SPS Canyon: ELOS Midi

Recommended Posts

Some of you guys may recognize my old build thread, and remember that I was contemplating changing my system to a Reefer 170. I ended up going a different route, settling on a Ultum Nature Systems 60U. I've spent the past few weeks assembling a stand, building a new sump (with a frag compartment), and figuring out how to incorporate a doser system into my tank. I unfortunately suffered some coral STN/die-off after a huge bacterial bloom halfway into working on my new stand, but fortunately the bloom resolved and the corals are slowly recovering.  Accidentally broke Mame, picked up ELOS MIDI as current tank.

Stand: (45Lx24Wx30H) Assembled from 2x Ikea SEKTION Cabinets (Veddinge White) with Birch-White Washed Butcher Block

Tank: Ultum Nature System 60U (~24x14x14) with frosted background ELOS MIDI

Flow:

-2 MP10s on Long Pulse Mode

Sump: Repurposed Mr. Aqua 11.4G

-Ice-Cap K250

-Sicce 2.0 Return Pump

-Innovative Marine Desktop Reactor (80ml Carbon)

-Tunze Nano ATO

Frag Tank: De-rimmed 6Gallon Fluval Edge

-El cheapo return pump and powerhead

Lighting:

-ATI 4x24W Powermodule: 2C+, 1B+, 1 Giesemann Super Purple

-Nanobox Duo for Frag Tank (100% Blue, 33% White)

-Nanobox Mini for Chaeto/Refugium (100% Blue, 30% White)

Dosing:

-Marine Magic Doser  CoralBox Wifi Doser with Aquaforest Component 1, 2, 3

Without further ado, here are the pictures:

Thanks JR. All I want right now is for things to recovery and start growing/coloring back up again. :(

Looks great!  Such a fun list of equipment, I can't wait to see it grow.

Love this minimal branching/pillar scape!  So much open volume in the display tank and still lots of surface area to attach corals.  The MAME overflow with the clear back glass really adds to the open feel.

Me neither. This has been a hectic half-year with parameter swings, contamination from fumes, and coral die-off. I'm praying that large feedings and keeping my hands out of the tank will facilitate the recovery of my corals back to their former glories.

The MAME+Frosted/Clear Background is definitely one of the best combos I've experienced. I've experimented with a black background with the MAME in the past but it just felt "off".

WOW!! That's unbelievable!

That's how I felt when I saw the tank. It blew a lot of the public aquariums I have seen out of the water (no pun intended). The fish were fat and happy; impressively the SPS corals were huge and had amazing coloration!

Please excuse the egg-crate dinos. They appeared within 3 days of adding the eggcrate into my system. I've ordered some acrylic frag racks to replace these dino magnets, and they should be in either later this week or early next week.

I also picked up some cool sps frags. Can anyone help me ID the green deepwater one and the blue one?

Well I basically crashed the system on May 13th, after a 5 gallon water change. I woke up the following day to all of my SPS bleached and some were also peeling. Later, I found out that I had dropped the plug end (live) of my ATO into the tank, and it was all oxidized up.

This picture was taken 5 days before the crash: 33699925483_3b3c9d7ae2_z.jpg

After the crash occurred, I lost some of my SPS pieces, but most of my other corals and all of my fish pulled through. I took the opportunity to rescape my tank, in a way to maximize surface area for SPS mounting. Here are some current shots, a lot of the SPS are still browned/paled out. Fortunately, everything looks like they are recovering, and are coloring back up/growing.

Things in the display have been slowly recovering, and I've been filling up my frag section with Aquaculture minicolonies. Hopefully they will do well in the long run.

Incredible setup xiao.. Love the minimalistic approach and aquascape. Not sure how I missed this but great job and I'm glad to see everything is on the mend.

Nice system. Looks like you have some good size replacement frags in the rack. When are you moving them into the display? Do you dose, kalk, or combination?

Sorry about the SPS loss.

Beautiful tank, sorry to hear about the losses. Unfortunately these things happen. Some of those mini colonies in your frag tank look amazing. :naughtydance:

Sorry about the SPS loss.

I don't think I'm going to move these mini colonies into the display system. I already have duplicates/replacement SPS placed in the display tank. I plan on growing the mini colonies in the frag system out, without the harassment of inverts and fish.

I used to dose AF Component 1,2,3, however dosing is on pause currently. My dkH consumption dropped significantly after the crash, and dkH consumption/coral growth hasn't picked up to the point where I have needed to resume dosing. I'm testing dkH twice a week, and plan on resume dosing when dkH drops by ~1 dkH a week.

I got a little trigger happy 4-5 weeks back with dosing, and unintentionally bumped dkH up to 10 from 7, over the course of 2 weeks. While my dkH is slowly coming back down, I definitely don't want to make that mistake again.

I'm excited to watch the mini colonies encrust. I am slightly worried because these are Maricultured colonies, which have a reputation for RTN/STNing during the transition to aquarium-life.

The vast majority of SPS we get here are maricultured and IME they are pretty hardy. :) Keep things stable and try not to frag them for a while and I'm sure they will be just fine.

Sorry to hear about some of the mishaps, but it's great to see an update. This system looks beautiful and it's great to see that things are on the upswing!

How are the Ternate Damsels mine are really aggressive now that they are almost fully grown.  Every time I move corals around I get attacked.

That's good to hear. I plan on keeping my hands out of the tank, and letting things do their own thing.

Thanks! Mishaps are discouraging, but rebuilding is fun. I'm just praying that the mishaps are over.

Cake (the yellow damsel) is super chill. The only things that go after my hand my clownfish, named Asshole 1 and Asshole 2.

Jesus, I can't catch a break.

I had a scare today when I got home. My display lights were completely off when I got back home from work, which is odd given that they were still supposed to be on at that point during the day. Panic set in, and I checked the power supply unit. The indicator light was off, so I chalked it to a burn out PSU.

Luckily, I had a replacement PSU (from a previous light) of the same voltage and amplitude and swapped it out. Well, the light remained off after swapping PSUs. By this point, I'm really freaking out because I'm worried that I will be without a light. I took apart the driver box, and found a loose wiring and fixed it.

I'm proud to say that the lights are back on again. Hope that never happens again....

I lied previously about not mounting the SPS into the display. 6 days ago, I cut frags off of them (to keep in the sump fragtank) and mounted the mother colonies in my display tank. I also grabbed some Polybio PolyFilter to run in my tank, in case of heavy metal leaching from my semi-rusty MP10 wetsides.

Also woops, loaded these images into the wrong flickr account LOL.
