hmmm they do look kind of similar! maybe once they get a little bigger they will get a better color pattern.

so just got home and dad had the snails floating in my tank. all i ordered was a few soldiers to help battle cyano and keep my sand clean but john at reef cleaners sent me an army!! i will definatly be ordering from them again!

pics (sand looks absoutly horrible)

Wow definitely did send you an army! I was down at a LFS and asked them about bad algae as I am having a hair algae outbreak and he said to buy a media bag and use Seachems Phosguard in there. Might be worth a shot. You just change it out with fresh stuff if you notice it starting to come back.

If those snails are similar to the freshwater ones they tend to bury under the sand. I have 4 of those in my FW tank and they moved and uprooted a bunch of my live plants. Might want to keep an eye on them moving your frag plugs around. I have Nerite snails in my SW tank and they seem to do a pretty good job. They even cruise across the plugs when I had them and they were spotless the next day. No corals hurt or moved so far.

id love to get some phosguard but its so expensive for a little jar. right now im just running carbon (got a bunch for free) and it is helping. not much but my phosphates have gone down.

im hoping all these snails have a field day plowing my sand lol. the only frag i have in my sand on a frag plug is the duncans. which after i moved them a week ago havnt really opened back up..think they are having a hissy fit. but im not worried about them knocking anything over.

also! i noticed what i am hoping are just pods crawling around a couple of my zoas. they are very hard to see. about the size of sugar ants or even smaller. kind of a clear/light brown color from what i can tell. should i be worried about these?

I believe those are amphipods I think is the spelling. Do they almost look like little sand fleas? like this http://cdn.saltwaterfish.com/6/6f/6fe65199_Amphipod1.jpeg or this http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3640/3668029951_e9a44e6df4.jpg

I wouldnt be worried about it. Only things you really gotta watch for are aiptasia and nudibrancs. I run filter floss, chemipure and rubble right now just to fill space. Going to replace the rubble with phosguard soon. Might be worth the extra money to wipe that out. Ill let you know how it does in my tank.

Wasnt sure how to post the pic from google sorry for the links

Yeah I have them crawling all over my rocks and everything is fine. They are beneficial scavengers. I have found this site to be helpful in figuring out what those little buggers crawling around are. http://www.worldwidereefers.com/forums/showthread.php?4768-Hitchhiker-id-guide

I would suggest dipping corals before placing them in your tank. I have yet to purchase anything since I got melafix and seachems reef dip but Its very beneficial as Ive heard some horror stories of amazing zoa gardens being destroyed. Im still fighting aiptasia at the moment and my pep isnt seeming to be interested in the last one in my tank. Hoping he will wipe it out tonight.

I'd say off a guess that your snails got a little busy during the night time hours. Haha I'm not 100% sure though. I guess you will find out in a few days.

Looks like your off to a good start. 4 weeks and the frogspawn is still happy so you must be doing something right.

I think people get to freaked out over the uglies at this stage and try and clean the tank too much, which makes it inhospitable for corals, so don't make any major moves and all should be ok. It might be a good thing you can't afford any phosphate remover. :)

thanks! hopefully im doing everything right lol. yeah i dont care too much about the uglies (except for that cyano.. ugh lol). but i figured bump up the cuc and let everything do its job. should disappear eventually right?

Yep, might take a month or so but mine eventually vanished. I'm no expert, I killed my 20 around this time, and I was adding phosguard and carbon and purigen and all kinds of crap. Still not sure why it died but right now your 20 with the uglies looks happier than my old 20 ever did. :)

haha well im surprised my tank is doing this good so far. the only problem im having is my duncan is still all pissed off after my last water change a week ago.

They will do this, and many times you'll see new heads appear when they are happy again. I had some nice purple Duncans in my 20 when it crashed and they were pissed until 2 weeks ago, now open and happy and growing in my 46. That was 2 months of pissed off. Duncans hold grudges.

You're so busted you just ordered a bunch of stuff online! Tank looks good. Yea those white dots look like nerite eggs to me. I've never had any hatch and grow up but I'm sure something enjoyed the snail omelette. And those hitchhikers are starting to look badass! :D

Link to comment

hahaha yeah i fianly broke down and ordered online. no one carries the par38 bulbs around here and the snails actually cost me less than getting them at the lfs. the hitch hikers are definatly looking cool. i wish they would color up more.

i work at a grocery store and we use to have a lobster tank a long time ago but we still get the kits for the tank. since we dont use them at work they let me take them home for my tank. its probably not the best carbon and salt in the world but its been working so far.. plus its free =]

Awesome man. The wait is what always kills me when ordering online. Glad to see it arrived. Good luck on building the fixture. Keep us updated on the build would like to see the progress.

Will do! Planning on making the stand today. Only problem is we have a bad storm hitting us right now amd the house has no power. Cant even test out the bulbs yet. Oh well. Hopefully it will be back on soon.

Look pretty good. How is the corals liking it? Leds are a lot brighter and the before/after pic really shows it. I actually got some new pics up today of my tank. The rbta decided it was going to expand fully. The rbta is a little bigger than a cd now.

so far so good. think its a little too high at the moment. ill let it run its full cycle all day tomorrow and see if the corals are stretching for light or not. i just love how the colors pop and glow.

i was actually just looking at your thread. your rbta is growing very nice. almost makes me want one.. almost. lol
