I found this Nanocustoms video

which gives me a good idea of what it will look like when I open it up.

@superspec: here, try this knitting instruction and LMK how easy it was, k?

1st row: *P1,K9, P1, repeat from * to end

2nd row: same as for 1

3rd row: *P1, hold three stitches forward, K3, knit 3 from cable, K3, P1, repeat from, * to end

4th 5th 6th: same as row 1

7th row: *P1, K3, hold 3 stitches to back, K3, k3 from cable, P1, repeat from, * to end

8th row: same as row 1

Rows 1-8 form pattern. Repeat for desired length. (until hat covers ears and reaches the crown of your head.)

Forgive me if this has already been answered, but I didn't want to read through 40 pages. Is it ok to remove the false floor in chamber 2 after the tank has been setup? I would assume it's ok since it's in the water anyway but I wasn't sure if chunks of silicon would break free.

BTW you can add my 29 biocube to the list. link: http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=266734

In case you haven't figured it out yet; yes, it's safe.

Thanks. I went ahead and did it a few days ago and it wasn't even siliconed in. It must have already been messed with by the previous owner.

Should I remove the big blue sponge in the pump chamber? If so, just remove it or put something in its place?

I would leave it and just make sure you clean it out when you do water changes. Maybe replace it once a month.

Not a bad idea but I just ditched mine. No problems, yet :).

Question: how do you add more moon lights to the BC14? Which slots on the mother board (is that what its called?) Do the extra lights clip into?

I think I found one empty slot where I can put an extra moonlight. But would appreciate help from anybody who knows more?

thanks

Chamber 2 -Stock filter carbon tray - removed floss and carbon Chato in refugium Led lighting for chato 2 cups of lr rubble - bic lighter sized pieces Lower stock tray holds up rubble Chemipure elite on floor - removed sponge between chamber 2-3

Chamber 3 -Stock pump Will be replacing with m 1200 pump & eliminating 90* elbow

Keep tank temp at 79 6hr light cycle on stock hqi Korilla 425 in tank just below top intake 20lbs live sand 20lbs live rock

Dwarf fire angel Blenny Sand sifting star Serpent star 3 other small fish can't recall the species will update Reefcleaners 30 gal kit of various snails herm crabs Some strange crab hides in my rock.

Some sps lps

I had a red slime issue hope that the new pump will help. I used red slime removed a few days ago seems to work well. Feeding was everyother day but changed to every three days 1/4 cube of frozen

Should I add more rock?

What are some good leds for moonlight on hqi?

Should my rubble be smaller?

Should I cut out the full overflow between cham1&2?

Will my crappy skimmed still work if I hang it from the lower cut overflow?

Will having no mechanical filtration (floss) besides chato be an issue? Does anyone use a flossless setup?

Biocube Filtration (water conditioning/movement/filtration):

Stock Filtration:

biocube_filter.jpg

  • All sizes of the stock biocube use the same methods for filtration. First water is drawn through a filter cartridge (carbon covered with filter floss). This provides both mechanical and chemical filtration for your tank.

Water then travels over the top of the dividing wall and into the middle chamber. This is where the bioballs provide the biological filtration.

Next water is pulled down to the bottom of the middle chamber and drawn through a sponge separating chambers 2 and 3. This provides an added layer of mechanical filtration while also protecting your return pump from large particles that can cause damage to the rotor blades.

Finally to complete the cycle water is returned to the display using the stock return pump. The return pump is an import part of the filtration cycle, that will be discussed later on.

    stock pumps
    BC-8 106 gph
    BC-14 137 gph
    BC-29 243 gph

*The filtration process in the biocube also helps to oxygenate the water which is a very import part in keeping a healthy tank.

As you can see the people at oceanic have done a good job designing a tank that incorporates all 3 types of filtration: Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological. So why would you want to make any changes?

Well, there are a couple reasons why people decide to make changes, for me it was a combination of increased performance and my insatiable appetite for DIY projects. I am going to break this article into 4 parts tackling all 3 of the filtration methods as well as the importance of proper water movement. Each section will discuss the benefits and disadvantages of the stock method verses the various other upgrades that are available.

Chapter 1: Mechanical Filtration

  • Filter Cartridge: When I make reference to mechanical filtration in regards to the filter cartridge I am only referring to the filter floss (not the carbon).

    Problem:
The filter cartridge does a fine job at removing particles from the water column, however it has 2 serious flaws. As the floss becomes dirty the organic particles begin to break down and lower your water quality. The solution, replacing the cartridge every few days, is simple but brings about the second problem. At $3 a pop the money you spend on cartridges is going to really add up over the lifetime of your biocube. That money would be better spent on tank upgrades---or beer.
    Solution:
The solution to this one is simple, and cheap (the best kind). All you need is a bag of filter floss (100% pure polyester fiber, basically its just pillow stuffing).

This is what I use, it costs next to nothing and lasts a really long time.
    100_0227.jpg
The goal is to place the floss in a place where all the water is going to be forced through.
The grate over chamber 2 works perfect!
    100_0230.jpg
All you need is a small amount of floss.
    100_0232.jpg
And thats it you did it! In 2-3 days it will get dirty and you can just throw it in the garbage and add a new handful.

Sponges:

coming soon...

What happened to the Sponges update? I would love to know how the rest of your filtration setup is.

First,

Awesome thread, I've followed it for years. I have since jumped to the BC29. My question is that since Nanotuners.com is KIA, is there another company that sells the inhood LED retrofit kit. I can't seem to find anything. Thanks for the help :D

I have the rapidled retrofit kit and am happy with it. Check out rapidled.com.

Hello,

Is there any issue with having the media basket and Aquatic Life skimmer in chamber 2 instead of the media basket and fuge?

If I had the fuge what would go in this area? I just got my tank today and will be setting it up tomorrow and ordering the other supplies on Friday.

Thank you!!!

Only water level will be an issue. Skimmers in general, and the aquatic life in particular, like to have a fairly constant water level. Get an ATO and you'll be fine with it in chamber 2.

Are you asking what would go in the fuge?
