Jacobnano
Eeesh I thought the pic thing would be fun lol. The tank can fill with water after you upload the pic with whatever the item will be in the tank. You could keep doing constant water changes but that could get stressful and really there isn't much bacteria in the water so you would basically be changing in water with depleted trace elements. Go ahead.... I don't know for sure about the Nov. 1 entry but yes on, November 15th I will be asking for a random pic, and once you post it you can begin! Well we have a set price.... Link to comment
got2envy
Yeah I think a once a month FTS should be enough...you can post as many pix as you want along the way...I am a pix person also videos are awesome!! Link to comment
pisces4u
IMO, no rules on water or water changes lol. The MOD price list should be comprehensive and apply to everyone despite what "deals" and "receipts" they have. The prices are already generous. The contest isn't about "who can find the cheapest coral deals", it's about who can put together the best nano-reef on a level playing field. One pic requirement a month should be plenty. One on or shortly after Nov 15th with a randomly chosen by MOD item to prove the system has not been started yet. One every month thereafter the week of the 15th. By my finger count, if we start on Nov 15th, the contest should be completed on May 15h 2010. Link to comment
Llamaguy
I believe he was referring to skimping on filtration all together and swapping the water from a much larger tank. If you were constant enough, you could basically make your larger tank a "sump" and you being a "pump". But I could never foresee anyone doing that for 6 months, Link to comment
pisces4u
Yeah I can see that. I think to execute that, you'd be doing large regular water changes from the established tank. Most people with nanos do a weekly water change anyways. I don't see how doing 3+ water changes from an established system is going to give you a winning edge over anyone else. If anything, it will probably stress the system more. Even if someone did have the time and larger system to fool around with this, there's no way we could account for it or stop them if they wanted to. Link to comment
harthag12
I'm just wondering if anyone has already started their tank w/ water and such in it and has a spare 10gallon laying around to than throw the object in and snap a picture to make it look like they haven't started and no my tank is unique, I can't be doing that. Phixion
I'm in, I got a nice custom 10g AIO I can use in this. I stopped using the tank a few months back and just need to clean it up a bit. Link to comment

There's always going to be someone who tries to cheat a contest. TBH I'm not worried about someone with that mentality actually winning. Even if someone did, a 2-3 week head start isn't going to win them anything in a 6 month budget contest. Link to comment

Jacobnano
-Total tank volume should be basically 10g. As in no sumps, but a HOB filter is allowed, also converting the tank into an all-in-one is allowed. -Refugiums are allowed, but should be no bigger than an AquaClear 110. -HOB filters are allowed but the largest size is an AquaClear 110. -Budget of 350$ -The cost of the equipment is taken from the budget, so spend wisely. -All live stock can come from anywhere, sponsors, LFS, whatever. If you use something from a current tank, you deduct 75% of its fair market value. If you purchase livestock online, you deduct the actual price paid for the livestock from the budget, but don't count shipping costs. -You can mod all you want as long as you keep your total volume at 10 gallons. -Not deducted from the budget: building supplies, eggcrate, stand/canopy materials, plumbing, sand testing supplies mag float, heater, thermometer, salt, water, supplements, food or CUC (only including snails and hermit crabs + certain other crabs PM me if you want to add something to the CUC that I did NOT mention) -Budget is done on the honor system since we all know what its all worth. In short, you've got 6 months to make a sweet tank on a limited budget. -When something dies it does not count toward the budget. -Begins November 15th Zoa/Palys- No names- $ .30 PP not really colorful at all Common- $1 PP EE, Whammin' watermelons, red skirts, dragon eyes, pink panthers etc. Nice- $5 PP Nukes, PD's, Tubbs blues, Bam Bam's,AOG's, RPE etc. Rare- $20 PP Magicians, PPE, Hornets, Captain America LPS- Fungias- any color $30 Brains- $35 Frogspawn/Hammer/Torch/duncans- $5 per head Trumpets any color- $3 per head Blastos- $10 per head Micromussa -$30 Favias up to 4" -$25 Gonipora up to 5" -$15 <- Poor Survival rate Dendros- $15 per head Sun Coral- $25 up to 5" frag Acans- --Common -$5 per head --Nice -$10 per head --Rare -$20 per head Chalice- --Common -$5 per eye --Nice -$10 per eye --Rare -$20 per eye Leathers/softies- Mushrooms - 5$ per polyp Ricordea 10$ per polyp Yumas- 10$ per polyp GSP- 5$ per 3 inch square Kenya trees- 2$ per frag Xenia- --Pom Pom -$5 per stalk --Blue xenia - $8 per stalk --Anthelia up to 4" - $5 Other leathers up to 4" - 5$ Clove polyps - 5$ up to 3 inch square SPS- Any Morph- branching, encrusting, caps etc. 1/2" -1" -$5 1"-2" -$10 2" - 3" - $20 3" - 5" $30 Clams- Small- $30 Medium - $40 Large- $50 Other inverts- Feather dusters (not hitchhikers)- 8$ Conch - $3 each Nudibranch/sea hares- $5 each Assorted Sea stars- $ 6 each Coral banded shrimp- $5 each Skunk Cleaner shrimp- $20 each Harlequin shrimp- $20 each Sexy shrimp-$10 each Fire shrimp- $30 each Peppermint shrimp-$3 each Pom Pom crab- $10 each Porcelain crab- $10 each Emerald crab- $5 each Coco worm- $15 each Mini Nems- Any morph - $10 each Macros- Hitch hikers are free Any Macro - $2 a sandwich bag Mangroves- $1 each Rock- Base- 2$ per pound Live- 4$ per pound Let me know and I will add more things. 2009-2010 Nano Contest categories l Prizes awarded for: - Best 10g over all Prize 1st prize ($50 gift card to Reef Gardens) 2nd 2chemi pure (6.5oz) floss + 5 units of inTank special floss from INTANK 3rd prize mystery frag from Lawnman -Best Aquascape 1st 2nd 3 mini nems from claygirl132chemi pure (6.5oz) floss + 5 units of inTank special floss from INTANK 3rd prize mystery frag from lajz9 -Best DIY All donated by: scooternerd 1st mini AIO pico (2.7 gallons)+ return pump 2nd small HOB fuge 3rd 7x7x7 tank People in so far Damsels R Cool Clown fish 39 Dizzle21 Duckiesforever TNT276 Jager got2envy claygirl13 Scooternerd Pisces4u JoeD harthag12 gabe3eb ReefDreamz rfd515 Maeda Kali D junyoungmin Llamaguy nanoreefnate Dizzle21 dhjunkie Phixion Osric justkidding86 OK here is some info, I don't know what to classify it as until the competition itself starts. -I am going to choose one object the day before the competition starts and pics must posted of that object in the tank by the end of the next day. -The object could be anything, so don't try to start your tank now, I am pretty random so good luck guessing -Each participant should have a tank thread that I can link to on the first post of the contest thread (not created yet). -There will be monthly required photos of the tanks. Osric
IMO, no rules on water or water changes lol. This seems to be the consensus. I will do a tank with only biological filtration then (rocks), since I don't think anything else will be needed with my main tank to supply water. Jacob, please add me to the list of hopefuls... justkidding86
Add my name to this one. Is it alright if me and a buddy get in on this together, and Eiffel tower this contest. He will supply most of the livestock and equipment and I do the hard work of posting and what not. Link to comment

got2envy
When I made this generic list it was to make everyone happy this is what we would pay if we got stuff from other reefers and not the marked up prices of the LFS. Link to comment
corallineadam
ahh now that makes sense! this price list is a dream com tru for me, who has lfs' that charge 2x or 3x those prices easily. like astrea snails here are 3.99 a pop... Link to comment
gabe3eb
Just stop patronizing the LFS for anything other than pre-mixed water like I do, lol. Right now there are way too many great websites with awesome deals on things to even bother with LFS. I used one when I was setting up my new tank and spent over $400 with them on my lights and my skimmer. I went back a few days later, the lady barely remembered me and she charged me for a $5 damsel. I'm not saying I expect handouts, but I talked to her enough on a prior occasion that it was clear I knew I was paying a good premium to get the stuff localy (she drop-shipped the lights and marked them up about 30-40 more than I woulda paid online, plus it took over a week for them to arrive at the store). Just saying, I like supporting local businesses, but not if they are a ripoff. </rant> Prices then, are pretty much going to be similar to internet standard prices. Maybe a secondary theme to my tank will be "all internet ordered." Link to comment
