frags
I am getting my settling tank today and the concern that I have been thinking about is that I am going to collect detritus in the overflow before the settling tank. The system will be display-overflow coast to coast with herbie or bean drain- settling tank-skimmer chamber in sump. The flow in the tank will be somewhere around 2500 gph the flow of the sump and return will be about 500gph. The overflow will be about 4"x4"x19". I thought about putting a small powerhead in the overflow but that would be a pain! Any suggestions? Quote Link to comment

frags
Just turkey baste the overflow in your weekly cleaning... Well that's a simple answer. THanks Quote Link to comment
Deckoz2302
Yep haha. To make it even easier, cut some poly filter to lay on the very bottom of the overflow. That will catch it all, then remove it every couple weeks and replace 1 Quote Link to comment
Grimmpls
I never heard of using a settling tank before. I'm a tank to sump kinda a guy I guess Quote Link to comment
frags
So here is the tank it's pretty cool. It is some heavy grade material. It also has a measure on the side upto 15 gallons, which is perfect because I will be doing about 10 gallon water changes. One thing I do not like is at the bottom there is an edge before it will drain out and I thinks going to catch detritus when I am emptying the tank. The stand was built before I knew about these settling tanks which I think for the type of system I am building it will be huge!... thanks to Shane the reef geek and Geoff and also another guy that does not post anymore they are on TRT forum their posts help me to learn about this idea of conical settling tanks for detritus. The problem my layout was not anticipating the tank so know I have to do some re-figuring. If you look at the picture where the cone is sitting now that was going to be the sump location and its a 40 breeder. In the picture now the cone is there and it is next to a 20 long which might be to shallow for that skimmer and I will have to raise the display that is on the other side of the wall next to the cone. The shelf above was going to be for the 20 long that would be eventually a frag tank but until then just more water volume.Any Ideas or thoughts? 1 Quote Link to comment

frags
Hey guys it has been awhile I had a little time to work on things today and I built and area for my water changing station. I also have decided the location of all the tanks so know I can finally start plumbing! I moved the cone down it was sitting higher with the bottom in the plywood hole, but I decided to have it lower so I can experiment with plumbing the settling tank. Quote Link to comment
frags
Finally got to some plumbing today I drilled all the bulkheads They took forever 8 holed total and they took 12+ minutes to drill each. 1 Quote Link to comment
frags
I got some plumbing figured out to connect the 2 tanks. I had a real hard time figuring out what to connect the 2 tanks at the same level with!! I could not hard plumb the 2 incase one shifted and would pop the glass at the bulkhead. I used a part you would use to repair pipe and I think it will work great it has some give I also have the stand built for the settling tank! 2 Quote Link to comment

frags
I worked on the manifold tonight and got most of it glued together. I also got the bean drains done for one of the tanks. The manifold will control RODI, Salt mix, drainage from the cone settling tank, siphon hose and will be connected to an external pump. The plumbing is all 1". I also have and extra a valve to empty the manifold if I need to remove the pump. I did plumb an extra stub for something in the future, does anyone think of something I am missing to this? frags
wish I had these when I drilled! I rigged this up...Looks like that would work cool! I usually just used it to start the hole. That is some serious plumbing going on there. No Buckets everything done by turning a few valves!!! Quote Link to comment

frags
So I have made some headway recently on the plumbing I am almost there! This shows the main area that will control most of the flow to the pump. The valve on the far left will be saltmix, the next valve is rodi, the open slot is going to be for a siphon for cleaning the tank, the next is an extra for the future, then the settling tank drain, finally the pump. The valve on the far right of the pic is for draining the manifold. This picture shows under the settling tank where you can see the pump! Closer look of the far left. This shows the flow coming from the display into the frag tank also return of water to display from sump. Overflow of frag tank Overflow of frag into settling tank. Finally settling tank into sump 1 Quote Link to comment
