Kijho's Fluval Spec V - Retired (almost)

I feed my tank H2O life 5050 plus(can't insert link for some reason), about a half cube twice a week. The clowns really seem to flip back and forth on what they go for. I have a hard time telling the brine from bloodworms but they seem to like them all. Makes feeding easy as one cube gives a big variety. I am going to start with reef snow once a week too.

Hmm if the tank gets too got take a water bottle and put cool water in it and float it in the tank should help combat heating

How about a video of the clowns?

Soon!! Maybe this weekend! :)

Day 69:

Woke up this morning to see something in the tank decided to have some fun in the sand and literally turned over all of my Ricordia's.

Damnet. Things just aren't going well this past couple of days in there. Can a Ricordia be broken? The under-side of the very large middle on looks like it broke.. the skeleton I guess? But... I'm not sure Ric's even have skeletons? Could just be the rock it was attached to, which was then glued to the plug.

Damn these frag plugs suck. I like the Rics in the sandbed though... I don't want to move them really...

Link to comment

rics dont have skeletons and sometimes they will close up or twist themselves into weird shapes

Are your Rics on frag plugs? Or just on the sand on the left side of your tank? I wanna line this entire tank in colorful rics and acans haha..

Can an Acan and a Ric be touching / next to each other? Or will they have a bad time...

Apparantly, Acans will kill Rics. Keeping them spaced apart but my Ric garden may wrap around the front to the left side of the sandbed in the tank.

It's payday tomorrow and then I took next week off for vacation to just relax (not going anywhere cool but just hang with friends at home) - this may or may not result in many trips to the LFS.

did you see my post on cheap rics? 10 rics for $60. But I am not sure if they ship to Canada....

My rics usually come on frag plugs but I pop them off so they are loose on the sandbed. It all depends on how they are glued to the plugs. Sometimes I can't pop them off so I just cut the plugs smaller.

Yes I love your ric garden man. So nice. I'll just cover everything in the tank in frags and leave no room for pests to grow hahaha....

Few shots of my Acan's tonight after feeding some mysis. Video coming shortly :)

(Not the best video though, my clowns were super lazy today... I think the bloodworms fill them up super quick compared to the micro pellet.)

Haha thanks guys! I finished rendering and then laughed because it seemed so dramatic and almost scary.. especially the closeup of the Goby protecting the cave him and the Shrimp share hahaha...

Couldn't resist haha... I'll do some more soon!! Lots more corals in the next week I think. Wanna get this rock covered!

If you look at the rock while I'm feeding the acans you can actually see SO many diatoms crawling around. Creepy. haha

WOW :o My favorite video from you yet, nice job spencer! Thanks for posting, I enjoyed it. Also really happy your goby made an appearance, I feel like haven't seen much of him lately. Also, your acans, are those just mysis/brine your feeding them? And do you have to feed acans or is it just for added growth/color?

Thank you!!! <3 I'll hopefully do few more this week. Tons of updates!

I feed them once every while. This was the first in a week or so. Mysis and blood worms is what I gave them here. They suck them up and down them really quick. I think it helps me plump up really big... they always seem to get that way the next day when I feed. (When you feed they seem to get smaller though digesting I guess?)

No need to feed them though at all. Like most, they're photosynthetic so they live off light and they also have tiny tentacles that can extend out and get little particles floating to eat sometimes!

Shrimp went to town last night.. pulled one of my ricordia's down under the rock kind of in his burrow.

My other ric he pulled and just left it wedged between the rock and my hammer. My hammer didn't do anything to it though like I would have expected. It closes up over night though so might be why.

Managed to move them both back this morning and was able to extract the one ric from under the rock very simple actually without messing anything up!! Tweezers were perfect. Was kind of like playing a game of operation haha..

So I've put these two ricordia's now on the right. Will see how they are when I get home.. they might end up staying there.

He didn't touch the third ricordia yuma - only the florida's. The yuma is on a rock though. Going to figure out my arranging this week possible add more acans and rics :)

Day 70:

Goby doing what he loves to do.. sit in-front of the cave entrance. *cough* video coming late tonight!! *cough*

I don't think I've shown off my VERY shy brittle star yet... I've literally never seen him before. I just sometimes see his legs hanging out of the rock here.. he's been there since I can remember but he's getting some color and also getting a bit bigger. I hope one day I can get him to actually come out of there...

Blurry closeup of my green acan

Well, things are on a downward hill with my birdnest it seems. It's still hanging in there and fighting the battle though. That left stem has gone completely white however. Sad :( Hope it makes it but this time around I'm not sure it will...

As I posted earlier this morning - my shrimp had a party last night and pulled my two florida's into his cave. One was super scrunched up, and he tossed the other (smaller) one out and it was hanging from a branch of my hammer ... lol. Luckily they all looks alright and happy in their new spots.

Also - see that MOUNTAIN my shrimp has done? Damn guy... he's a PITA but he's cool so he can stay whatever...

The main crew <3 love them

I've spotted the clowns going beneath the rock/ arch lately. Makes me happy because I think it means they've become very comfortable. They love the right false wall, they usually just surf up/ down that wall. EXCEPT for when I bring out their food. I have no idea how they know, but they sure as hell know when it's about feeding time. You'll see later tonight/ tomorrow depending when this video uploads!

I made a new separate flickr account to host all of these. 1TB of space to fill, should be fun. Much better quality!

Have you thought about testing phosphates and magnesium ? Phosphates can be killer for sps,I know personally they don't like them. From going from page one of this thread to this page, everything else seems to be fine and somewhat stable.

If Po3 is high and your salinity is swinging, that birdsnest won't last too long. I know this from when I kept mine,I killed a couple of my frags this way. Also,I personally think the 3 fish in such a small tank may play a large roll in that too. Maybe try a couple 50% + water changes and keep a eye on it. Everything else looks amazing though, truly a awesome little tank.

Thanks mate!

Haven't tested either of them. Hopefully have no Phos' though. I know the Birdnest did so incredibly well and made a huge comeback a few weeks ago. I think what's really done it though is the temp. swing I had few days ago there when it first lost color. Happened pretty much over night. Everything else was perfect, all my tests so I'm not sure. Probably phosphate or something. Maybe I'll try a 50% WC this weekend and see where that goes. If not it's okay. SPS might not have been the best idea for this small tank :(

I would see if you could snag a po3 test,it's a must. Same with mag. Temp swings are deterimental to sps. As are a lot of things. When I had birdsnest and Monti's in my 5 gallon cube, mine grew like weeds. They don't mind small amounts of nutrients, but swings in temp, salinity and alk are not good. You have some color left in the polyps,so as long as you can keep things stable it'll recover.

If you get a Mag test, try to keep it around 1400,and calc at 400-/+ a few ppm,but wherever it is,keep it constant. That's the key to keeping anything really.

I'm writing all my test results down in a notebook with dates,so I can keep track of my parameters. I eventually want to keep some sticks (sps) in my tank. I'm aiming for Acropora though and some birdsnest. So the stability in the long run is my goal.
