Took some more pics today, turning off the Koralia for just a few days has done amazing things for my tank! The mushrooms had all but vanished, and are now coming back in full force!

Striped nano star out for food during the day!

And running from the camera.

The mushrooms I thought were toast.

Biggest ric (3 mouths when I got it a couple of weeks ago, 4th splitting off now).

IMG_3425.JPG

Fish whoring for food (complete with YWG on his usual perching spot).

IMG_3429.JPG

My ric rock with single mouthed rics (one of which is starting to split).

Some of my new blue zoas.

Orange/green zoas.

And yes, I do have a stray aipstasia, first one in a long, long time. Time to break out the syringe and lemon juice!

Your goby looks like a banana

I'll have to get a pic of my urchin when he comes back out into the open, the tips of his spines are turning a real pretty coraline type purple, it's cool!

Love the new pictures. Your clownfish reminds me of a panda bear in one of the pics...so pretty!

Your nano star looks just like one of mine too

I hope my mushrooms perk up like yours!!!!!

I worried about my koralia hydor 240 causing too much motion, too, but switched the direction of the BC's standard flow to dampen some of the effects. My mushrooms are doing really well, but I'm wondering if it's because I have my koralia timed with the lights? Sort of mimicking the softer winds at night (could be total b.s. of course!), I have the extra flow turn off so that for 16 hours, the tank just gets the water movement of the standard pump that comes with the cube. I haven't lost a single mushroom, and a couple of disc-shaped ones get HUGE during the day -- I've never measured, but one looks like it stretches 2 1/2 inches across. I do have one ric that I think doesn't like its spot much. May try to move that one as it's right in the path of a very strong current.

Beautiful tank, by the way!! :D

Thanks! I'm happier with my tank now than I ever have been, and I attribute a lot of it to cutting down the flow. I think if I had lots of SPS it might be different, but for simple softies the MJ 900 return seems to be perfect.

As usual when I get really bored, I mixed up a giant batch of margaritas and dove into the tank. Did a bit of re-arranging, mostly trying to get the rockwork just a little more stable. We'll see tomorrow how it looks.

 you sound like me. I need to learn to keep my hands out of the tank, especially after a drink.

After sobering up and reviewing my new 'scape, it's not terrible, need to adjust my flow again to stop sand excavation.

Edit:

I'm an EMT, graduated top of my class. I scored in the 99th percentile on my ACT, SAT, and military ASVAB tests. I consistently excel in both academic and practical pursuits, and am generally regarded by those who know me as possessing above average intelligence and common sense.

All that being said, I'm completely retarded. I was rotating my return nozzle trying to get the flow pattern just right, when I discovered, over a year and a half after setting up this tank up, that it can be angled in addition to rotating. I was convinced the whole time that it was a once piece assembly that had no secondary adjustment capability. Wow. This really excites me for some reason :slap:

I'm thinking of getting rid of my koralia hydor 240, getting a stronger pump, and adding a splitter to the water valve so I can mix up the direction and get good turbulence. That's what the lfs does on their bc14, and it is gorgeous. They were sort of shocked when I told them I bought the koralia. Not sure I like it either, though it does seem that the tank responds well to more turbulence. I have to point it blasting at a spot on a piece of rock so the sand doesn't go everywhere. I get enough of that with the sand-sifting rainfordi goby! But it also means I can't put a piece of coral across most of that piece. Unless there's a softie out there who wants very high flow.

Pics of the new scape?

Haha I have a similar recent retarded story. I was switching pumps and put the stock in a bowl of water where I had been getting nuisance algae off. Got everything installed and went to plug in the new pump.. but accidentally plugged in the old pump and it squirted water all over me and in my cabinet with the electrical stuff! SH****T. Hit the main power button and dried everything off well. Luckily nothing was damaged. :slap:

I've done something like that, felt so dumb

msscha...if you do this, I'd be interested to see what parts you use. I've been considering doing this on my tank as well, but I'm not sure what parts I will need.

I've worked with Loc Lines before, they're pretty easy. Not sure off the top of my head, but I'd guess our fittings are 1/2".

1 set of 1/2" hose segments: http://www.marinedepot.com/Loc_Line_1_2_in...IFTLLHI-vi.html

1 1/2" Y: http://www.marinedepot.com/Loc_Line_1_2_in...IFTLLHI-vi.html

2 1/2" nozzles: http://www.marinedepot.com/Loc_Line_1_2_in...IFTLLHI-vi.html or http://www.marinedepot.com/Loc_Line_1_2_x_...IFTLLHI-vi.html

Will have to see what the best way to connect the return to the bulkhead might be, but I have a pretty good idea.

Think one of these in 1/2" x 1/2" http://www.marinedepot.com/Insert_Elbow_Fi...IFTFIHB-vi.html and one of these http://www.marinedepot.com/Loc_Line_1_2_in...IFTLLHI-vi.html would do the trick.

Of course, all this assumes that we're working with 1/2" line. If it's something like 3/8", you'd need some sort of barbed 1/2" to 3/8" adapter.

The only reason I knew that the nozzle moved was b/c I knocked the damn thing off when I was first setting up the tank! I thought I had broken it, then put it back on and saw that it could move and rotate. I don't believe there was anything in the paperwork that came with the tank that really explained this. Nor was there a diagram explaining flow patterns and which/why you might want one over another. I played for a while, seeing how food would flow, where it would settle, how much the top of the water moved, did I even want that? In nature, reefs have windward and leeward sides, so it does make sense to blast into a rock face, but not sure if in a small enclosed area whether that assumption translates. And "flow" is not the same as "turbulence" -- right now, I have my flow directed so that the duncans and leather sway so that I can see the coral. The "personal aesthetic" approach to tank management!

That's awesome!!!! Thanks!!! I'll call marine depot today to find out which size I'll need. They are awesome about answering questions like that :) I'll let you know.

No time right now for pictures, but I'm extremely pleased with the tank setup now. All the corals are very happy and inflated, no sand excavating.... Things are good :D
