I had some growing on the back wall and bottom sides in two weeks after starting it. All the corals have great extension to them and definitely appear to be showing more growth to them then some of the same types in other tanks.

I am setting up a 25 gallon SPS tank currently and I am going to use the blocks in that tank as well as see how it goes. I am very interested in seeing how they handle a the alk/calc balance on a more demanding tank.

Did you end up using the blocks in your 25? Did they give you the results you hoped for?

100!!! Woohoo!!!

I dont even know what impresses me more> The fact that every edge on your canopy looks like it was designed and etched/sealed with a computer (it looks that accurate) or the fact this thread is approaching twelve thousand hits. thats a very *serious* amount of exposure for your reef, you can tell people have looked at it over and over as it was referred along the 'net. handshake to you sir.

$10 says lizbeth has this thread as her web browser homepage

purhaps somone made a web page with 21 frames and 20 of them were his thread and they had it auto refresh every 5 secconds. then they opened it in 10 browsers. that is 4000 hits a minute. it would be almost as bbad as when the commie hackers took over the site.

For anyone that doesn't know commie hackers actually DID take over the site. I serriously am not making this up.

I must say, I am duly humbled and impressed as well... left for vacation a week ago and I thought this thread was just a bit over 11,000 hits.... I see today it has blown WELL past the 12 mark.... WOW is all I can say.

I think this little tank has sparked a huge interest in people on really taking the nano plunge or at least one in it's size range. The interest in this thread shows that but I think more so is all of the email and pm's I have recieved since I first set it up. I can't even begin to tell you all how many people have said to me that just seeing it inspired them or they had always wanted to do one and this really got them going.... that to me is way more impressive than the "hit counter". The hood and light set up has recieved soooo many compliments.... I think it's given people the motivation to really jump on the DIY wagon as well. Those of you familiar with me or the majority of my posts already know what a huge proponent of that I am.... can find it or afford it? MAKE IT OR MAKE IT WORK! hehe So you can imagine how thrilled I am over that whole aspect of the interest.

Sooooooo, thanks to all of you for all the kind words and interest, ya make me feel all warm and fuzzy....lol

okay.... Ben, the 25 gallon tank is on hold right now. I decided to bump the size up on it... more like a 30 to 50 gallon tank and want to wait till we get moved (hopefully that will be very soon). Instead I decided to go all SPS in my minibow so have been working on that instead and YES I will be putting the "blocks" in that one.

Brandon... :) shakin' yer hand back.... thank YOU sir

ad..... hmmm, I'll have to check with Lizbeth on that one, last I knew she had her homey page on Harbor Freight or Berland's House of Tools.... er I think, gawd me digs the DIY chicks!,hehehe

and finally, well there tgboobert.... I'm wondering about this strange attraction to math you have developed lately. Um, good for you? hahaha (psssst, not sure about the commie hackers but there MIGHT be some family (mine) members involved!...LOL

ttyl... yer friend "GRAZER" ;)

Glazer,

I'm new here and what got me to join was reading this thread.

Now that I've seen your 2.5 Ive got to have one!!!

I'm going to make my own canopy and wondered if you could tell me (now that yours has been up a little while) how tall the canopy is and if you feel that it is high enough or too high?

Any info would help.

Thank you (and the tank is awsome!!!)

That's awsome donk.... this is what I was talking about earlier, I think that is so cool. And of course thank you for the kind words.

The hood I made has 2.5 inches of inside height from top edge of tank. I originally planned on going with a 2x13 kit from AHSupply but then stumbled upon the Bookworms. It's working out great but this puts the 'worms, or at least their acrylic housing right down almost onto the water surface.... I only had heat issues a couple times this past summer when the house got a bit hot due to the wife's crazy desire for fresh air...hmmm, that woman, hehe

So I dunno, if I was doing it all over again, Bookworms in mind, I might consider an extra 1/2" in there? Maybe? sort of? hmmm, would it make any diff? Prolly not.... okay, 2 1/2" and that's my final answer.....lol

Lol, I'm also new to this site and this little 2.5 gallon nano from the first time I had seen it... I knew i need it one. Even though I'm in the middle of doing a 37 Gallon Tank this thing just blew me away. The main reason is beacause its got such cheap lights!!! Second your woodworking is Awesome! I am currently just getting my job as a paper boy and will be pulling in some dough along with my allowance (roughly $200 a month and I'm 14) and

Again that is the MOST beautiful tank I have ever seen with all the pretty frags and such. I'm wondering just how much did that little baby cost you for just the hardware?

LOL..... uh thanks Jon (I read the rest and thanks for that too! ;) )

Cost in hardware... hmmmm, tank was 7, HOB and heater 25,

20 bucks for the two bookworms, switched out the bulbs for 15 bucks(the two original light the 'fuge on another setup) and the hood...well, um..hmmm nothing I guess other than time, built it at work from wood out of the dumpster and well, I used stain and lacquer at work, is that stealing? Naw, they owed me dammit!..lol

Sooo, what did that all add up to... 67 bucks? Another 40 or 50 in total for what's in it.... definitely beyond a doubt the cheapest tank I've ever set up, well it's the smallest too, go figure.

Hey Glazer, your due for some update pictures of that bad boy. You may as well do another full spread.;) This stuff is like porn, I am looking forward to a big centerfold layout:D I know it has had to have gone through some changes, (Chit, I have added 8 new frag, a feather duster and new white sand substrate in just the past week to my 2.5), and I know you have got some new goodies in there. Inspireing minds want to know.

Glazer,

First of all, I have been following your progress and just wanted to say congrats on a job well done.

I am so inspired that I will now attempt my own 5.5g tank. I have already gathered most of the materials and although I couldn't find that bookworm light, I found a similar CF worklight by Bayco at Walmart. However, I wanted to change the bulb but noticed that it only has 2 straight pin instead of the four that JBJ has. FOrgive me but I am all new to this; did you just plugged in the 4pin JBJ into the 2 pin socket or did you have to modify something? From what I can see I have the 6500k CF that's labeled PL-13. Is this the same one that came with yor Bookworm? I bought 2 of these lights and am planning to change just one to the JBJ actinic. Hopefully you, or anyone else for that matter, can help answer my questions :

Bayco is the company that makes the bookworms.

All 13 watt power compact lights i have seen are GX23 base, which is the same as the bayco lights. 2 pins, with a fat thing in between  any 13w aquarium bulb will plug into there.

Link to comment

No...13 watt aren't all GX23. There is a G23 which has one latch bump on it's "thing" as opposed to the GX23 which has two. They also come in a four pin designs which are either 2GX7, GX23-2 or GX24Q-1. And there is another two pin diagonal design that's a G24D-1. ;)

Link to comment

i know ;) thats why i said all that i've seen, i figured there were other pinbases too, as i've seen several for the other bulbs, besides straight and square...

ok i dont know what i'm talkin about, thanks lizbeth :)

The JBJ will work, I swithched out a stock bookworm for a 50/50 JBJ, but think the replacedment will be from Hellolights. The JBJ was $20 for the bulb (more then the damn fixture) and they are like $6 at hellolights which are as good if not better then the JBJ bulbs.

The mounts come with the light as part of the clamp assembly. Here's the Lowes version and you can see the clamp with the mount holding the light:

The mounts are easy to take off and retrofit to your needs.

Hehe, THANKS Ox and the rest for fielding all the light questions... Cool! I got this baby (thread) running on auto pilot! :woot:

You sure started something here Glazer =P

Wellp... Just went shopping and got my supplies. In all came up to $64. Pic attached.

The lights were $15 a piece. Not the 10$ I was hope'n for but better than $20.

Tank was $11

Filter was $16, didn't have the AQ mini so I got the Whisper PF 10.

Thermometer $2

I'm gonna wait and see if I need a heater. I'm sure I will but still am going to wait.

I was looking at some Repti-Sand. Its REALLY fine sand, almost powder and its only like $8 a 10lb bag. Do you guys think it would be any good? Its alot cheaper than the 'live' sand they sell for $20 a 10lb bag. Ecpecially since I only need 2-4lbs of the stuff. What do you guys think? Some repti-sand with a cup full of my established LS from my 20g for seeding?.

Here's a link. It say no colors, dyes or chemicals.

Hehehe, Woohoo! That's awesome floppy.... 2.5's EVERYWHERE! :woot:

I think you are going to need the heater too... I tried in the beginning without one but just got too much temp swings. Your filter alone will prolly suffice at keeping water temp maybe 2 to 3 degrees above ambient room temp but depending how you set up your lighting good chance it could push it to around 80.

I've seen some of the "reptile sand" you speak of... not sure if that would be okay or not... I did notice on the bag something to the effect of "excellent clumping" ability so have no clue if they add anything to it for that or not. Don't you have the Pet Supplies Plus chain store up around you? They have small bags (5 lbs.) of argonite sand for like 3 bucks... and that is plenty in addition to your cup of live sand. I've got a mix of about everthing in mine... playsand, argonite, crushed coral and some junk out of one of my other tanks.

Anyway, GOOD LUCK with it and post pics as you progress!

Now I just need to plan for an original hood and base so I don't totally copy you =P. My mom's bf has a table saw, band saw, and routers and what ever wood working tools I need so it'll be a fun project for me. Hopefully he'll help me out to =P

So whaddya think about the reptile sand? Give it a shot?

Matt

Edit: Ooops didn't read past the heater part before. Yeah I just took out a good pound or so from my 20g. I think I'll give the reptile stuff a shot. i haven't seen 5lb bags of aragonite any where. I'll let you know how it goes.
