The Rainy Day Aquarium
Did a bit of work on the tank today. Caribsea's nano tree kit made it a breeze to scape and I'm happy with the results. Kind of a bummer but the ballast for the light is "kaput", I have a replacement ballast headed my way hopefully, just a waiting game now, but I'm stoked to get this tank wet. 2 Quote Link to comment

Justind823
Woohoo halide! I do miss my Sunpod from yesteryear... Great little setup you have there, love the scape! I hope you have a good sized ATO reservoir for that halide 😅 1 Quote Link to comment

I have a 5 gallon reservoir so hopefully that’s enough! I had to move the tank down to the main floor because my office gets about 80f in the afternoon with the A/C running (very poor insulation) with a halide I think the tank would overheat 😵 1 Quote Link to comment
The Rainy Day Aquarium
Okay, metal halides absolutely slap. It’s been a week since I’ve added my ATO and I’ve burned through about 2.5 gallons so far; not too bad and I’m actually surprised. I also have a Fluval air powered hob breeder box that I’ll be using as a display refugium of sorts. I’m actually pretty excited about that part. 5 1 Quote Link to comment

I understand that they are considered old technology, but man the color is very crisp; shame that they are being phased out. I'm using an Aquatic Life 14K HID bulb. I picked up a few other brands including an Elos Spectra Chrome which I'm excited to try out when this current bulb bites the dust. Quote Link to comment
Airedale.Reef
Very appealing aquascape too! I love that you paired a bowfront and halides together! Classic! 1 1 Quote Link to comment
Kev1n
The scape is going to look great when populated with coral. 1 Quote Link to comment

The Rainy Day Aquarium
I really want to take this tank slow, but there has always been an undertone of urgency since the Mrs. and I are to be moving most likely late this fall (don't even get me started on prices for homes let alone apartments). I might toy with the idea of putting one or two soft corals from my UNS 30A into this tank to get things going; not sure if it's ready yet though. All of this to say I don't want to get too invested into this tank yet as I will have to be moving it soon-ish. I do need to get new airline tubing as the tubing that I have going to my breeder box keeps coming off of the air pump (it's pretty cheap stuff). Other than that I'm really happy with how things are tuning out. I'm pretty set on having this still be a SPS dominant reef, trying to keep it classic, and toying with the idea of just a pair of clowns. I'm pretty wishy-washy on fish still, though. I did think it would be awesome to have a carpet anemone and a pair of clarkii clownfish, but this tank is just too small for that, maybe in a future build. In other news I was with the Mrs. checking out some yard sales and we saw an old oak trim marineland 30 gallon tank with a "Free" sign taped to it on a curb. I about put the Mrs.' Jeep up on two wheels turning around to go grab it haha. The previous owners were nice enough to clean the tank out pretty good before leaving it on their curb. I'm not sure if it holds water so I'll have to see when I have a bit more time to mess with it, but I didn't see any scratches or cracks so fingers crossed it's good. It's 36"Lx13"Wx18"D so a decent sized tank. I was thinking of making a nice oak stand and canopy for it later this summer. Maybe even do a small video series with it. Anyways just another project to get done I guess. 4 Quote Link to comment

Whats going in there? Thanks! Yes it's powered by an air pump. It's similar to how an under gravel filter works, although it dumps water into the hob chamber and then flows back out into the main tank if that makes sense. It's a very gentle flow and has no moving parts so it's perfect for copepods and other little critters to hang out in. I was thinking about a small macro algae scape and maybe some fun, smaller soft corals like mushrooms. I was looking at some smaller ornamental shrimp too, like a Pederson or bumblebee shrimp, it's not very big so I can't put too much in there, but we'll see. 2 Quote Link to comment

Kev1n
I normally try to hide as much gear as I can. But this looks neat with everything visible. I have to confess, I quite like it. Quote Link to comment
