It definitely helps with nutrients. Some people can't stand it,but my tanks have always been BB besides my first 2. Just blow your rocks occasionally and you'll be good !!

Thanks man im thinking of going BB i went with sand in my small tank it just got dirty quick

so im thinking BB in my new pico

So far I like it. It's my first BB tank. It definitely stays much cleaner. Like everything though, it has it's pros and cons.

The pros are obvious. Easy cleanup, no sandstorms, no crap getting built up in the sand.

The cons are. Can't keep sand sifting fish or inverts. You don't have sand as a extra bacterial filter, and in my opinion the look. I'm one of the people that love the look of sand. I think a tank with beautiful, clean white sand is awesome.

I think for a pico it's cool, but I wouldn't be able to set up a big tank without sand. You can also use starboard to mimic the look of sand and go bare bottom.

So I haven't updated in a while. Today is the last day for pics over at R2R for the contest. I decided to take a couple quick pics. The contest was only a couple of months, but it was cool to document the growth. In those months my torch split and is working on another head, acans popped out a couple polyps, zoa's also grew a couple polyps each, and have about 5-6 new rics from splitting. I don't think that's bad for a couple months! Well here all some pics :)

Dayum, your definitely cramming the goods into this one, looks great under actinics.

Thank you!! Now that the contest is over I'm going to go crazy with it. I think I'm going to sump it!

I'm sad the contest is over. I woulda thought the mods would have gone to each thread that continued to qualify and said something to note that they've noted we made entries. Or at least posted a list of continuing contest tanks on the main thread. Oh well.

Yea I wish they would tell us which tanks are in the final running. I think i followed all the rules, and would be bummed if something was missing.

Alright tank is getting sumped!! I don't mind the canister filter, but i think a sump will work better for the tank long term. The biggest thing is I would like to add a siimmer to the tank. I have a spare 10 gallon here at the house. Also have some glass for the baffles.

I think I'm going to get a better skimmer for my big tank, and use the pls100 for this tank. Kinda big for this tank, but it's free so why not. If I run into nutrient problems I'll just run it on a timer.

I'm going to start looking for a used Mame today. I think this is a better option for the tank. I don't want to drill the tank!

Soooo. Does anyone know how to make a oscillating return pump? I would like to have some wave action and random flow in the tank. I don't want it to be like it is now. Its just direct flow from the return of the canister. It's not ideal. It's worked so far, but I would like to get a better flow pattern.

Good idea!!!

Or do you?

;)

My LFS uses these on their DT I think:

I have also read that people use the IM Spin Stream and like them

Thanks Ark!

I've seen the slip streams and what not. The problem is I'm going to put a Mame on this. Wouldn't be able to use anything like that. I've seen some people modify return pumps to make them oscillate and make wave patterns. I need something like that. I could have sworn there was a tank on here that was running something like that. Time to do some searching!

I was originally going to say the same as Ark and suggest doing a spin stream, but that definitely won't work with a mame.

How about using something like this?

Or for a bit more $$, this one gives you a little bit more controlability:

Thanks Randy! The jbj one looks promising. I would have to see what type of return pump would work with it. It would have to be a pump that could handle the constant on/off. Might work though! I could have sworn I saw someone who made a wave pattern return with a Ardruini controller. Have to look it up.

Mine is only like 5 heads in, but when it grows a little more I'll send you a head.

I got a 6 header one for $120 and I lost half at the 6 month mark. And the rest perished around the year mark. I was suprised. It was like a clam. One day it was super happy looking then the next day I was staring at skeleton. :(

But thanks! I'd appreciate that. :)

I'm sure it is very possible and not too hard to do with an Arduino. A raspberry pi controller would probably be even easier. I just thought you would be looking for something pre-built. If you do go the DIY route, it definitely would be better, as you could make it do whatever pattern you want. With that JBJ one, it looks like you pretty much just get 10 seconds on, 10 seconds off. While this would still be better than just steady flow, it definitely is not nearly as good as a random or sine type oscillation. If you choose to go DIY, definitely check out the raspberry pi controller. It has gotten very popular for being easier to program than your typical arduino microcontroller.

I guess LPS can just be finicky like that. I had that happen with a nice Toxic green hammer too. Happy one day, dead and stinky the next.

I wanna say Jinx on here, did a Audrino based DIY conteoller for a pump for his 2 gallon and it pumped out some nice waves. I had the parts list and what not but idk where I put them.

Cool I'm gonna look into everything now!

Nice tank! Your torch is BEAUTIFUL!!

Thank you very much!!

Thanks! Going to look for it now. Your right, I remember it being a little deep blue tank! That's the build I was thinking of.

That's the one. Idk what happened to that tank,he just like disappeared. I can't rememeber what pump he was using,I believe it was some 5v pump of some sort if I'm not mistaken.

2 more days and we find out the winner of the nano in 90 contest!!

I hope I followed all the rules correctly. The suspense is killing me!!
