gena
I got the new macro lens today!!! It's a Tamron 90mm, $250 used on Ebay. The seller did a nice job of taking care of it. He had all the original materials and it basically appears to be brand new. It's going to take a lot of practice to learn how to use it properly, but here are a few shots I took tonight: This is the "Green Birdsnest" I got as a tiny frag at an LFS. I'm pretty sure it's actually a Stylophora. I don't go to that LFS much any more Stylophora by TeenyReef, on Flickr Tubipora (Pipe Organ Coral). I really like this guy - he provides a nice contrast to the other corals in both color and texture. Pipe Organ Coral by TeenyReef, on Flickr Green favia. Poor guy got turned upside down while I was on vacation and about half of him receded. He's making a nice comeback now Green Favia by TeenyReef, on Flickr Candy Apple and Radioactive Dragon Eye zoas. Still waiting for my other zoas to cover their rocks like these guys have. Zoas by TeenyReef, on Flickr Wow...nice job with the photos! That does look like a green birdsnest to me. Love the pipe organ coral. I've always loved the looks of those! Can't wait to see more great photos . TGIF . Link to comment
vlangel
O my word! I really liked your other tank but I love this one! I have missed some awesome pico tanks because I was following tanks in my tanks' sizes. Your 8g is beautiful. My bad, now I see it's 4g. That is amazing, it looks way bigger! Link to comment
teenyreef
Wow...nice job with the photos! That does look like a green birdsnest to me. Love the pipe organ coral. I've always loved the looks of those! Can't wait to see more great photos . TGIF . Thanks, Gena! I've always thought of Birdsnest as the more skinny, twiggy, variety, but after doing some image searches I guess it does look more like the ORA Green Birdsnest. But I've also found lots of pictures of green stylophora that seems to look like this guy too, so I get easily confused Whatever it's called, though, I like the way it looks The pipe organ coral didn't do well in shipping and only had about half a dozen polyps when I got it. It doesn't grow very fast so I'm happy that it has so many polyps now. TGIF to you too! Five green Gobies are on the UPS truck for delivery right now!!! O my word! I really liked your other tank but I love this one! I have missed some awesome pico tanks because I was following tanks in my tanks' sizes. Your 8g is beautiful. My bad, now I see it's 4g. That is amazing, it looks way bigger! Thanks! I love my pico tank. It sits on my desk so I spend hours every day looking at it and getting distracted with little maintenance tasks. I think the pico tanks are like jewelry boxes, full of little pieces of jewelry. It's not about getting the corals to grow big, its about getting all the colors and shapes and textures to work together. I wish I'd understood that when I started it - I would have done so many things differently. But I guess that's part of the fun Very nice- macro lens are super fun to use- that stylo is a great piece Thanks - I've already order a remote trigger for the camera because I quickly learned the only way to get the thing to stay focused is with a timer or remote And apparently maybe my stylo really is a birdsnest gorgeous, teeny! TGIF! Thanks, Cindy! Good luck on finishing your book! Link to comment
TheNordCelt
You have done an amazing job with this tank, I can't believe its only 4g. Link to comment
teenyreef
So my Green Banded Goby curse continued today. The Ebay seller shipped promptly, packed them properly, and even included an extra fish. Unfortunately, all six were DOA They weren't even close to being alive, I could smell them as soon as I opened the outer bag. The heat packs were still warm, so I'm not sure what happened. Maybe they got overheated somewhere along the line. I've contacted the seller and followed his DOA process. We'll see how this turns out. This won't be such a great deal after all if I have to pay for another shipment. All I'm left with now is a pic of the quarantine tank I set up earlier https://flic.kr/p/pT3VoJ'>https://flic.kr/p/pT3VoJ'>Quarantine Tank by https://www.flickr.com/people/15628054@N06/'>TeenyReef, on Flickr Link to comment

teenyreef
You have done an amazing job with this tank, I can't believe its only 4g. Thank you! I'm glad you've been able to start your new tank - definitely following along! Oh no! I'm so sorry about your gobies... Thanks, Kimberbee! Sorry to hear about the gobies. Occasional but unavoidable loss of life is an aspect of this hobby I'll never get used to. Yeah, it's never fun. I just picture those guys swimming around, happy as can be a few days ago. And now, instead of being whisked off to reef tank heaven where they get hand fed every day, they went to fish heaven ahead of schedule I just heard back from the seller, though. He's out of stock now but he refunded not only the purchase price but also the shipping charges. So he gets an A+ rating from me and I will try another order as soon as he gets some more in stock. cindyp
oh teeny. i'm SO sorry. i admit i'm very leery of ordering fish online. i'm not ready for another fish anyway, with my naked worm, as i had said. but i'll just wait patiently to see what LCS will have when i'm feeling ready. that's such a bummer though. da1001
I can only buy the healthiest looking LFS fish I can, because I don't trust shipping and it hurts so much when you lose one. Link to comment

markalot
Great little tank, I don't think I've commented before but have been following.Very sorry about the gobies, it was probably heat since we've had a few days in the 50's. I think you're right about the stylophora and I think you'll like it better than a green bird since the bird grows so darn fast. teenyreef
Thanks for all your comments, everybody! I will definitely try the gobies again. I think the problem was that there were two heat packs in the box, they were close to the bag, and it was fairly warm during the time there were in shipment. I think they just got cooked I with I could buy them at an LFS but nobody carries them. I may have to ask if they can order them. Hmmm...stylophora vs birdsnest? I really can't figure it out. When my frag first got started it was really rounded and stubby, like this: Birdsnest? Stylophora? by TeenyReef, on Flickr Now after six months, it's grown quite a bit, with a lot more branching and looks like this: Birdsnest? Stylophora? by TeenyReef, on Flickr Here's the stock photo of the ORA Green Birdsnest. The branches look a little thinner but its hard to tell in a close up: Here's the ORA green stylophora. From their description: "Green Stylophora or cats paw coral has thick, compact short branches with brilliant green to teal blue polyps. Somewhat similar in appearance to the Green Birdsnest, but much thicker structure with very rounded branch tips and overall plump form." Mine doesn't really seem to have the pronounced rounded shapes from this picture: So I guess until it grows out some more it will be hard to tell, but it seems to be getting less and less "plump". I also know that the thickness of the branches is affected by the flow, and although there's adequate flow in this tank, it's not super high. So for now, since it seems to be starting to branch out more, and since it was labeled as birdsnest at the LFS where I got it, I'm going to go with birdsnest. But I could probably be talked out of it by someone with more experience Link to comment
da1001
That's one thing I like about my LFS, teeny. They may not have a huge stock, but they are ALWAYS willing to order me exactly what I need. Hopefully yours would be able to do the same thing for you. Link to comment
teenyreef
My little dendro got really greedy tonight and tried to eat a big mysis shrimp...sideways. I managed to get a picture of it before he disgorged it a few minutes later. The tail is still sticking out the top, and you can pretty much see the whole shrimp inside him, with the head on the right hand side https://flic.kr/p/pUVLLK'>https://flic.kr/p/pUVLLK'>Dendro eats a shrimp by https://www.flickr.com/people/15628054@N06/'>TeenyReef, on Flickr Link to comment

teenyreef
I took a new FTS with the macro lens. It's amazing how much more detailed and focused the picture is even though it's taken from six feet away instead of eighteen inches. White balance is also much better in this one. 4g CADLights FTS-01-19-2015 by TeenyReef, on Flickr Link to comment
