 0. I also did a 30% water change this morning just in case - hes still doing the same thing. My ph is low at 8, and historically its never been above 8. (Which tells me I have too much carbon dioxide) I opened all the windows and have an open top tank - Im thinking maybe my apartment has low oxygen. However with the window open all day long - Im not sure I think its that anymore. Any ideas? Hes only eaten one pellet this morning - didn't touch the others. I'll check if he eats tomorrow. Hes my only fish in a 20 gallon tank. Tank is roughly 7 months old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHAcE_urs0c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd2KNLBArAc

  9. Hello, beginner here to this hobby. Had my clown in QT for 3 weeks and has been in my tank for 1 week. Noticed this red mark on him. He has been eating. All of my parameters are fine and he has been eating. Just noticed the mark on him a few days ago. Need help identifying and if I need to take action. The red blemish is on the lower part of face on the white marking. The mark has not spread or got worse. Tank has been cycled for about 4 weeks now . While in QT medicated with General Cure only.

  11. Hi, Around a week ago I got a Tribal blenny from my LFS for my 34-gallon mixed reef tank. My current stock was a six-line wrasse, 3 clownfish (yes, I know, not normal, but the guy I bought it from had all 3 for two years, and now I have had them for a year so they are all cool), pistol shrimp, and a cleaner shrimp. I never had problems introducing fish to the tank ever before (the clowns were the only original stock), and so I thought all would be good. Boy, was I wrong, the big female was immediately aggressive, and not even just nips, once when into the rockwork and came out with him in his mouth; on top of that, she has become increasingly aggressive towards one of her clown mates. The Blenny now takes shelter in the very back on the tank were the clowns can't go. I and probably going to return him tomorrow as they have yet to stop fighting, the big female is still searching for him as she knows he is in the back. I have several questions. 1) Why would the clown be aggressive all of a sudden? 2) Is there a way to stop this? 3) Can I get new fish or will she always act like this now? Update: Now even the medium clown is going after the blenny
  12. Current FTS - 20.11.2017 Background : I’ve been a fan of Reef tanks for ages but always was afraid to start one myself so I kept myself busy with freshwater tanks. After reading a lot about them, especially this forum, I decided to start my first Nano Reef. My initial plan was to start something small, around 6 Gallons. But after going through this forum, I saw how hard it is to keep small aquariums stable. So I decided to start with a 26 Gallon. Tank : ● 26 Gallon Custom Tank with a filter compartment in the back. Altogether around 30 Gallons. Equipment : ● Resun 1000L/h Submersible Pump ● Jebao RW-4 Wavemaker ● Resun SK-300 Nano Protein Skimmer ● Zetlight ZA1201 Marine LED Light Filteration : ● 30 Pounds of Live Rock ● 15 Pounds of Live Sand ● Filter Sponge ● GAC ● Purigen Livestock: Fish: ● Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) x 1 ● Black Photon Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) x 2 ● Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) x 1 ● Segmented Blenny (Salarias segmentatus) x 1 ● Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) x 1 ● Pinkbar goby (Pinkbar goby) x 1 Inverts: ● Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis) x 2 ● Trochus Snails (Trochus radiatus) x 5 ● Porcelain Anemone Crab (Neopetrolisthes oshimai) x 1 ● Indian Sea Star (Fromia indica) x 1 ● Maxi-Mini Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla tapetum) x 2 Corals: ● Zoanthids (Zoanthus sp.) x 5 ● Mushroom Coral (Actinodiscus sp.) x 1 ● Superman Mushroom (Discosoma sp.) x 2 ● Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora) x 1 ● Open Brain Coral ( ? ) X 1 FTS - 11.07.2016 - First Livestock Added FTS - 11.06.2016 - Tank Established Comments are appreciated.
  13. So as you can see in the title I have finally broke down and bought a Red Sea max 170 with the sump upgrade after I saw that my LFS was doing a 15% discount on them. But I haven't filled this tank yet but I will probably buy some water to fill later today, this is MY first tank, but I helped take care of one at the LFS I help out at. But basically I know I want corals, there my favorite thing in the reefing hobby. I will probably keep the Red Sea skimmer in the back chamber along with the media basket then in the sump upgrade I will most likely do a refugium. The light is a AI hydra 26, and I might get a MP-10, if not I might just get 2 korelias to tide me over till I get the MP-10. So now that you all know the equipment im running im wondering what livestock I can keep. Coral -GSP (separate rock) -Finger Leather -Toadstool -Zoas -Hammer -Frogspawn -Candycane -Elegence -Possibly acans -Later down the line a Monti cap or two. -And then any other corals that I might find interesting later down the line. Fish (I order from what will be added last to what will be added first) -Pair of Occ. Clowns -Yellow corris wrasse (favorite fish) -Yellow clown goby -Pearly jawfish Inverts - 3-4 Narrsarius snails - 3-4 Trochus snails - Cleaner shrimp Clams (later after tank has matured) -1 Maxima -1 Deresa The tank is about 24x24x24 Any thoughts much appreciated

  15. My friend has one Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish for around 4 to 5 years now (caught in the wild as one), just moved it to a 40-gallon tank. I am thinking to get her another clownfish, but not the same one. Maybe a Black Snowflake or a Black Ice Snowflake, will they be able to get along together? I like the gold nugget maroon clownfish but its different species and maroons are pretty aggressive. Any other good clownfish recommendations? Thank youuuu ! P.S. I do not know much about clownfish.
  16. I have an established 35L nano with a occy Clownfish and a Fire Shrimp. I am thinking of adding a Goby to help keep the sand clean. Which would be the best Goby to add or would this be overcrowding the tank. I don’t want the clown to become hostile to a small Goby. Thanks in advance
  17. Hello all, For the past month, I’ve kept 2 ocellaris clownfish, one caramel and one snowflake clown. Now, besides the aggressive behavior I’ve observed, Nemo and Marlin (yes, that’s their names) made wonderful pets, but I was forced to give them away. Against the advice of online forums, I attempted to add a third and final maroon clownfish (I understand this was ill-advised, and completely accept all the hate I receive in advance). You would think that a maroon clown would’ve killed the pair, however, as soon as I added a sizeable maroon clown (as big as the pair) and immediately the pair mauled it to death overnight. This left me in awe, as I was under the impression that maroons are the most aggressive clownfish. Believe me, I have completely learnt my lesson regarding more than 2 clownfish per tank, and will not attempt it again unless I manage to turn my 180 gallon planted into a FOWLR (good luck with that, says mom and dad). I have since then given them away to my trusted LFS and have adopted a nice pair of maroon clowns, which as abnormal as it seems, are much more placid than my former ocellaris pair. Anyways, my conclusion is that, as common and cute as the percula/ocellaris clowns may be, do not take them as peaceful. I understand I may have gotten an exception to the rule, however, never underestimate the feats of Mother Nature. ~Your Average 13 Year Old Reefer

  19. I got my clownfish about five days ago i just noticed that he/she has this small bump on its body, it usually stays on the left side of the tank and just swims up and down. Is this normal?
  20. hi guys about 10 years ago i had a 65 gallon reef that i loved! since moving to nyc i haven't set one up until now. which began as a very basic 10 gallon tank. a month in she started leaking which forced me to upgrade to something a little bigger but much nicer. so heres what i have. tank -IM nuvo 14 gallon heater-cobalt 100w lighting -current orbit marine led (light works great for the price and what i have for now) -finnex light (for refugium) filtration -purigen -chemipure -phosnet i also have the algae barn nano refugium kit. -finnex hob refugium i have about 17lbs of live rock i got from my LFS (pacific aquarium) 5lbs of live sand flow -sicce .5 silent pump (stock pump was too loud) nano koralia weekly water changes (about 2 gallons) the old tank is pictured first. i liked the rock work much more in the first tank. all together the tank is about 3 months old.
  21. Hey everyone, for starters I have a 20 gallon high with only 1 fish (Firefish goby). After some time (month and a half) had passed after setting up the tank, me and my girlfriend decided to add an ocellaris clown from the local petco. Yay! All seemed well after acclimation, and introduction. It's worth mentioning I did not quarantine this fish, dip it, or anything besides acclimation. I know what you're going to say, and I now have a 10 gallon quarantine tank setup lol. I had the fish for roughly 4 or 5 days when I noticed a white/faded spot near the tail, it got progressively worse and spread slightly on the other side of the fish. After quarantining and dipping the fish and medications, I lost the clownfish about 3 days later. I know brook and oodinium are relatively quick killers, and it definitely didn't look like ich, and it didn't really resemble velvet. As a matter of fact, it MOST resembled oodinium, but the fish lasted too long I feel like.. Any thoughts?? Water parameters stayed in check the entire time with ammonia staying below 0.5ppm. Thanks in advance! -Connor
  22. Hello Everyone, just showing you guys my clownfish red carpet condo 😀. Nuvo cylinder acrylic aquarium, A160WE Kessil lighting. Carpet is red and about 16-17inches across. I have had the clowns since babies and have raised a few batches of their fry. Carpet also has a little what I call baby on the side but some people say it might not be lol Either way its still cool to me. Thanks for checking it out any questions just ask. Thanks.
  23. Hi everybody, just bought this used 46l Fluval Edge on gumtree and this is what I’ve started with, hoping to get the marine pac 3 to begin my reef tank!!!!
  24. https://youtu.be/qftLal1onUg Saw the clownfish doing this all day yesterday. Who knows what they are doing? Thanks!
  25. So we have this small clown fish for just over a month now and decided to add a antenna goby to the tank. (Evo 13.5) stock everything. After a week.we notice the clown is really giving the goby a hard time. At this point the goby is stressed out he hangs at the top of the tank sucking air and his tail is bit up a lot. So the guy from the LFS suggests I give the clown a time out for 2 to 3 days to give the goby some time to make himself at home. What do you think?
