That flame scallop is beautiful. I had two of those back in the 80's when I did my first ever salt water tank. It was just rocks and fish and cyano, but I kept the scallops alive for almost a year in spite of having no idea that it was impossible to keep flame scallops in a tank like that

hahahahahahaha i figured id give one a try plus it was his last electric flame so yea, electric light show! flame scallops are great, except when they flip out, although it is kinda funny. im going to try and get an updated shot, its so hard because he fell off my rock to where he is now and you have to go to the back of the tank to even enjoy him. lol

In my tank they tended to swim around. They can jet around by squirting water out the back. They were hilarious to watch :D

Holy shit really!?

Yeah, they really are entertaining, and beautiful. Unfortunately, I've found very few reports of people being able to keep them for very long. It's just so hard to keep them fed heavily enough without killing the whole tank. I'll be following along and sending good vibes!

Hello Reefers!

Updated FTS - 11-16-2015

20151115_1250001_zpsdidtgah9.jpg

I've been out of the hobby for a longggg time (about 10 years). I was originally going to do a large fresh water tank and grow out an Oscar... But the more i thought about it the more i wanted to do a reef system of sorts, so I dove head first into months of research. After looking at 4 different tanks I narrowed it down to the Fluval Edge 2.

Anyways on May 4th 2015 i went to a LFS picked up the tank, 40 pounds of Carib-sea life rock, salt, RO water, most of the basic equipment (test kits, filter media, and etc), and last but not least 5 gallons of a 30 gallon water change  . Can you say soft cycle? I went straight home to assemble the beast, i tossed in the rock and put sand around it. Later that day I threw in the water change and the RO water testing the salinity until I had reached the magic 1.026.069_zpsle4lkgqm.jpg

In the morning i got a package, it was my skimmer! So i went to install my Mame Protein Skimmer III when i had a sudden realization that the tank is hard to maintenance specifically the glass and the rocks weren't making it any easier. I rearranged the rock work for simplicity. I then let it sit for two weeks testing the parameters everyday... sometimes twice a day lol. The 13th day the tank was cycled! (i tested 5 times that day to make sure my eyes weren't tricking me).

The next day i went and bought a pair of amazing snowflake clowns. They were eating at the pet store and were in a community reef tank, so no aggression toward corals and other fish/inverts.

I let them get accustomed to their new environment, testing the parameters everyday for 2 weeks. Almost no bio-load with my maintenance schedule and Mame Protein Skimmer III! I seriously thought my test kits were defective, in fact my paranoia led me to buy a 2nd test kit . The levels are spot on with each other.

So I did it...I added 4 heads of Duncan Coral to my tank (one of my personal favorites). I put them towards the top of my tank because they didn't actually look that good. In hopes moving them to the top for a while would help them.

Sure enough it did. B)

FTS 1 month 3 weeks old-095_zpsh0ojity1.jpg

Testing my parameters twice a day at this point once i wake up and once before i go to bed. Nothing.....

So a week later i went to the fish store and bought a clean up crew 1 turbo snail, 2 two hermit crabs, and an emerald crab. I also bought 2 packs of Mysis shrimp and a smaller gravel cleaner.

Still testing my parameters a lot, everything's awesome 0AM-0NI-5NA 1.026sal 8.2ph

Looking at my tank suddenly i realize i have a perfect cave system for a Yellow Watchman Goby. My bio-load is low, well...long story short i got one, super healthy nice looking.

Clown fish photo-bomb, i swear shes a camera hog!

Not even a day later i bought a green leather, 1 three headed candy cane, 5 mysterious coral, a patch of green star polyps, and a colony of zoas. I also bought a 5.5 regular aquarium and made a nano frag tank (ogodimterrible$$$)

Fragged some of the Zoas and the gsp colony. Just turned the light on so nothing was opened yet.

I bit the bullet a week and a half later

:bling:omgomgomg

i turned them on before going to work and i was starting to regret getting the light until i came home to this...

Oh ya and i broke my Mame skimmer III its not completely screwed i can still use it, but ill have to get another. The bottom 2 inches is gone so i cut the air pipe to match the new height of the skimmer. I swear it wasn't my fault here's the colporate

cant wait to come back to this angle when i add more coral and get a better camera.

The acro is encrusting my rocks, common theme here... And my yellow brick road zoas finally opened up today, one took them 5 days to get used to the light lol.

excuse the detritus i cleaned it up after i was feeling a little bit better today.

The rainbow mini scolly is seriously coloring up, displaying new tints and transitions between colors, i expect this coral to be a top contender for prettiest coral i own. The Dragon eye is looking great too!

Those duncans look great!

Thanks! i freaking love em. Made a blend of food for them, they seem to be liking it. Maybe thats why i have so much detritus over by the duncuns and acans.......MORE CUC
