Don't want to offend anyone tank.

It's about time this first page is updated.

A little background. The original plan of this tank has put to a screeching halt. After surviving the hurricane, the tank crashed due to neglect. Since then, the tank was completely emptied, cleaned, and moved to an area that is more visible and easier to perform maintenance on. I lost almost everything in it. Since then I rescaped, ditched all sand, added some equipment, and restocked. Okay, now onto the good stuff.

As of 10/1/13

Equipment

2x mp10 ran on reef crest at 50% and one led under 50%

Steve's led DIY

Basic stick-on moonlight

Cobalt titanium

Reef keeper lite (on the way as I type)

Ats, being built and should be in the tank by 10/5

Obvious return pump, the name escapes me.

Extreme misbar clown "nakey"

Fridmani psuedo.

I figured I would start a new build thread now that things are coming under way. My current ten gallon shelf will be taken down and used as a sump.

Good luck with the new tank !

Thanks Albert! When are you starting a thread on your tank? You should do a kind of buddy system between your thread now and that one. Post the going ons of your tank, then post the information that you want to include for everyone in your existing thread.

that mp10 and tahitian moon sand arent going to be a good combination in a tank that is so short. even in my 16" tall tank, i have to position rocks juuuuuuust right to deflect water from hitting the sand bed and making a wicked sandstorm.

I was afraid of that. I was thinking of making a fake sandbed 2/3s of the way through the tank and then using real and underneath that rock slope for the pistol and goby. Do you think that could work without looking cheesy?

What do people typically use for water movement in these tanks? I know I've definitely seen them with sand before.

The only thing I think that would fit the bill with such a short tank and a fine sandbed would be Koralia Nanos, but they just don't have the sleek look that the MP10 does, nor do they have nearly the performance (even on minimum, my MP10s @ ~250GPH beat the pants off of a 425GPH K-nano).

Oooh, that hurts. Is there any coarser black sand available? I originally wanted black sand in my current tank and just got white instead, I don't want to make that mistake again

Only one I know of would be blasting sand, but you don't particularly want to use that with saltwater. :/

Pat, Manhattan Aquariums has heaters large and small, and branded ones on clearance (used) for about $5

That's a deal. I've been meaning to take a day off for the city. Is there always deals like that, or is it far and few between?

Jedi, what about this Hawaiian sand? It's made my caribsea, and is .25-3.5 mm. The moonsand is only .1-.3.

Thanks patback .. that is actually a very good idea .. I had not thought of doing it that way,

Maybe I can go back in the current thread and create links in the new one to the beginning of the tank and then once I have all those in there I can continue in the new one and put links in the current one.

They have halides on clearance for $50! I just missed out on a doser for $25, they have tunze powerheads for cheap too. LMK when you are planning a visit, Beefcake and I will meet you there hopefully. I mean Zeph, Zeph!

Lmao. Beefcake :haha:

I think I still have your number on my phone, I'll save it and when I head out there give you and mr. Stud muffin a call. Your store is so much better than mine, they sell used tanks for like, 10 bucks less than they are brand new. They don't even bother to scrape off the coraline.

Hey !!! Whats going on in this joint???

Hi Pat. Good job on the stand construction.

Beefcake ?? LOL......that made me laugh. I think she meant to say "meat loaf"

However, I did recently have a date with a woman I have not seen in 28 years. She was my very VERY first girlfriend I ever had, and she was convinced that I grew up and became a porn star. B)

My TMS is actually a bit larger than they advertised, it is almost all .5mm instead of .1-.3. The pic of the Hawaiian Black looks like they zoomed in quite a bit to show the shape.

...and she was convinced that I grew up and became a porn star. B)

Was that before or after the date? :naughtydance:

Must be the "I <3 clam avatar".

Pat! Sorry for the hijack.

I like a fun thread, no need to apologize. As long as people talk about my tank when I post new stuff and there is no personal attacks, I'm game.

I've always been jealous of how popular your thread is :P

So do you think that would be heavy enough to not get blown around? I'm hoping that the Hawaiian may be larger than advertised too, if that is the case.

Worst comes to worse, I guess I can always try it and go bare bottom if it gets picked up. The two main things I wanted was a murdered out tank and bad ass powerheads... It will suck if I can't have both :(

You Became A What Zeph ... ? If you did I am sure that the clams are enjoying the view ! :+)

Fun apart .. discus pics remember ?

Yes I do like the way you describe the scape, and how you will set it up. Which reminds me that I definitely need to do something with mine ...

Are you going to run this thank the natural way? Minimal filtration, and minimal equipment, and let the rock and the sand do all the work for you ? Or if not, what are you planning to use> Thanks

Link to comment

Most of the filtration will be live rock and macros. I probably won't use a skimmer, but I do plan on using carbon and purigen. I also would like to add a good amount of seachem matrix and give that a whirl and see my outcome.

Look forward to seeing how it works out ...

I don't have a skimmer either and find that my DOC keeps going up even though I have carbon in the system.

Also even with lots of water changes (RO/DI) I am seeing a second batch of diatoms appear and my CUC's are not getting rid of it.

I am going to have to figure out what is actually going on

That is one thing I am worried about, diatoms. My dry rock is professionally cleaned, as per johns word, but I am still not sure if diatoms will occur.

I am hoping with my existing rock plumbed into the system, that there will be enough food for my clam, water will be kept clean enough for my sps. I have had 2 fist sized pieces of dry rock in my tank since I opened the box and luckily, it still looks super clean. Hopefully it stays that way untill coraline takes over. There are so many variables however, that there is no way of knowing the outcome.

Diatoms are a fairly natural part of the process, you'll get some as nitrate and phosphate rise from stuff breaking down (especially food)
