Ugly now, but we all know what they become!

Very true! Soo, diatoms are just about all gone and all the parameters are zeroed out (ammonia, nitrite and no3). Tank is technically cycled but still going to give it another 2-3 weeks before stocking it. Am actually going to toss some food in there to see if anything spikes. Just want to make sure the bacteria is hardy before adding anything.

Funny you should say that......and yes I know they do get big but, I've already got a home lined up for her when she gets too big. At the moment she is still very small and eating amazingly. This is honestly 30 minutes after adding her to the tank.

My buddy thought it was a vlamingi by the description I gave him but it is infact a bluespine unicorn (Naso unicornis).

Ya, what's the status on the tank?

I was all set on buying the halides, almost even bought 2x250w radium bulbs then my friend brought to my attention how insanely hot they would make the room where the tank is in. I wasn't even thinking about it honestly, I was just excited to do it. Decided I wanted to just stick LEDs, didn't really want to run the radion pucks, just because I didn't want cool white leds. So I picked up

 

4 Luxeon M 12w 4k chips

8 Luxeon M 12w RB chips

 

that there should be enough, if you're just doing a 2:1 rb:ww light but I decided to add as much hyper violet as possible so I picked up 28 hyper violet leds. They're going to be run by 5 LDD drivers (2 for the hyper violets, 1 for the 4k whites and 2 for the rb chips). Just went with a typhon, I know the storms are really nice but, it's only a 3 channel light, plus with meeps typhon rewrite I can have 256 dim points. Each cluster (14 HV's, 4 RB, and 2 4k chips) will be on a 5"x21.5" heatsink, should be plenty on heat dissipation, the heatsinks are thick too. I actually have to wait on LGB, one of the drivers came with a broken pin and one of the pin sockets on the LDD board was broke off so they should be sending me replacements soon. Pretty stocked about the build. I was going to add true blue and cyan but I know cyan offers nothing beneficial and I don't think I'll be fine without true/cool blue.

Looks awesome, I'm definately interested in how that light is going to turn out. I'n running a diy led fixture alongside a reefbreeders value fixture over my 75g. I was going to add another RB fixture but I'm thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it, atm.

I just hope the light isn't a huge failure. I guess we'll see. I think alot of leds lack the 430nm spectrum, which seems to be a pretty crucial spectrum, also 450nm is important. I also think the 4k whites will take care of the little bit of red spectrum that is needed.

The 4K M will be ok. Not as good as the 85CRI ones, but way better than pretty much anything Cree.

 

You're gonna really want some blue in there, your light's gonna be way purple without it, and maybe some cyan.

Won't it look almost like a 2:1 rb:ww light w/HV? I know violet by itself you can see but if I remember from my last light, you couldn't even notice the violets were on with any other color on.

 

Edit: I actually almost ordered the BXRA's but, I'm sort of over ordering parts from multiple companies. Let me look at these BXRAs again real quick. Aren't your running the Vero 29's now?

When you mix lower-kelvin white and royal blue you make purple, especially with Philips chips. The violet aren't going to make it look purple, you won't be able to see those with the others on

 

I've got Vero 10. At 700mA, they're over 2200 lumens each. The Vero 29 is wayyyy too powerful unless you're keeping the LEDs on the ceiling lol.

Maybe I will add some cw just to brighten it up a bit. Thoughts on adding cw?

Short answer, don't bother, it can't fix the purple color.

My problem is, I've only got 22 watts and 0.8A left on the P/S and one channel left on the controller. I could always get that 350w 48v 7.3A P/S off Ebay, get a different LDD board and add some cool blues and cyans. What about adding cool blue and cyan on the same channel?

That would be fine, or run the blue on the same channel as the royal blue.
