East1
The easiest way to tell the difference between a Stylophora and a Seriatopora is to make the polyps retract, stylophora has like a little 'crown' shape and the polyp will retract almost fully where as a seriatopora has a less defined corallite and when it retracts it just looks like the polyps deflate but they don't seem to retract as much Link to comment
teenyreef
Man, I really need to start working with my camera to get the white balance figured out. Tank looks great, Teeny! Sorry about the gobies though Thanks, Jaime! I usually mess with the white balance in post processing. Interesting thing, though, since I got the macro lens the white balance is a LOT closer to reality. The easiest way to tell the difference between a Stylophora and a Seriatopora is to make the polyps retract, stylophora has like a little 'crown' shape and the polyp will retract almost fully where as a seriatopora has a less defined corallite and when it retracts it just looks like the polyps deflate but they don't seem to retract as much That's great information! I'll have to take a closer look when the polyps are retracted. I've never taken a picture when it's retracted and ugly Link to comment
East1
You can just tap at it with something solid and it should pull it's polyps fine, it won't harm the coral. Link to comment
teenyreef
Well, my sexy shrimp decided that there might be something tasty there, so I took a quick picture after gently prodding him to move along. If he decides he has a taste for SPS he may be in for some major lifestyle changes. Let me know what you think: https://flic.kr/p/pVvcrR'>https://flic.kr/p/pVvcrR'>Retracted Polyps by https://www.flickr.com/people/15628054@N06/'>TeenyReef, on Flickr Link to comment

teenyreef
That does look more like a Seriatopora Caliendrum from the pictures, interesting cus I've not seen them neon green before (when you first got it) Thanks - I think the neon green color may have had more to do with white balance than anything else. Although I do remember it being more "limey" than it is now. I've been gradually ramping up the intensity of my Nanobox, so it will be interesting to see if it gets limey again over the next month or too. Link to comment
teenyreef
I went by the Petco near work on the way home today just to see if they carried frozen cyclops. I usually don't go there because their saltwater fish and corals looked terrible the one time I stopped by. They didn't have any frozen cyclops, but they must have gotten a new fish manager. The tanks were in nice shape with no evidence of pests, and the fish and corals looked reasonably healthy. Much to my surprise, they carried green banded gobies. The fish manager said she orders them because she thinks they're really cool, even though they're so tiny. I got the last one, which she said has been in the tank and eating for several weeks. So hopefully this guy will be healthy and will break my GBG curse He's hanging out in the quarantine tank now underneath the PVC. buddythelion
Gorgeous pico! Following along for some pico inspiration. I'm really sorry about those gbg, but what an outstanding vendor! I emailed him to let me know when they're in stock too. Mentioned you. Hopefully this new guy makes it. I love gbg. I'm not sure if 5 would do well in a 4 gallon though as they pair off eventually? jeremycee
My dendro gets puffy like that too the night after i feed it. Ive been feeding with reefroids though My little dendro got really greedy tonight and tried to eat a big mysis shrimp...sideways. I managed to get a picture of it before he disgorged it a few minutes later. The tail is still sticking out the top, and you can pretty much see the whole shrimp inside him, with the head on the right hand side Link to comment
buddythelion
Well, I have bad news and good news on the Green Banded Goby. The bad news is he hasn't made an appearance since the first 24 hours I had him, and even when I drained almost all the water tonight there was no sign of him Everything else in the tank is doing great including the new sexy shrimp and the new pom pom crab, so I think it was just bad luck and the stress of shipping that must have done him in. The good news is... The guy on Ebay that sells 5-packs of GBGs for $14.99 had more in stock http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-GREEN-BANDED-GOBIES-live-saltwater-fish-pack-/281557634430?pt=Live_Fish&hash=item418e248d7e So I plan to keep two in this tank and three in the 10g tank, assuming they all survive I know both Gena and Jedimasterben had good luck with this particular seller so I've got my fingers crossed for better luck with these guys. I mean, at least one of out of five should survive so I can have my GBG in this tank again. I refuse to accept defeat!!! Guess who just bought 10 GBG... Better hurry... Link to comment

Thanks! I really want to get some high end zoas, but I think they're going to go mostly in the 10g tank where there's more room. I'm thinking you might know a place where I can get some, right? :) My plan for the GBG's was to put two in this tank, and three in the 10g. Gena's for 5 in hers but she has a much bigger tank than either of mine. I agree the seller was absolutely outstanding. And by getting a new order from you, he just showed why it's worth doing the right thing instead of trying to make a quick buck naked worm is on its last legs. it is very sad. we are in hospice mode. i tried. but he is moving less and less--though he did stir when i fed this morn. but otherwise, curled up motionless. Awww, I'm so sorry. Sometimes this hobby can be really sad and frustrating My dendro gets puffy like that too the night after i feed it. Ive been feeding with reefroids though Does he really eat reefroids? I would think it would be much too fine for him? Guess who just bought 10 GBG... Better hurry... Aaaaaaaaah!!!! I almost pulled the trigger but now that I have one, I just don't think it's a good idea to put so many more in either of my tanks. I could maybe see doing 2 in this one and 3 in the other, but that one more goby puts it over the edge But it's so tempting to have a whole school of them. They are beautiful fish and unlike most gobies, they're always active. Look at him! What a cutie. Thanks! Twenty four hours later, he's doing fine. I took a single Formula One flake, crunched it up in to little pieces, and he's been chowing down. Yay! I don't have to rely on frozen or exotic live foods to feed him Link to comment
