ArabTanker's Next Chapter - Photo Dump On Every Page

I sort of wish I went with the more traditional scape. When building my "slope", I threw random rocks onto a shelf in under 30 seconds, I had the most beautiful rock scape that Wouk have fit perfectly in our tanks. I wish wish WISH I wasn't so stubborn. Iirc, I actually said "wow" outloud when I noticed what I did, and I NEVER talk to myself.

You didnt like the large rock / rocks from post #106?

Not really. I do desire some more hight on the middle pile of rocks, however. What do you think of it?

Man i remember those days. It's the only time your super excited to see algae in your tank :D

Is that your final scape or are you still tinking with it?

Haha. I came home from school so excited. It grew so quick. I only saw small spots as of tuesday (2 days ago) night. Now its everywhere. And its producing oxygen quicker than the plants in my freshwater tank. Haha.

Not sure yet. What do you think?

I know what you mean man. This is the original scape I've had during the goldfish pictures haha. I haven't changed much.

On a side note. I just saw Iron Man 3.

Those are pretty big chunks of rock. What if you hollowed/chiseled some out to make some caves tunnels. Broke them into smaller to make a cove, arch etc.. dunno its late but just some idears GL

They just push on. There is no snap or anything to hold them, but I've never had one fall off in the year I've used them.

I might do that. The rocks are actually naturally arced on the bottoms. Its just filled with sand. I did that purposely for a goby/shrimp pair. But they could use some more room.

It was ehh. I mean. I expected a lot more out of the story. But still-good movie.

Okay. Diatoms seemed to die down a little so I tested the water to see what was going on.

It looks like:

Ammonia- ~0 ppm

Nitrites- Idk man. Somewhere between 0.25-5.0 ppm. But its there.

Nitrates- 80-160 ppm

So. Am I at the approaching the end of my initial cycle? Is it normal for the diatoms to die out? Should I add another raw shrimp?

So are you still thinking of upgrading? Lol. I just added a fridmani pseudo. And a yasha goby to my 12l. Hopefully next reefcleaners order I make, John will have a pistol for me.

You almost finished. They should disappear.

So it is normal?

How did you know lol.

I need to make an order with John too haha. What does your cuc look like?

Will there be anything stopping me from keeping sps?

Link to comment

I actually just ordered from him. A juvenile pincushion, lettuce nudi, pistol, and some caulerpa for the mantis tank. Lol. What would keep you from keeping sps? As long as the water quality is good and you have sufficient flow, it'll be fine.

My cuc is currently a sand sifting star since my harlequin is Mia apparently... About 20 nassarius(. I bought then for the mantis, but their shells are too tough to break through) 3 astrea, a turbo, and a handful of dwarf ceriths, along with 3 or 4 Florida ceriths. I was planning on beefing up with 4 or 5 more turbos, but for johns prices I figured I'd order from him and get something interesting, rather than dull snails.

Yeah, I laugh in the face of those who say 1 turbo per 15 gallons.

Hmm. I have no idea where im going with the cuc. What do you think I should start out with? I don't think I have enough bio-film as of right now to support one for more than a week or two. I think im going to add another raw shrimp to get the nutrients back up. That should cause another bloom and bulk up the beneficial bacteria.

Do you think your goby and pistol will pair up? Is it common for them to get separate holes?

Link to comment

I don't like the idea of using shrimp at all tbh. I'd go with ceriths, dwarf ceriths, and a few nassarius to start off with. Add more as you see fit. If you have actual hair algae break out, I say get a turbo. If you ever want some variation or a cooler animal that doubles as a cuc member, take out the more common stuff and give them away/ feed them to some Lps.

What do you use for extra nutrients?

How many of each? What do you think of Dwarf Planaxis? They look cool. I liked the description on rc.

Wait... I can feed snails to coral? Sherif is about to have some serous fun.

Do snails breed easily?

Most desirable snails die well before you would ever notice anything. I have only noticed limpets breeding successfully. I actually had a video of one spraying its load in the open. ;). Larger Lps will eat up to Cerith size snails and maxi mini anenomes will eat anything. Lol. I've literally fed it random shit I found in my tank. The thing you need to remember is that you aren't setting a tank up to take care of snails, you are adding snails to take care of your tank.alot of people worry about supplementing their snails diet in te beginning and then regret it because they need to fight off hard to get rid of algaes. If there isn't enough food for "x" amount of "y" snails, be happy that you save that little bit of money to put towards a frag or two. Id start off with 5 ceriths ( from John you will probably get 7), 20 dwarfs( you'll get a cool thousand lol) and atleast 10 nassarius if you plan on feeding moderate-moderately heavy. Ideally if you want to pay for next day shipping, limpets and chitons are AWESOME at eating algae. Limpets are like ceriths on steroids, and fuzzy chitons are great and eat just about all types of algae, but move very, very slowly and normally only stay within a few inches of its original spot. I ordered a few planaxis along with another small species. I noticed a few crawl out of the tank and I just threw them back in. I honestly couldn't tell you how many I have left because they are actually smaller than my "sand" grade. Other than that, I'd just start off low and add as you deem necesary. Stay away from nerites. They forget that they need water to live in rimless tanks. The ones I had left spent more hours on my floor before bein thrown back in than they did being in my tank.

I know I am overlooking alot of stuff probably, but its almost 4 in te morning. Lol. I'll let you know when I notice what i am missing. Btw.., how do you pronounce your name. Is it pronounced sha-reef? No pun intended with the reef part.

One thing I did like about the planaxis is that they are so small that they actually walk along with top of the tanks rim, with room on either side of them. THAT is how tiny they are. Kinda cute for a snail.

I actually really wanted hermits but I read that they kill snails and coral for shits and giggles some times. So I stayed away from them for now. Although. I did remember about a bag of snail shells my family brought over from Dubai.

So. Now that I know I can supply shells. I may buy some. But we'll see.

Hermits aren't as bad as people make them out to be. They are just doing their job when it looks destructive. I've had hermits look like they were killing small fish and picking at corals, but all they are doing are cleaning up already dead fish and eating algae growing in between coral crevices.

I think they add a cool variety to the clean up crew. They do a great job on the hair and filament algae since they have claws that can cut it short.

Yes they are. :D They do a decent job with hair algae, it's true, and will work on it longer than snails will, but once it exceeds a certain length they will not touch the stuff.

Then I might as well as pick a few from a lfs.

I dont think I'll have a serious issue with algae. Worst case I could just hook up one of my phoso-ban reactors. Plus I don't think I'm really going to over stock the system. But we'll see.

Thanks guys.

Looked like some sort of hermit crab so I went and got one of the shells I talked about before and placed it in the little plate I quarantined him in.

Yep. Its a hermit. Hes in the shell to the right.

Snails in the tank. I dumped each bag in a different location so I can watch how each one reacts to the new tank and such.

These are the bag of snails I found the hermit in. Im keeping an eye on them to make sure they are all alive. I think maybe the hermit was hosting one of the shells. I cant tell. I feel like such a nub.

Well. Anyone know what kind of hermit crab it is?

A few minutes ago I found another crab. It was a tiny blue legged. Both are int he sump till I decide what I want to do with them.

Sorry for the garbage cell pics. But hey. Better than nothing.

Hermits are cool, not sure which ones you got though. I like them because they have more character then snails and if they fall over they can right themselves without assistance, most snails can do that.

Yeah. I know one is a blue legged. Not sure about the other. When I found the blue legged it was eating one of the snails. Thats why I threw it into the sump.

Today I woke up and found this on the back glass. Not sure what it is.

They look like baby snails/baby abalone to me. If they are they are harmless but I could be wrong with the ID.

I just got enraged with jealousy because I thought that was a tiny ass octopus hitchhiker, but now I see that it is a hermit.
