GHill762
I like that tank! thanks Kat anyone have any tips on getting color back on that birds of paradise in front/center? it had great coloration when I got it but it's faded out over time, I think (like everything else) it was from a lack of nutrients, it seems to be getting some color back but not as quickly as everything else.. ORA calls for: Placement: Bottom – Middle Lighting: Medium – High Flow: Moderate – Strong I've been feeding crazy heavy lately, but I'm still not getting much increase in algal growth. I just keep feeding heavy though, I feed multiple times a day using rods original, pellets, flake, nori, etc.. I get a little brown cyano sometimes, but my chaeto doesn't really grow, there is a little patch of turf algae in the fuge that grows in spurts. it seems like the heavier I feed the better/richer color I get from the corals and the healthier everything looks. metrokat
Coral foods are the microfine powdered variety, they also come in liquid. Such as reed roids, nutricell, reef chilli, reef blizzard, rotifers, golden pearls 0.5 micron powder etc. They are sized so that SPS can injest them. I throw in phyto everyday too. I use brightwell phytochrome which has multiple species mixed in but any phyto is good, every single critter in the tank benefits from it. Live phyto is even better. 1 Quote Link to comment
GHill762
yeah, I was dosing chromaplex for a while, but I ran out. I think it was helping but I'm not sure if it was because of the phyto or simply because I was adding nutrients. I've not seen any less progress after running out a few weeks ago.. TheElysia
It's an awesome display. I love how the red Montipora looks like it's starting to encrust onto the substrate, also the giant frogspawn lump. Quote Link to comment

I'm going to be moving my tank very soon, I'm sure a little re-scaping will be in order. I don't want to chop either of them up so I may need to ditch some stuff to make room. Quote Link to comment
calrissian
I've had my eye on that LED light for my 40 breeder build. Is supplementing with the T5s necessary? I'm only planning softies and LPS. I don't wanna spend that much cabbage on a light just to have to add more light to it. Anything you don't like about it? Looks like it has decent coverage. Looks like it has decent coverage. absolutely does not need supplementation, I just wanted to. it's got perfect coverage, I originally had the 90* optics and had it mounted probably 12-14" off the top of the tank and it had perfect coverage, then I decided to remove the optics for more light spread and it's got perfect coverage but much closer to the tank and with a considerable amount of light spill. then I added the t5's which was just a personal preference and the t5's block the front and back light spill as an added benefit. it's a fine light and I'm sure you'll be happy with it Quote Link to comment
calrissian
^ Thanks! That makes me feel better. I think that's gonna be the light I go with. I was afraid I might need the 32", but for over $100 more, I probably would have just gone with T5s. I've never used LEDs so I'm a lil hesitant to take the plunge. Thanks for the reply! 1 Quote Link to comment

GHill762
bump revive this thread Guess I should check my thread from time to time huh? lol.. not much to update but I may post some pics soon. I've been battling some nasty brown stuff (unidentified), I think I'm winning the battle but still looks gross. maybe I'll update when I get a couple new fish, lost one right before tank move and one right after.. GHill762
I'll post an update soon.. I feel like I'm trying to play catch-up for all of the neglect since the move and then there's the nasty algae I've been dealing with.. ugh. I've been away from the forum for a while and don't get on much anymore, I'm sure there are things on the forum and just in reefkeeping in general that I've missed.. part of it is my new situation at work, don't get as much forum time as I used to 1 Quote Link to comment

GHill762
okay, snapped a few pics over the weekend, just now got the chance to get them posted.. nothing fancy, just phone pics. The tank is really cluttered, I need to go through and get rid of a bunch of stuff. The frogspawn is getting absolutely massive. Also, I have trouble getting acro's to color up but then again I don't do much besides change water and feed the fish.. rarely even dose anything. 20160612_115436 2016-06-12_12-19-30 2016-06-12_12-20-17 2016-06-12_12-20-29 2016-06-12_12-20-45 2016-06-12_12-20-54 2016-06-12_12-21-42 2016-06-12_12-21-51 2016-06-12_12-21-59 2016-06-12_12-22-09 2016-06-12_12-22-18 2016-06-12_12-22-25 2016-06-12_12-22-33 2016-06-12_12-22-49 2016-06-12_12-20-07 20160612_113312-1 5 Quote Link to comment

Thanks! the acro's are lacking color but pretty much everything else is doing well.. finally got that nasty brown gunk under control a little while back, although I still get a little in the sand from time to time. The acros kind of look like the few I have in my LED lit 40. I think the T5's will help, maybe turn down the white LED channel and use the T5's for white? I have an acro that is always bright green and purple in my big tank but grey/brown/hints of green in my 40. I've been playing with the LED colors to see if I can fix it though it may be nutrient related. I Always have slime in my 40 and nutrients always read 0. Quote Link to comment

I had a nutrient issue for a while, couldn't even get macros to stay alive. the white LEDs don't ramp up very high, I mostly use the T5's for white with a short period of higher intensity mid day. GHill762
Don't think I've posted about this, check out this grooms cake my wife surprised me with at our wedding! this is where the little clown bride and groom came from that's on top of my led light. 2015-08-26_01-02-59 7 Quote Link to comment

GHill762
turned off my MP10's and skimmer yesterday morning for some maintenance and to take some pics, apparently never turned them back on.. oops.. any idea how long they'd have to be off to cause any real harm to SPS? still had some flow from return pump.
