I would love a firefish, however my current fish residents are assholes that won't accept any new fish. 34 minutes ago, Reefkid88 said: Man,those are incredible. What is his setup,do you know ? vlangel
Your tank looks terrific. You say that you will never do a sump tank in the basement again but after you have it a while I bet you will feel you can not live without it. I did the same thing. Added a sump to a pre-existing tank in my livingroom. After I added the sump I decided that I would use my old 30XH seahorse tank for a fuge. So now my livingroom display tank drains into the 30g fuge and I have an diy overflow on it that drains into the sump. All gravity flow so with my Jabao DC return pump, it's very efficient. I love it. There was a drain in the floor next to the fuge and a cold water line in the basement ceiling above everything. I mounted the rodi there and its makes a great fish room. Thank you so much for the compliment. You are absolutely right about the basement sump, it's been a game changer in terms of making life easier. I will never try to basement sump an existing tank again. Instead I'm gonna set up all my future systems with a basement sump at the start of the build rather than halfway through. 2 Quote Link to comment

From now on I will also plan the basement sump when I set up a tank. Quote Link to comment
xiaoxiy
Here's some great shots of ugly: damages from AEFW. I tried doing a 6 week limited dip regimen with close inspection (i.e dip visually infected corals weekly and whole tank every other week) but found AEFW larvae post-dip from the pink lemonade this weekend. The previously infected corals have completely healed and colored back up. I'm going to give FWS a try, but if I end up losing all my acros, I won't be that upset.... 1 Quote Link to comment

Hopefully, you can get rid of them. I’d be upset if I lose my acros. Curious why did you say you wouldn’t be all that upset about it? Quote Link to comment
Reefkid88
Regardless of the AEFW things look good !!! Yeah I don't understand why you wouldn't be upset if you lost all the acro's lol. Quote Link to comment

I just finished a 6 week, weekly dip of the infected corals and 3x biweekly dip of ALL of my acropora. Each time I dipped, I inspected them for eggs with a 6x magnifying glass. My next step is weekly dips of all my acros for another 6 weeks and 3-6 months of KZ Flatworm Stop. If I fail afterwards, there have a lot of other cool corals, and I wouldn't mind transitioning to a softie and LPS dominant tank! 1 Quote Link to comment
Reefkid88
I hear you, once they set in the can be devastating. Hopefully you are able to beat them but like you said,a LPS & softy tank would be so amazing with your setup. 2 Quote Link to comment

I also don't have terribly expensive acros either and I've given away enough that I have a lot of back up frags in the local community. Here are some more photos. xiaoxiy
First dip done. Next dip scheduled for Sunday. It takes about 2-3 hours per dip session. 😩 Below is just the display. I also have 28 acros in the frag tank I’m dipping weekly too. I should be done by Xmas. 1 4 1 Quote Link to comment

I thought I'd share the ugly and difficulties/challenges with the tank as well. Below is dip number 2 out of 7. I set the dip station up at 7AM this morning and waited til the lights came on at 8AM. At 8AM, I started removing all of my acros and putting them into the dip container. Added CoralRx and dipped the acros for 10 minutes. Of note, I dipped the hawkins separately in Bayer, as CoralRx is too harsh for echinatas. By 9:30AM, I had re-assembled my aquascape again. Thank god for Stax rock and how modular it is... 1 3 Quote Link to comment
xiaoxiy
Hey nano-reefers. I'm not sure if people still follow this thread, but here's an update: Reefing really has it's ups and downs. Three weeks into the dip regimen, it looked like I was on the right track. The damaged acros (specificially the pink lemonade) started healing back over the nasty-looking tissue, and I saw no signs of AEFW. Then disaster struck on Thanksgiving. The morning of Thanksgiving, I noticed that these two millepora seemed a bit off. I wasn't sure what was going on... They looked a bit bleached, and PE seemed stunted too. They continued to deteriorate over the next several hours. Within a couple more hours, other acros in my tank started looking bleached too. At this point, I knew that I had a potential crash on my hands. I changed out the carbon, started doing massive water changes, and grabbed some Polyfilter too in case the crash was due to metal contaminants. Turns out, one of my old butt (5-6 years old) reactor pumps had corroded and started leaking electricity into my tank.Within 48 hours of the crash, these two milles were toast. Fortunately, I was able to get things turned around pretty quickly. After I removed the pump, things started looking immediately better. Altogether, I only lost two the two milleporas (both the clones in the display and frag tank). Things have been coloring back up again and healing appropriately. Here's an FTS from this weekend, 3 full weeks after the initial crash. I'm not sure which direction to go from here. I'm trying to decide on whether I should restart the 6 week dipping regimen again, and when I should restart it. It's been 3 weeks since the last dip, and I haven't seen any signs of AEFW. I continued to dose KZ FWS daily at 2x the recommended dosage during the crash, and am continuing to do so currently. At this point, I'm leaning towards halting the dip and only restarting it if I see signs of AEFW again. Otherwise, I think I'm just gonna do 5 more months of KZ FWS at 2x dosage, for a total of 6 full months. While the past 3 months has been hectic and stressful, I have learned so much more over this period than I had when the tank was on cruise control. One of the most important things I have learned is to build an emergency reef saving kit. Here's what I have in mine now. Emergency Reef Saving Kit: - 100G of salt mix for massive water changes - Seachem Acid Buffer (to decrease the alkalinity of my freshly mixed water, as I/O mixes up at 10+ and I run my tank around 7) - Carbon, lots of it - Polyfilter 1 Quote Link to comment
xiaoxiy
There's also good news. I just didn't have enough room to write it up all into 1 post. My frag tank is filling up with a ton of corals. A good friend of mine cut up his two goniporas, and gave me a quarter of each. They're huge and I had to cut them down so that they would have room to grow in the display. Also took the opportunity to make several microfrags of them to grow out on a tile. This way, I won't have to reach into the display in the future to make frags. He also gave me a cute baby orange plate. Another friend also gave me a ton of zoanthids. Here they are in the tank.. slowly opening up. Made some Ricordea and Bounce Frags over the past couple weeks too. Here's the FTS: 1 2 Quote Link to comment

xiaoxiy
Acans apparently heal up pretty quickly if you spot feed them regularly. I've been feeding mine mysis three times a week (MWF). Dec. 10th December 28th 1 1 Quote Link to comment
Reefkid88
Heck yeah they do,I spot fed mine 3 times a week with ReefRoids,LPS Max,SPS max,Rotifers and broadcast fed the tank with Red Sea Amino's A and B 2 times a week and literally had new heads every few days. The Display and frag system look absolutely insane bud,you are doing great !!! 1 Quote Link to comment

Reefkid88
Frag system's are super ideal for them. Man get some Acan's and cook them babies in the frag tank !!! BSA has some super nice "asian" acan's for super cheap. Quote Link to comment
