BearTheSquare
Current FTS (4-29-2020): I figured I'd start this journal a little early so I can get some feedback on what I'm planning to do ahead of time and after that use it to track my tank/get help. I used to be on this site all of the time when I was about 13 years old in 2011 and had possibly the most annoying account in the history of nano-reef.com “@Basketball Prodigy“ (honestly don't look it up it was an embarrassing time of my life). When I moved to college I basically got out of the hobby except for helping out with my old tank back home over holidays for my parents. But now my girlfriend and I are getting our own place in May after sharing my room in a party house for the past year, so I figured now is a good time to get back into it since everything is calming down. Monthly full tank shots, equipment, and livestock listed below: Equipment: -IM Nuvo 10 gallon -AI Prime HD (with mount) -Sicce Silent 1.0 Return -Eheim Jager 50 Watt heater Maintenance: Hella water changes Every other day scrape glass Fish: Black Ice Clownfish Corals: Zoanthids- Goblins on Fire Circus CB Latin Lovers Rasberry Limes Utter Chaos Gonzos Lost Boys CC Pink Constellations Armor of Gods PlayBoy Bunnies Rastas Scrambled Eggs Sunny Ds Soft Corals- Neon Green Toadstool Leather Orange Ricordea Yuma LPS- Acan Lord Green Branching Hammer Meteor Shower Cyphastrea SPS- Blue Pocillopora ORA Pearlberry Pink Monti Cap Inverts: 6 blue-legged hermits Tank set up and cycling (03-22-2019) Monthly FTS (04-22-2019) FTS after move: FTS (5-19-2019): FTS (7-19-2019): FTS (8-23-2019): FTS (9/24/2019): 5 Quote Link to comment

Here is what I ordered so far: IM Nuvo 10 gallon AI Prime HD (with mount) Sicce Silent 1.0 Return Eheim Jager 50 Watt heater Tank and equipment should be here next week. Is there anything else I'm missing equipment-wise right now? I'm planning on setting it up and curing dry rock with a few small pieces of live rock until May then moving it to the apartment, adding sand, and going from there. The plan right now is a pair of clowns and mostly zoanthids, acans, euphyllia, and a few SPS corals. Any help is welcomed and thanks for any help in advance. Welcome back. 😊 sounds like a solid plan so far. .......and you know I’m checking that account now. 😄 2 1 Quote Link to comment

Christopher Marks
Welcome back @BearTheSquare! I like your plans to cure the rock in advance of your move. That will give you plenty of time to get familiar with your system setup and optimize your gear, curing rock is forgiving while you tinker with things. The IM 10 is a great system. You might consider adding an additional circulation pump in the future, and maybe a media basket, but otherwise I think you have the essentials covered. 3 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
Thank you @Christopher Marks, it's been awhile! I was thinking about adding in a koralia, but wanted to see how much flow the tank needs once its up and running before I decide on which one. I'm thinking with the sicce 1.0 I could get away with the 240 but we'll see. Also the intank media basket is definitely in the plans for some point in the future. 3 Quote Link to comment
Christopher Marks
Yeah, no need to rush into a decision while you're cycling rock. Do you have a good source for live rock to seed your new rock? If not you might consider just using all dry rock and a quality bagged live sand instead, that's all you really need to get a cycle going and establish bacteria on the new rock. 1 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
@Christopher Marks I was more worried about a nutrient outbreak from the sand being mixed up during the move. I’ve never used dry rock in a tank before so I figured I’d just grab a rock from my parents tank back home and call it a day. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to do it with live sand though since there won’t be any fish/corals at the time. 1 Quote Link to comment
Christopher Marks
Yeah, and given the timeline here, there will be no harm in disturbing the live sand bed after just a few months. It might be more of a concern if you were moving a tank with a sand bed that had been up and running for many years, but in this case there will be no detritus to worry about. 1 Quote Link to comment

BearTheSquare
@dferrari13 Your IM 10 is one of the main tanks that inspired me to get back into it. I’m pretty excited to see it in person and get it started. 1 1 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
Everything came in today and I’m just testing out the light, what settings are you guys running over Nuvo 10s? 4 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
Went to the LFS today to pick up the dry rock I ordered last week, but all of the pieces were way too big to fit in the tank. The owner gave me a huge deal of $2 per pound of live rock and I couldn’t pass it up. I’m really liking the scape at the moment but I’m definitely worried about it being to close to the water level. I’ll try to get some clearer pics once the sand settles down. Let me know what you think or any ideas on the scape. 1 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
And here it is after everything settled down. Still worried about the top piece being too close to the water level. Let me know what you think/how to change it. 1 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
Added 6 blue legged hermits, which is going is all I’m adding until I make the move. 1 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
I’ve been wondering if my current scape is too high or if it makes too much shade. Is there any way I should/could change it when I move? Any help or advice would be awesome since my moving date is coming up very soon, which means I’ll be able to add some corals in a few weeks. Also sorry for the clickbait 1 1 Quote Link to comment

BearTheSquare
@WV Reefer thank you, I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to change it at some point 🙂 1 Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
Found about 5 or 6 baby aptasias in the tank and I’m wondering what the best way to go about killing it. I’ve used aptasia x in the past but wasn’t a big fan and didn’t think it really got rid of them. I have been thinking about a bhergia Nudibranch though, so if anyone has used/has thoughts on them I’d love to hear them. Quote Link to comment
BearTheSquare
First zoa frag is in the tank and opened up quick. Was supposed to be a gift to my parents back home, but turns out the tanks not doing too well so looks like they’ll be staying. Not sure if the pictures look decent or not (definitely need a gel filter), but enjoy the first picture that’s not just a box of rocks in this thread. 1 Quote Link to comment

They are not an economical solution for just a few aiptasia. Is it possible to remove the rock the aiptasia are on and treat them out of the tank? 1 Quote Link to comment

Aiptasia X seems to work better on larger individuals, at least in my experience. It's kind of hit or miss though. Those Bhergia nudis definitely eat Aiptasia, but unless you have a giant infestation I would not recommend paying what it costs for them as they certainly don't come cheap. You could try smothering the anemones with superglue; I hear that's pretty effective, though I have not tried it myself. 2 Quote Link to comment
