Hey violinist, your tank is looking awsome. I really like your rics and zoas. Well my tank is still verry slowly developing haha. I switched out my power heads and added an mp10( this thing is awsome). I just have one question, you think is enough flow to reach to end of the tank?. I will post some pictures when I can. Oh and by the way your a violinist, I'm a guitarist haha. Oh and again awsome tank and good picture taking skills

Hey thanks, Titos.

I played guitar for about twenty years. Thought it would make violin easy (it's just a small guitar right?) but boy was that wrong lol. Helped having an ear, but that was about it.

MP10 gets plenty of flow to the far end of the tank. Don't be afraid to crank it up either. It wasn't until I turned it up that I started seeing growth on my birdsnest, and the softies don't seem to mind. I put the lps in lower flow areas and on the far side and they are happy. The zoas are spreading like mad sitting in the undertow.

Come back and link your tank thread when you get it going!

Hey Violinist, what bulbs are you using in your sundial? Unfotuantely I had to switch my halides out for T5's (long story) and I'm now using a sundial myself. I've been playing around with alot of bulb configurations and currently I'm using 2x's ATI aquablue special and 2x's ATI blue+. I'm not sure if this combo will prduce much growth out of my SPS, but the colors look great. This combo is the closest I've been able to come to the coloration of my radiums.

looks good man...is that a strawberry psudo? looks great though keep it up

Honestly it's more of a purple, then a dark blue under the actinics. Just looks pink in the pics for some reason.

These are geisman bulbs, two actinic+, one pure actinic, and one 6000k midday.

I need to make a comparison shot of my birdsnest, it is really starting to grow. That's the only sps I have tho...

Hmmmm, i haven't tried my geisemann bulbs in this fixture yet... Just out of curiousity, how yould you describe the coloring from the 6000k? I had a UVL aquasun in place of one of the aquablue specials but it gave the tank a pink tint that drove me crazy.

I went from a 150w MH fixture straight to these bulbs, so I can't really give much of an opinion on how they look compared to other combos. I don't notice a pinkish tint to the tank. It's a fairly crisp white/blue light when all 4 bulbs are on, and then when just the actinic+ and pure actinic pair are running it's all bues and shadows and glowing corals heheh.

I feel like your tank needs a clam :)

How's life going? Your tank is looking pretty good? The dotty seem to be doing ok?

I sorta feel like I should get rid of all my fish expect my maroon and call it a day lol. Fish are a pain in the butt.

A clam is a ways out for me still lol.

The dottyback is great. It is only aggressive to the one hyper-aggressive damsel. Otherwise it spends its time scanning the rocks for pods. Very cool fish, such a hunter.

This weekend the plan is to tear down my freshwater 20g hex and get it setup for fowlr. Going to paint the back panes black and just run with the ####ty hood fluorescent for now. No way my wife will go for me using my clip-on MH on this tank since it's in the family room, so not sure what light options would be viable if I ever did want to add corals to it. But that's a long way out, if ever.

Either the clowns or the damsels are going to move to this tank once it's ready for them. I'm thinking the clowns since I find them retarded but everyone else likes to see them. My 20L is in my home office which is sort of my sanctuary, so I'm the only one who really sees the tank. The family room hex is obviously a different story.

Anyway if I ever get out of the car dealership here, that's the day's big plan.

Ya.. as I was reading this thing, I was thinking that you should stick the clowns in there. Clowns are pretty stupid. BTW, my nems are moving :scarry:

Hex is stripped down. Only blacked out the rear pane, not the rear 3. Didn't think it was going to look good with half the tank black and as I look at it I think I made the right call.

Gotta pay bills.

Gotta do the 20L water change.

Gotta brew up another 15g of salt.

Then maybe some pics...

Well the 20 hex is up and running. Waiting for the sandstorm to die down before snapping some pics. I love the scape, but the thing I've always hated about this hex tank is even more annoying now - damn silicone seams!!

Was going to put one of my spare hk's in it but (not a dig at you hk guys) I'm so damned spoiled with the mp10 the thought of cluttering up the tank with that big ph is not appealing at all.

Not even sure I really need another flow source for fowlr, but I keep find myself thinking about how nice some corals would look in here lol. We'll see how soon until this becomes another money pit.

Hi,

I also have a 20L and I am debating about getting a skimmer. Do you recommend me getting a skimmer too? Do you notice any benefit with using your skimmer.

People argue both ways on it. It's working for me is all I can say. The skimmer pulls a lot of gunk out of the water and I've never had nitrates or phosphates read above 0 on the test kits. That's with 5 fish who eat well. Wish it were quieter but it does seem to work as advertised.

Last night I hit the tank with a flashlight, it looked like it was snowing baby pods. I have seen a bunch on the glass before, but never a storm of them filling the water column. Incredible to see.

Curly Joe Reefer

Very cool tank. I really like the 20L for aquascaping purposes. I'm also pretty amazed that the 24 inch fixture is sufficent for the 30 inch tank. I was thinking of going up to a 20L, but i was worried that my light wouldn't cut it. I learn something new everytime I look at nano reef.

good to know, I'll be looking into getting one, quite a gorgeous fish, and a welcome splash of colour too.

The pictures don't do it justice either. It has an iridescent colorful area that shimmers along its dorsal fin when it hovers around. It's really neat to see. Under the actinics it goes to a deep blue color. It's a mad pod hunter also, constantly scanning the rocks and snapping at pods.

In between kicking damsel ass that is.

Yeah the light works great. Quite a few of us 20L owners have this fixture. There are 3 inches on each side of the tank that are not directly under bulbs, but the fall off is not that bad. Plus figure you are leaving an inch or two on each side empty anyway so you can get your scraper/mag float in there. I stick shrooms/rics on the sides and they are thriving.

Left Isle (btw, this is the 'real' color of the dottyback finally):

This is what I was hoping for when I placed the zoas. I want a carpet of zoas covering that area, and here some of the colonies are finally starting to grow up against each other:

Spreading, spreading:

Enjoy!
