    Sand Bed Algae, Yuck.

Can you describe the algae? Dusty brown, gooey brown, reddish, bubbles? Was the tank started with dry rock out of curiosity? I only ask because if you are running gfo, doing a lot of water changes and have no detectable nitrates - you may be making it a good place for dinos.

Blue Assessor missing bottom half of its fin.

It's been a week since I added him. He has not come out for food, been seen either at sun rise, sun set or night. He has not been spotted in any of the caves or overhangs. I dont think he made it.

    Sand Bed Algae, Yuck.

I would say more flow. Do you jsut have the two returns with the one DC pump? Also, zero nitrate is no good, you want some for your corals. Also test Phosphate. Other than that, how is your pod population? Any thing you can do to increase bio diversity is good.

    First saltwater tank build

I’m still doing my research with QT procedures, and I’m finding conflicting arguments an all sides as usual haha. The medication aspect of it seems pretty intensive and that’s why right now I’m shying away from it because I don’t have access to those meds here in Canada. Now I do have the means to set up an old 15 gallon tank (will need to silicone the leaks) with a spare old HOB filter and heater (yes I’m already upgrading my heater, I can use the old one as emergency back up too) I also added the little bag of bio rings that came with the tank in chamber 2 So if I need to seed a QT or emergency tank, it’s ready! With the lack of meds I guess this would be an “observation tank” to be sure the fish is “healthy” before going in, but if it is sick I can’t help it... I guess still better than having to fallow the tank! I’m also going to see if the LFS is willing to quarantine and also mostly looking at buying tank bred fish, but I realize non of these are fail safe procedures. regarding the heater, I just ordered the cobalt neo-therm 50w heater (most are sold out everywhere, probably because of covid) my issue with the preset heater is that being in the chamber I guess it doesn’t need to turn on as much because the small space and pump increases the heat, so when I measure temp at the other end of the tank (tried 3 different thermometers) I’m getting 75 instead of the “preset” 78, so I wanted more control over the heat, the cobalt seems well liked, not made of glass, safety overheat feature and is REALLY small, which makes it a great choice. I don’t have an auto top up yet, but I’m using the hood so evap is minimal so far.
  13. What can I do to clean this up? It's a 25G lagoon, about 9 months old now. AI Prime with settings stolen from a thread here (was probably the Saxby or BRS settings, can't remember). I've been stocking very slowly, waiting to get through the ugly phase but not making any progress. I planned on minimalist filtration, so its just been filter pads, ceramic balls, a sad little lump of chaeto in the sump (which doesn't seem to be doing well). I had hoped that the 30% water change weekly with RO/DI would suffice. Added GFO & carbon a few weeks ago, but it doesn't look like its helping. Tests show zero ammonia/nitrite/nitrate, 9.5 dKH, 8.2 pH. Another wrinkle, mystery death (clown) two weeks ago, no sign of pest or infection, nothing was added to the tank in the previous month or since. Didn't want the added noise & fuss of running a skimmer, but does it look like I need one? Anything else to try first?
  14. Man this was a 4year old thread. Also to be fair their live goods are from Algae barn so they are drop shipped directly from Algae barn. They are not coming from Saltwater aquarium store. so shipping speed is with being dropped shipped. With saying that I bought my Reefer 350 there, skimmer, and all kind of other items and never had any issues.

    20 gallon long quarantine boredom

Zero ammonia as of two days ago going to get the lfs to check the nitrites you be safe(I never got that test cause i though if ammonia is gone and nitrates are showing up they are gone). Hopefully will add the first fish within the next week.

That’s good to know, I was thinking of a third colorful fish to add with the pink streak and tail spot so if the gramma makes the final list he will be last.

Does anyone know of a simple solution if I'm just missing the blues? Any good blue lights I can run alongside my nanobox retro? Alternatively may must rip out the nanobox and put something else in.

    Fish eating bristle worms? Possibly?

Mine does the same thing..... I posted a video a few weeks ago of her with a face full of bristles. She also like to dig around the pistol shrimps lair which is going to get her in trouble.

    • Feasibility of Classroom Tank
I was at a frag swap recently, and after talking to some members who were also teachers I was enticed by the idea of starting a nano reef for my middle school classroom.  I wanted to reach out to see if anyone has any experience or advice before I really commit to this.  I teach science and currently have a variety of animals and freshwater tanks...

    • Photosynthetic Gorgonians in Home Aquaria
Hello fellow reefers! My name is Billy and I am a big fan of the beautiful, tree-like soft corals known as gorgonians. Despite their reputation as delicate animals that are difficult to keep in captivity, most photosynthetic gorgonians are extremely hardy, and some even make excellent starter corals for those just getting into the hobby. With this in mind I decided to create this quick and dirty guide to encourage more home aquarists to experiment with keeping these wonderful animals, as I consider them to be some of the most captivating and attractive corals in the sea.
