markalot
API Phosphate kit? Really? Reef tanks are interesting in that the typical parameters seem to be controlled easily, either via macro algae or as part of the biofilter in the rock. I'm not sure that's the entire story though, because chemical imbalances in the many things we don't measure can lead to those strange ... my corals are suffering but everything tests ok ... issues. I only change the water in my tanks when things start to not behave as expected. Other than testing KH, Calcium, and occasionally Mg, I have given up testing everything else. Link to comment
Chew_Magna
Macro algae has been growing like a champ! Maybe its eating it all up? Yep, and the fuge is basically full. A week ago I tried floating a bag down there and it just ended up... sitting on the chaeto... not even really in the water. I need to trim it out but I don't want to lose all the critters that are in the macro. API Phosphate kit? Really? I've never tested KH or Mg, I think I've tested Cal once back when I first got my kit. All I'm doing right now is dosing iodine and calcium once every few weeks, a few drops of Vitamin C when I think about it. That and topping off entails my maintenance right now. I'm going to make a habit of doing a blackout for two or three days every few weeks, the tank always looks much better after doing one. Link to comment

Chew_Magna
Everything is looking awesome Chew, great photos . Thanks Nothing new with the tank right now, doing another two/three day blackout, it seems to really help with the health of the tank. I'm experimenting with the Koralia 240 and the WP-10 in the tank at the same time. It helps a lot with the flow but I don't like having that much equipment in there. It's a problem getting proper flow in a tank that's this tall and narrow. If I had the standard pile of rocks in the bottom it would be much easier to manage, but I just had to go make a pillar in there LOL. Link to comment

Chew_Magna
Two, maybe three months of growth. Chew_Magna
I'm thinking about setting up the 40b again (yeah, yeah, I know). I really like this tank but it's incredibly difficult to work in, especially when you're a 6'4" behemoth with boat paddle hands. I have a ton of gha on the back glass panels that I just can't remove because it's blocked by the overflow, and it's worked it's way onto the rock work. I had to completely remove the top rock because of it (the back part was literally covered in it, I couldn't even see that it was that bad). I talked to my friend at the lfs yesterday about it, I was seeing about getting some dry sand for the 40b. He broke out these two 5 gallon buckets that were completely full of used sand, looked to be Fiji Pink but I have no idea really. It was full of random rubble and huge ass snail shells. He asked me if I had any issue using old sand, I told him I don't, I've done it before and I know how to "fix" it, and in fact the sand in my tank right now has been recycled twice by myself. He said he'd figure out what they want for it, so we'll see. I have my bday coming up soon so I'm hoping to get this rolling along with that. But anywho. I pulled out almost all of the fire fern from the DT. The stubs are all there, so it'll grow back. I had to really trim it down because it was literally blocking the light from the rest of the tank. Even the stuff I put at the bottom of the tank was starting to crowd everything out. Stuff grows like mad for me. Here's some very ho hum quickie pics. https://flic.kr/p/npQsag'>https://flic.kr/p/npQsag'>IMG_0944 by https://www.flickr.com/people/104297337@N06/'>whyteaboi, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/npQsvr'>https://flic.kr/p/npQsvr'>IMG_0943 by https://www.flickr.com/people/104297337@N06/'>whyteaboi, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/no7bR1'>https://flic.kr/p/no7bR1'>IMG_0942 by https://www.flickr.com/people/104297337@N06/'>whyteaboi, on Flickr I see Flickr did some listening to their people. Chew_Magna
It's my barfday! Sorry for the lack of updates, I've kinda let the tank go a little in preparation of moving back into the 40. Still not there yet, have to save up a little more cash first. Rawr! Link to comment
Tamberav
Happy Bday! I totally understand about trying to clean a small hex. It is sooo difficult! That is one of the big reasons I took mine down and am now converting my 40B to a mandarin tank. Link to comment
Chew_Magna
Thanks for the bday wishes everyone! Happy Bday! I totally understand about trying to clean a small hex. It is sooo difficult! That is one of the big reasons I took mine down and am now converting my 40B to a mandarin tank. Yeah it's a real PITA. I've really let it go and the glass looks more like that dimpled light diffuser right now... Hopefully by next payday I'll have enough to get the 40b going again. I might also have a couple lettuce nudis as well. Link to comment

Chew_Magna
Sup everyone! I'm not dead! I finally started working again and managed to pick up another hobby that's been eating up all of my spare time. The tank kinda took a backseat for a while... So I picked up a couple somethings to help remedy the situation. https://flic.kr/p/o54TEp'>https://flic.kr/p/o54TEp'>IMG_1055 by https://www.flickr.com/people//'>whyteaboi, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/omkCSN'>https://flic.kr/p/omkCSN'>IMG_1054 by https://www.flickr.com/people//'>whyteaboi, on Flickr They're doing the float thing right now. Chew_Magna
Well, it's been neglected pretty severely for a while now. Looks like for now, FOWLR with macros and the few surviving coral I have left. Link to comment
hey
I think its a very attractive macro display, honestly reefkeeping is more about what works for how you maintain your tank not really what works for others. If the macro display makes you happy I can't think of a more low maintenance way to run a tank lol. Link to comment
