Hey UTR, Your design is bad azz and I finally have a Skimmer on my 29 gal tank and not have to buy one for $180. I Went ahead and made 2 incase I need to run both to keep my tank clean.

I do have to say as of now there are not that much foams due to the fact that I empty my tank out the night before and clean the heck out of the sides. I Let go of my tank for a while there because I was too cheap to buy a skimmer (because I didnt know why the tank need one, NOW I KNOW). It started to grow algae and my tank was neglected. I dont knwo what the reason was but I found an interest in my tank again. Espaecially now that I found this thread and made this Skimmer. I think its an awesome idea. Saved me over a $100 in buying one. Now I have 2 to use. Well UTR, its pretty cool that there are hobbyist like you out there. Thanks again bro.

how about asking admin here to sticky a closed non postable summary of the skimmer NR/ UTR built, on the basic design/ cost, the common mods, pics, faq, with a link to here for discussion....

LOL, thanks for the 'shout-out', but Im happier to know that your giving your neglected tank some attention again!

NCNBilly,

got a digital camera? The best way for anyone here to help you on this is to post a pic. We could just say "just wait and see"...and often it is just break-in-time...but there could be a mfg. flaw that we dont know about.

I'll take a few when I get home tonight. I'm thinking that its just surface tension created from the weldon or static from the plastic. The foam has a nasty brownish cast to it too. Kinda like rancid whipped cream. Yum

UTR, is it because I did a major cleaning of my tank that I am not getting any gunk from my tank? It doesnt even bubble up that much anymore. As a matter of fact, Is it because my water is too clean? I guess time will answer these questions for me.

I am running both of them with the 802 Powerhead I have. You are da man UTR. This project has been fun and only cost me a little over $60. These two should be good enough to skim my 29 gal tank. Thanks again UTR. Ok next project... Got chiller? LOL Start thinking UTR. I need a chiller now. LOL

whats the best pump to use to for the skimmer. I've been using a rio 180 as stated on the first page, but i want a little more power. Can everyone that has built this skimmer please tell me what pump you are using and what the result are like? Thanks

UTR,

Did the copyright issue ever get resolved? I would love to get one of these, but living in an Apt makes DIY projects quite a pain in the butt.

If anyone is willing to sell just the skimmer without the injection, let me know. I'd be interested in getting one or two.

Thanks

Bobajum,

It is more fun making this yourself. You can find a plastic specialist place and ask them to cut the pieces for you. Glue it and drill the holes yourself with a drumel. Once you understand how its done you can make yourself a bunch and if you ever upgrade to a bigger tank, you already know how. Its really easy, trust me on this.

I used a laser cutter to cut the parts for a pair of these, and assembled them, and then went to HD to get cpvc, but as it turns out, cpvc isn't code in san diego. I tried drilling flexible tubing, but they don't have parts to seal the end, and the tubing may not be firm enough to handle the injectors without deformation. Any ideas?

go to the plumbing section and look for sprinkler plumbing they have cylinder pipe great for the injetion with both ends males threaded. also in that section the are end cap that have threaded open for the cylinder pipes and for plastice tubing for the power head that is black on the right hand of this picture

and just get a threaded cap from the pvc fitting

UTR many thanks for this great thread - quick question on the spray bar - do you glue up the end cap and 90 deg? or are they dry fit?

I am going to test tomorrow. Made the 14"

Dry fit. There is enough pressure to hold on the endcap, and that way you can take it apart for easy cleaning. Any possible leaks are handled by the o-rings.

hey undertheradar,

kinda had an idea like this awhile back, but I'm a college student and live on campus, so I have no tools or anything to do projects. When I come home I normally have enough spare time just to get a water change done on my tank. I read up until page 26, of the posts, but was wondering if you ever decided whether you would sell these or not. I have a prizm on my tank, (they're crap I know, but it pulls out some stuff, and it was real cheap-better than nothing) but I'd like to try one that you made. My tank is alittle bigger, 20 gallon reef with 10 gallon fuge, but I need to try something, don't want my tank to get out of hand, which it has a few times while I've been away. Let me know what you think in the thread of a PM, whichever you like, thank you.

Thanks and WOW - made the mistake of testing in fresh water and the bubble size was large - moved to my 10g salt and WOW! Spray bar holes were a little under 1/8th and using a minijet 606.

Great design Thanks!

Question: I am getting a large bubble building under the return baffle. I have the pump running at full capacity – did not make a difference when I restricted flow. I built the 14' to the measurements etc. on diagram displayed in this thread. Would it help the put a second baffle slightly higher up causing a 'Z' water path?
