Kijho's Fluval Spec V - Retired (almost)

Do your goby and shrimp still make caves or do they just improve their current caves. I'm worried my shrimp will make my tank into a bunch of little holes in the sand bed haha.

If you go some pages back when I first got the shrimp - he initially turned my sandbed into the himalayan mountains.

Hahaha... he had holes everywhere beneath rocks, moved rocks, moves corals... he one time took a ricordia in his burrows lol. Had to get that out... was fun times.

Now he's settled though and has been in that far right side "cave" he made for the past 2 weeks. I think adding the crab shells is what made him stay as it's become very secure and structured for him. Before, the powerhead would blow sand back in his burrows over time.

Clowns tired from attacking your hand?? haha

Love the new corals btw, i see you got a little ricordea garden going on there.

Thx mate!! I am gonna have to try to find some sort of quarentine box for my clowns.. thinking of maybe a small in-tank breeding box to just hold them for a little while - as I go in and do some work. I'd like to kill some aiptasia and also cut the plugs off my frags and begin gluing some of the acan's down in that left side in better positions.

Tank looks great!

Thx !! :)

B) Hope you guys enjoy.

In other news.. I've had my tank at 77-78*F pretty much since I got it... however, I just did some quick researching on pretty much every coral in my tank. ALL of them have a range of 72 - 78*F. Jeeze... the night my tank dipped down to 72*F I panicked so much I thought everything was going to freeze to death LOL... but that looks like an acceptable temperature. Obviously the major swing isn't good, but having the temp. between that range and possibly going up/down a few degrees might not be as bad as I've been thinking all along..

I'll aim to maintain 77*F but right now it's at 76.8*F.... I think that's better than 82*F lol. Have got my fan setup pretty good now to keep air flow pretty moderate around the tank.

Looking to get some of the Acan frags out and put them in a vise carefully and dremel off the plugs. Then use some superglue or coral epoxy and glue them down on the left side rock along it. Should really tidy things up....

First step will be getting an in-tank breeder box to capture the aggressive clownfish in though when I go arm-deep into the tank... I'm not a fan of the biting/ head nudging.. startles the crap outta me and water gets everywhere lol.

~ Cheers mates

Dang spencer, this looks awesome! I'm a big fan of the frogspawn for sure. Also have you had any issue with the hammer coral stinging the ricordeas? I would like to get some hammer coral at some point but I am afraid it will be to close to another coral and sting and kill it.

Thx CSwan! :)

I haven't had my hammer reach my ricordia's yet.. it doesn't really extend much at all. I read online that at night it has some sort of "sweepers" but I've never seen them. My hammer does the opposite I find - it's completely retracted into the skeleton once the lights go out.

The Frogspawn however expanded a fair bit.. quite a bit more than it looked in the LFS. It's got a nice spot though as the rock above it will protect my Acan's on that side. Right now it will touch the rock when fully extended.

I'd definitely reccomend any LPS like frogs / hammers / torchs... I didn't get a torch because I do fear those will extend the most of the three and it's such a small tank.

You getting your Goby soon??

Ah I gotcha ya. I may get a hammer in the future, they are so cool looking.

Also, I hope so, I have to call my LFS today and see whats going on with it. so much waiting... <_<

Yeah hammers and frog spawns are my favourite they are so puffy and colourful. Trons is by far the best I've seen. They are affordable to. Clams at my lfs are not lol

I definitely need to get a hammer coral soon! I want one that has both pink and green tips though. Ive seen them around my local LFS but I have yet to pick up a piece for my tank yet

I am gonna be relaxing now for a while on the spending on new additions.

Planning on getting a new car so finances will be a little tight.

However - before I go budget mode, I made one small purchase ;)

intank media basket and skimmer! (Because I noticed the sponge is infested with bugs... ew.. probably not great. My water's not VERY clear.)

So will be doing CPE, Purigen, and filter floss on the top that I will change weekly or so.

Should give me CRYSTAL water :D

Link to comment

I have change my filter floss out every couple of days

If you dont want to cash out 40 bucks for a media basket, you can easily make it if you have some spare eggcrate and zip-ties. Mine didnt cost me a thing to build :D

Link to comment

How much is your filter floss nano? I need to find a huge bulk supply of it to change it that often. I saw like 4 filter pads for $8 on intank that's insane expensive

Link to comment

You can get a 2'x2' piece from BRS for about 12 bucks. I had lots left over from past aquarium projects so it was free for me lol. Its really easy to make stuff with. Each square is like 1/2" and it snaps pretty easy if you get good at it, just eyeball the size pieces you need and ziptie everything together. Here's a pic of the one I made for my Spec V. I literally just snapped this pic lol

photo11.jpg

top to bottom I run

Filter floss (not shown in pic, I didnt cut a new piece to fit yet) (replace every 3 days or so)

a 2 layer filter pad (replaced once a week, if that)

Chempure Elite

Purigen

My media is a couple months old so it's kinda dirty lol. I'll change it out towards the end of this month, a 3 month life cycle works fine for me.

Spencer, my lfs sells it in bulk. I can get a 2'x6' piece for about $10. This usually lasts me a couple of months

Link to comment

Hmm... Do I need to run a pad + floss? Would I be able to get away with just floss?

It's like $10 for a 3 pack of filter pads...

That will add up quiiicckkker than my coffee's in the morning haha

If I was you,I'd just get the egg crate from either BRS or Home Depot. And some zip ties. Make your own media rack. And you can make how many racks ect.

I just made my own for the AC50 I have out of some unused blood tube holders from a lab and it worked out PERFECT !!!

Day 81:

Currently in the process of doing a WC. Nothing new really, I managed to find a way to keep my Clowns away from my hand when I put it in the tank. I used my fish-net (small) and just put it in the water right in the middle and they were too afraid to go near it or around it so they would stay on one side of the tank while I did work on the other haha...Perfect!!

So I managed to zap 2 aiptasia while doing the WC. I also moved another one of my Acan's to a hopefully better spot! It's up closer now near the top Acans.. maybe I'll snap pics later once everything opens as it's not happy right now haha...

I also removed the metal bracket from the old Spec V original light. (The white LED's and the 2 blue moon-light LED's.)

I specifically wanted to use it for moon-light during the evening hours / early morning... So now I've got a moon light!! It just sits flat on the top of the lid of the tank and I will just turn it on/off when I want.

Everything glows SO amazingly under it.. it's dim enough to not light up the full rock very much but the color I think just makes all the corals pop .. Will try to get a pic. If you want a moonlight I'd suggest it forsure!

Took some nice pics - coming soon!

Working on a VERY big project right now (Hint: timelapse) but it takes alot of time and editing. LOTS of time though.. some clips are 30 mins long shortened down to under a minute of corals opening up!! Will be done in a few weeks maybe!

Here's a pic of how I actually kept the clownfish on one side of the tank while I did work on the other side of the tank.

They're super territorial and defensive now so this worked perfectly at keeping them away from my hands for a while.

Nice man! can't wait to see your time-lapse. I have been planning and stoked to do a time-lapse of my tank but was waiting to have more in my tank to have in the video. excited to see it ;)
