Hey Mirya, how does the bioload feel on this tank? Maxed out, or comfy? I'm trying to decide whether I can put two more fish in mine or only one. I've got an ocellaris and a lubbock's fairy wrasse right now.

Hey, you'll have to tell me what's happening in NC. Maybe you can visit down the line, depending where you'll be, what you're doing.

It is so humid here.... Though I realize that is because its rained for about a week and hurricane Joachin is threatening.

I think I'm maxed out for the amount of maintenance (water change every 2 weeks) and filtration (filter floss, chemipure blue, pico skim which is an airstone skimmer) I put into the tank. Looking forward to my upgrade, which will increase my total volume by 14ish gallons and I'll get a more powerful skimmer.

Yeah, it's humid in that area in the summer but right now it's certainly because of the hurricane. We're not supposed to have a break here in WNC until Tues. Flooding watches from 8am tomorrow til Mon 8am for us.

The tank has arrived!

Well, tank is in Columbus... I'm in Raleigh. My husband sent me this picture:

He said the tank looks intact. He sealed back up the shipping crate after he took this picture.

The tank was accidentally made out of 1/2" glass. The tank and crate weighted 185 lb!

Yeah it was supposed to be 1/4"!

Magnets on pumps will still hold them there, right? I would assume since they're so strong.

Annette -- I'm so excited to potentially be able to show you this tank in person down the road!

I'm back in Columbus for the next two-ish weeks. It's great to see the tanks! Things are going fairly well. The St. Thomas mushrooms look better than when I left (they were looking pale). Ricordeas and zoas are happy. RFAs are doing their thing.

There are two sorta negatives though. My jawfish just isn't acting like himself. His colors seem dull and he is hanging out deeper than normal in his burrow. He will eat if I target right over his burrow, but he doesn't dart out like he used to. He just seems to stare off into space and isn't paying attention to things around him like he used to. Since he barely sticks out of the burrow I can't get a really good look at his body to see if he is losing weight or has any parasites on him. He is still studiously maintaining his burrow though. I'm at a loss as to what to do other than staying on top of water quality and keeping him fed. Open to suggestions!

The other sorta negative is my biggest rose coral seems to have a little tissue recession. I seem to remember reading somewhere (Guits' thread maybe?) that mussids can get bacterial infections. I think I need to dig that info up and try to figure out what I can try dipping it in.

I wonder if a probiotic would work with the rose coral. I use probiotic almost daily in the seahorse tank.

It probably wouldn't hurt to add to the tank in general. Maybe it can even help my melancholy jawfish. Which probiotic do you use? I seem to remember Natalia liking the Sanolife Mic-f or something.

I did find the reference from Nanospaiens I was thinking of in Guits' thread. I'm reposting it here for my benefit.

The causal agent could be viral and the bacteria opportunists...don't know. However, as in many cases the best we can do is treat the bacterial infection and hope the coral recovers. if you research you'll find this condition fairly common to Mussids and it's even addressed in The Reef Aquarium Vol 3 (Sprung/Delbeek (pg 654) where the prescribed treatment is a 3 minute dip in seawater containing 5ml/gal Melafix. Safest to dip each coral in a separate container.

Yes, that is the one. Sanolife mic-F. I read on a seahorse forum that seahorse source can no longer get it though. I hope you can find it.

I'm looking forward to meeting up one day! What about a fish trap? Then again it may cause more stress for him. I've never seen a rose but I know I'll love your tanks. Weather just went from hot to cold in 2 wks time, weird.

I think I figured out what is wrong with my jawfish. He's blind! He is only eating the food that drops right on top of his head. I waved the feeding pipette directly in front of him and nothing -- didn't startle at all. I did some Googling an it appears that blindness in jawfish is a thing that is periodically reported. It is assumed to be related to nutrition. It's weird -- I feed a variety of frozen foods. But, it is a home prepared frozen that my reef club makes, not something like LRS. Some people have reported that with Selcon supplementation their jawfish have regained their sight in a few months. So, I'm going to give that a shot.

Ah, poor little guy. Good thing he has a very caring owner who is attuned to what is going on with him. He might have starved to death otherwise.

My fellow American readers: GO VOTE TODAY!

I went in to the poll early today and got it out of the way. It was pretty quick and painless. Ohio has a ballot amendment regarding marijuana legalization. But tied to it, the amendment gives a monopoly on marijuana growing to the people who paid to bring the amendment to vote. There is a competing ballot amendment banning state sanctioned monopolies, which doesn't retroactively affect other state-sanctioned monopolies like casinos. It'll be interesting to see how that all shakes out at the end of the day.

Tank updates:

Stevie is eating his food soaked in Selcon quite well. I don't think he has any vision back yet, but he does seem perkier. It could just be that he is acclimating to being blind though.

I picked up a new RFA over the weekend from a LFS. It is a black and white zebra striped one, but with a purple mouth. I'll get some photos up tonight.
