Evilc66's Oceanic 30g Cube

EDIT: As of 3/4/2013, this tank is in reboot mode. Reboot posts start here

As I mentioned in my 40B thread, I ended up getting a really good deal on a used Oceanic 30g cube and stand. I have really been enjoying my Biocube14 for the last two years, as it was the tank that got me started in saltwater, but it is getting a little too crowded. That was painfully evident before I got my new system with frag tank running with frag racks littered everywhere and frags crammed in all kinds of places.

Even now with all the frags moved out, I have run out of room to add anything new, and it's on autopilot. Not that there is anything wrong with that, as it's stable and happy, but I need more ;)

Enter the successor.

Fortunately, with already having the light, most of the heavy cost of getting the system set up is already gone. The two Koralia Nanos will be used for flow for now in addition to the sump return pump. I'm contemplating an MP10 for this guy, but it will be a little later on down the road.

Tank is cleaned up already, and I'm going to order a Glass-Holes Super Nano overflow tonight. Not looking to have a ton of flow through the sump, so a nice compact overflow with a 300gph rating will fit the bill. Back glass will be painted black of course.

Stand is in decent shape with your average wear and tear for a tank that is two years old. Only thing I'm looking to do right now is change out the hinge hardware on the door to something a little less rusty.

Sump is going to have to be a custom job. There aren't any pre fab'd tanks available that will fir, or be big enough. Sump dimensions will be about 16"x16"x12". I'm going to raise the sump up about 11" so that I can still fit the old ATO reservoir under it. That will save having to mount it externally, or putting it above the sump and worry about syphoning issues. I will also have room down there for an auto dosing setup if need be.

Still working on the layout of the sump to get everything in there, but it will house an Aqua Euro PS-55 skimmer and a Quiet One 2200 or Maxijet NJ1800 return pump (about 250-300gph after head loss). I'm liking the Aqua Euro skimmer for it's relatively small footprint, new bubble plate, low cost (key point), and the fact that it works. It's the same design as the Octopus skimmers (I have an NW110), just smaller.

Return pump is up in the air, and it's strictly about cost. I have used both brands, and like them both. The NJ1800 is built a little better, and has better bearings, but the QO2200 is considerably less money. Certainly not going back to a Danner Mag pump ever again.

So thats the short rundown of things so far. Hopefully I'll have the overflow in this weekend and will have more pictures.

I NO CAN WAIT, hey would you be willin to sell the BC14 tank?

Don't know if the shipping would make it worth your while :)

Sounds good evil and nice pick up on the tank. I like the cube tank look.

I know. I've been getting an itch for a cube for a while now. This deal was too good to pass up.

Will be tagin along on this one...

I just set up my Oceanic Reef Ready 37G, I had one hell of a time with the sump install. Is your display 24X18 ?

Overflow came in yesterday. Once again, another nice product by Glass-Holes. Like I mentioned before, I go the the toothless Super Nano. I'm looking forward to seeing how this performs.

Needless to say, the tank was drilled and painted within a few hours of getting the overflow in my hands :) Ended up centering it on the back wall with a 1/2" bulkhead for the return to its side. I'll get a picture up later.

I have the same tank and stand that I picked up on craig'slist. I ended up using it as a frag tank, but I really do like the tank, can't wait to see this thing up and running.

I'm hoping it won't be too much longer before I can do the swap. I still have to build the sump.

Right on, Can't wait to see it all together. My display is the RR 37 gallon oceanic. I really do like these tanks, there is a lot of potential.

I have this tank setup too. An eshopps rs-75 sump fits perfectly in the stand. I have it setup with a euro reef skimmer. I'll try to post a picture if I can but do check out the eshopps sump. It sells on eBay for around 140 shipped.

This tank is gonna suck. lmfao. j/k.

Now you've done it! No LED help for you ;)

I was looking at those, and while they are a decent price and will fit, there is no room for a fuge, which I'd really like to have. Also, DFS, while backordered, has those sumps for $125.

The sump I'm going to build will be 16x16 and will be able to fit a reasonable size sump and skimmer.

This should be real good. I was looking at a 30cube at the LFS the other day but they wanted way too much for it.

I have that same overflow and really like it. Why do you hate the Magdrives? I have a Mag5 on my setup and its quiet enough but I'd love something really silent.. Suggestions?

Oh and MORE PICS NOWWWWWW

Working on the pics ;)

While I'm sure not all Magdrives have the same issues, the Mag12 I got to run the closed loop on my 40B was really noisy. It also ran hot and consumed a lot of power for the amount of water it was moving. The Maxijet NJ5500 was a far better pump. Still contemplating the NJ1800, but the Quiet One 2200 is ahead just on cost alone. Trying not to incur the wrath of the wife on this

following you on this one too buddy. let's see what the gawd will create on this one

The sad thing is this will be complete before I get the lighting finished on the 40B display :( Should be good though. I'll get fresh sand for it once I transfer everything, but the original rock will be all that I'll put in there for now. I'll add some more at a later date.

Nice tank choice! I'm looking forward to the progress on this tank. Also on the 40br light...!

Anyways, looks good for now. I'm actually thinking of upping my tank (size wise) a notch. I'm moving to Sterling Heights at the end of the month and I'm tossing around the idea of maybe getting a 40br (to replace my current 29g) if I can find one cheap enough and then I can build a stand...

I figure I have to take the tank apart anyways, might be a good time to upgrade.

You'll be right around the corner from me! I have the old 40B that I cracked that you can have for free if you want to try and replace the back glass. Bottom is drilled though. New ones are going for about $130 now that Aqueon raised the prices.

Sounds like a good build! Oceanic makes nice tanks.

So, I didn't see the lighting guy mention what his plans are to brighten this fine tank up. What's up?

Still sticking with the 20" 150W Sunpod that is currently over the BC14. Don't have any plans for LEDs over this tank other than some supplimental.

Anyway. Pictures!

This is very tight evil! Nice and tidy and good dimensions for a big reef slope.

Is that a metal bulkhead? I imagine stainless steel? I have never seen anything other than PVC, I hope it doesn't deteriorate. But I'm sure you know exactly what your'e doing! :D

Link to comment

No no no. PVC all the way. I yell at people enough around here for having metals in their tanks to know better. ;)

Aquascaping is something that I haven't decided on yet. One of my favorite ideas so far is to build up most of the height in the corners and wrap it around from the back and sides like an atol/cove. Sounds good in my head :)

Thats a relief. I have titanium shafts in all my pumps which I cant stand, but I can't get ceramic shafted powerheads, skimmers etc anywhere (and I work in an aquarium) that are the right size and good quality.

Man I wish I did my overflow like that! That scape sounds good. And I just finished your LED bible: excellent work, I will exploit it thoroughly!

Link to comment

Grade 2 titanium if perfectly safe in salt water. Talk to anyone that has broken a ceramic shaft and they will tell you they are probably envious of your titanium setups.
