Mr MJ, you're the bestestest boss ever!

I try. B)

In all seriousness though, I'm looking forward to being my own boss. I was a bit nervous about the idea initially, since I've only been licensed since May. However, I handled criminal cases while in law school, and pretty much everything I've done where I am now was done without much in the way of formal guidance from my boss. Either I have to research a procedure and tell him how its done, or he tosses me a book, tells me to read a chapter, and then go do it. Better pay, better hours, better work, and less stress elsewhere? Sign me up!

It really sounds like the beginning of a beautiful new chapter in life. You've earned it, enjoy :flower:

Thanks! Now I just have to wait until it starts, which isn't until December. And even then, I won't be out of here until probably the spring. But as they say, good things come to those who wait. Plus, dating a girl who understands the whole "professional" thing helps too.

Wait! You are dating a professional? I thought she was a vet smack.gif

She just plays one on tv. :P I hadn't thought about it much before, but after spending a little bit of time at the clinic, I realized that the owners who bring in the "patients" are often as distressed as, or more than, the clients that I represent. Plus, vets have to deal with real life and death issues. In some ways, I think her job will be harder than mine.

Well, I do know that DH will certainly be in charge of the coffee.

Oh, and this is old news, but it still makes me laugh:

Congressman rambles and thinks Guam may tip over

"plus you will probably develop a coke habbit.." LMAO

My favorite:

"I love the Constitution."

"If you say it is a living, breathing document, I may kill myself."

"But it is."

"Oh no, you are going to make me orphan my daughter."

That was a pretty hilarious video.

Indeed! Although, I practice constitutional law, and I didn't graduate from Harvard in the 1970's. ;)

That video is hysterical. I work with a bunch of county/municipal specialists lawyers and I'm debating whether I should show this to them.

You should! Even though it's geared toward those contemplating law school, having been through law school, I still found it very funny. However, the part about no one practicing constitutional law is very inaccurate. The lawyers you'd be showing it to would very likely point that out. ;)

Then they'd charge me .1 to "analyze and review video".

 I've heard tales of lawyers who try to bill for every minute they are awake. Nothing surprises me in the billing area anymore.

I showed the video to an attorney here, first thing he said 'lots of attorneys practicing constitutional law'.

I replied "only you guys (the defense panel), the aclu, and the group hanging out in front of the county lock up". I think I found it funnier than he did.

It is pretty clever. He's right though. I know of two or three groups (including the one that I work for) that spends a considerable amount of time practicing constitutional law.

I'm sure you're right, but for what we pay a year- he can stand there and take his ribbing like a man. If it's like it is here, there are a few very good plaintiff's firms who practice constitutional law we respect and work with from the start if they're taking the case. We know they won't even touch a case unless they've done the prework. Then there are 10x that number of attorney's who are dipping their toe in that arena or are trying to build up a political or judicial resume. Those guys usually fall apart at the MSJ and start sticking to state claims thereafter.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've seen a lot of the politiking at play around me. One thing many people don't realize is that "constitutional law" isn't limited to the federal constitution. The work that we do is almost exclusively state constitutional law. However, even the non-profit world tends to get warped sometimes. For some people, it's a crusade, rather than a way to make a real difference. I know some con law types who view almost every lawyer they go up against as a communist pinko who will rip out your heart and eat it at the first opportunity. To me, that's no way to get things accomplished, and no way to live/work. I was going to slowly transition myself out of that kind of environment, and over into private practice, over a period of many months, but I'm starting to think the sooner the better!

It's good that you've identified what you want to do early. I've met a lot of lawyers who sort of fell into whatever they're practicing over the years. I still think of Constitutional Law as federal law just because it sorts out more easily in my head- also on my claim reserves.

And they are all communist pinkos until you prove otherwise :).

Knowing what I wanted to do certainly helped! In some ways, I think my current displeasure with my work is more the nature of this beast, rather than the law itself. I still enjoy constitutional law, but I want to do it more in the criminal realm, rather than the obscure stuff I work on now. I also want to be my own boss. B)

Oh, and don't feel bad about that.... there are even members of the state AG's office who sometimes act like they are unaware that the state constitution protects rights of any kind.

 I've met some decent ones in my time already. I think it's usually government lawyers (or private lawyers who represent the government) who tend to be communist pinkos until proven innocent.

Everyone's a communist pinko until proven otherwise, imo.

I should have guessed that you would jump in with something like that. :P DH, it's just your experience living in NYC that makes you think that way. You like in commie pinko central. The only place more pink is California.
