I've been reading this thread for a while now, but never realized you only live about 2 hours from me! I just flew out of YYC Saturday.

Really? Where abouts are you? North or South?

those hermits look so tiny and actually kinda cute

Haha, they're pretty neat actually.

As an update...

I'm very happy I added these dwarf hermits to my tank. I read so much on hermits prior to getting my CUC and it was mostly negative feedback. One thing was bold and was repeated everywhere: hermits + snails do not mix. However, my trochus and turban snails are all about the size of a quarter. Pretty big guys! These dwarf hermits are micro sized! $1 each, and they're less than 1cm in size. They were on the sand for a bit picking at algae there - but they've discovered the rocks now and haven't left them for the past two days. Very cool, I may add 2 more small ones of different species. (Red tipped or blue legged dwarf hermits. Same size.)

The Emerald crab is pretty docile so far. He's really made his own spot in the rock. I never knew this spot was there, but he sure found it and he seems to like it. It's a small hole that actually goes INSIDE the rock and thru it to the other side. I'm happy because where it comes out from is where I have all of the bubble algae. He's picked at it a few times but it hasn't seemed to disappear yet. Fingers still crossed :)

In other news... my larger clowfisn has an odd growth on one of her fins. (One of the two on the sides, not sure what these are technically called.) It's strange - I can't seem to find any real diagnosis on google of what it could be. It is the same color as the fish's skin and it just kind of like a flakey growth hanging off the one fin. It's pretty small but noticeable. It's not white dots, she act/ looks normal, poop is normal, she eats normal, sleeps normal.. not sure what it could be but I'm just leaving it to see for now..

Tonight I may finally be upping my filteration setup and installing the media rack :D

Day 101!!!

Can't believe I made it past 100 :) Love it!

As you can see, the hammer coral has remained the same size since my last big update. I noticed it's much smaller than it was in Month 2 versus now, but perhaps its just the way it is and before it was just reaching/ extending a lot to get nutrients or light??

My baby emerald, he likes to hangout in every hard to find crevice and just pick at algae.

I must say - between my emerald and two small hermits - I've got stringy green algae anymore they've pick i all!! Except........ the emerald hasn't touched the bubble algae much yet :'( Some aiptasia too, maybe I'll toss a peppermint in and see what happens ?? .. maybe..

Here's my upset for the past few days. My female clownfish has gotten a weird growth on one of her fins :( I have NO idea what it is or what it could be - any thoughts? She acts completely normal, eats normal, poops normal, swims normal, sleeps normal, and hasn't been any different! That piece is very "skinny" and flaps around just like her fin does.. almost like a second fin? NEMO?? :(

My guess on the hammer is that its getting more light than it was use to before, and is limiting surface area. Looks healthy so I'd leave it be

Tank looks great, keep it up man

Benign is like harmless. Usually used to describe tumour where a benign tumour can be a fat, liquid build up, or a weird flesh growth. Malignant is cancerous. But can be used in some contexts to mean harmfull

This is where I think it got smaller

In this one its a lot plumper in the area

I think I've moved the hammer / rotated it a bit as sometimes the shrimp digs it up lol (Last time maybe 3 weeks ago).

Perhaps why it looks smaller in that one area but I also think it's just not "stretching" out as much as it used to. Might be less dependant on light now that it's grown a bit?

The smallest head on my hammer popped off... like, it doesn't appear as though anything "sliced" it or "cut" it - but it literally came OUT of .. I guess bone / structure? Almost like pulling a tooth out - there was nothing left inside where it was before. It literally looks as if it came out on it's own....

Sadly, it landed on one of my Acan's mouthes .. and it began to try to swallow it whilst most likely being stung. Hopefully the Acan makes a recovery, I'm not so concerned about the head as it was the tiniest one that isn't visible.

I skipped my WC this past weekend, I'd like to continue to try to push WC's out but I don't think it's possible with this bioload.

I noticed yesterday (before the hammer fell out) that everything just seemed a little less lively. So I did a good 40% WC last night and scrubbed down the glass, tried pulling some bubble algae out but ended up probably popping some, so I tried to siphon out the spores.

Also - My green ricordia florida has been shrinking lately. Placed it back down in the sand, maybe getting too blasted up that high on the rock?

Also relocated my frogspawn to the back left corner on the rock, behind. It's not really visible when look straight on when it's closed at night.. but I think when it's fully extended it should be really nice back there. I'm really hoping the clownfish take a liking to it as it's now in their main area.

I copied your clown choice and picked up a mocha for $30. What did you pay for yours?

Also, when did you start to get coraline algae?

My rocks were fully live rocks so it was already covered in algae's and such... kinda regret it though :(

It just came over time, I'm almost 4 months now so.. it came fast after I added my Par38 though.

Awesome on the clowns mate! I paid $40/each from my LFS :)

So some bubble algae popped ? You should really thing about taking the rock out and scraping it off. If anymore of that stuff pops in the tank, that's really not good. That stuffs nasty !!!

I went with Florida live rock on my last tank and the algae became insane. I gave up on removing it after a while.

I've seen euphillia do that before, hate it you lost it. Definatly keep up those WCS, you've got a great tank, it'd be a shame to start getting algae problems, or worse.

In the coming weeks I'm going to get a time-out quarantine box in the tank for the clowns so that I can actually get arms-deep in the tank for a little bit. I'll move the frags from the rocks and place them in the sand during night while they're closed up. Then I'll take both rocks out and scrub with a toothbrush and pyroxide.

Is it okay to rinse the rocks under the sink faucet regular water after the scrub, and then place them back in the tank? Or do they need to be rinsed in SW/ Distilled??

If this works I'll keep them back in the tank for a few weeks and see if the algae comes back. If not, (or if so) I'll pull them out again and scrub down. In the end, glue all corals right to the rock to make it nice :)

After the scrub, pour hydrogen peroxide on the areas that had algae. Let it bubble for a few minutes before washing it off and returning to the tank. I would think you could use regular tap water but you might get a mini cycle if you wash the rocks for a long time.
