So I've been sitting here listening to Stone Sour and Skindred and screwing around in SketchUp and came up with something that I'd love to do.

Introducing the Dueling Towers Concept

Now my SketchUp skills aren't all that and I don't know how to do some things in it, but picture both tanks drilled on the back panel for an overflow and return nozzle.
This setup would be two 10 gallon hex tanks side by side over a 40b sump. One would be a reef, the other a macro display.

That would be awesome! But what if u cut out the middleman and plump the two hex together? Would that even be possible without a sump?!?!

Yeah it would be possible but then you'd lose +/-20 gallons of water and a place to hide all the equipment.

Who now has the strength to stand before the union of the Two Towers!

If I were to ever get a chance to build this I'd definitely make a construction paper eye and put it between them. :haha:

I finally stopped procrastinating and did something with the 40b, at least to get it off the stand and out of the way for now. Now I have access all the way around the tank so I can really see what's going on in there.

My mystery sps managed to frag itself, it looks like one of the little nubs broke off. It has 3-4 polyps on it so I thought it would be neat to see if it would encrust for me so I glued it to one of the higher up rocks directly under the par38. It's also been doing some strange coloring lately. I had it on the bottom of the tank for a few days while I was stress testing the floating rocks and the polyps turned a teal color while it was down there. I moved it back up and the body, which was always a magenta before, now has some green in it. So that's interesting.

The macro in the DT, what I believe to be Plocamium sp. (reefcleaners doesn't list it anymore), has gotten knocked around. Actually a while back I had to pull one out of the turbo's mouth... Two sprigs are mia, I think I know where one is and I'll have to worm my enormous hand down into the rock for it, the third that is glued at the very top of the tank is finally showing some growth and has sprouted some new branches.

The T5HO is making a come back as well! I was up really early this morning and was in an antsy mood so I grabbed that and hung it over the tank. It isn't pretty (seriously all my hardware looks like thrift store rejects) but it works great. I have it set to come on just a few hours during the day, 11-3 or 11-4, somewhere around there.

Aaaaaaand I flashed a new rom on my phone this morning (CyanogenMod 11!) so I'm going to put the camera through the ringer once the tank is lit up for the day.

Til then, PEACE OUT SCRUBS!

I have a photoooooo BOMB!

Gonna throw up some of just the leds and then you can see the difference with the T5HO light added in.

Speaking of photobomb...

Lookit I have babies! There's also another one the size of a dime in the cave. It's already fully colored up.

You can see that little sps nub here.

Totally forgot to get the other two sprigs mounted. A week ago this was a straight shoot.

And here's a really good example to show just how hard it is to take photos under leds.

My little People Eater zoas have started to gain some red in with the magenta. IRL they're becoming very close to this http://zoaid.com/index.php?module=Gallery2&g2_itemId=9200

The light roughed in. I'll get the wires cleaned up later. That jug is going to be my gravity ATO, and the Deep Blue tank... I don't know yet. See that spot on the wall? That's from the splash coming off the HoB I had on the 40b early on in it's life. It doesn't wipe off.

And a FTS with both lights on. Looks MUCH better IMO!

Mystery sps. Seriously someone tell me what this is. It's amazingly difficult to find sps id's by random browsing.

Baby shoom shot again, this time with T5 on.

I haven't posted many pics of these zoas because I can never get the color to show right. It has two type on it, one is (colors from mouth out) green>dark purple>purple>green, the other is red/orange>purple/red/orange.

All that tissue is still gone but the rest of it looks great. It's even growing more over the plug.

Ok now a whole bunch of shots trying to get a decent one of the clowns. It's basically impossible with a phone.

The lobo you can see here has really started to get some decent color in it. I've been giving it mysis and it seems to be doing well from it.

Dang that is a photo bomb. Love it.

Chewy. Have you thought about mounting the T5 vertical?

Is you built the 2 towers. The T5 could be between them lighting the whole column of both tanks simultaneously. You could build reflectors to shield your view from the light.

WOW !!! That photo dump just left me gobsmacked :)

Gobsmacked, I like it!

Actually yes I did think of that but it was a very brief passing thought. I didn't think too much about it because I couldn't figure out a way that would leave the tank as view-able as I want it to be. It bugs me enough that one panel is covered by the pvc, I wish I could have full 360 view of the tank.

Oh. Your mystery SPS could be a Pocillopora. Needs to color up though.

Ah that looks very close. It actually does have a lot more color than the pics show. For some reason my phone just refuses to pick it up. Those top down pics are close, but the polyps are a little bluer and the body has an almost green shimmer or highlight to it. It depends on how the light hits it. It's kinda like that cloth material that changes hues depending on how light hits it.

You can have the 360 view if you plumb the tanks on the bottom.

And the T5 in the middle would have to be removable for maintenance, you don't want water on it.

Also the middle panels that face each other on the hex will need to be more than your head width apart if you want to be able to get in there for a view.

Ha I do have a big head I guess. I'd love to plumb a hex through the bottom. That's the dream I had before I set this up. The logistics of the idea in my head just aren't possible right now, not where we live and not with my current (lack of) income. After working in the 10 I'd definitely want to do it with a 20 hex instead. It would be very crammed in the 10. I have a hard enough time working in it right now because of my monster hands.

I know right? I love how just adding that one light makes the tank so much brighter. Leds, while I love 'em, can actually make a tank look pretty dark overall. I especially like the clarity of it, how you can (almost) see through it all the way around.
