925 contest tank "Why Be Normal"

I think that wood is going to be a non-stop source of tannins and ph problems. You might consider sealing it or replacing it with some wood that have been in the ocean for a while.

Adding some crushed coral someplace might help stabilize ph but I am not sure how much you'll need to add.

You and Chris's fishes are right.  The idea was to juxtapose fw decor with reef animals, but the ph will always be a problem.  I'll have to modify the tank.  Not sure what I want to do, use the wood and change out the sand and rock, or just take out the wood.

Went to Robinson Preseve in Manatee County  today.  Beautiful views of Tampa Bay and the Skyway Bridge.

And finally, a bunch of this stuff (tunicates?) too.

Yes, you should take out the wood and change the sand and rock to have a better PH.

To keep your fw decor theme you could :

  • May be just have the tip of the wood in the tank (this may give you the option of having moss/plants growing on the wood).

  • Try a pond aquascape with Halophyte plants.

  • Or just a rock aquascape but with aragonite rock.

Well, I've decided to take this tank down.  It would be a 100% changed tank in order to correct the PH, and I don't have a plan in mind for it.  The feature of the tank was to be the way the fw decor and the reef fauna clash/complement each other.

If all goes well, I'll have an entertainment center built before summer that can house up to 4 nano tanks.  There may be some used Nuvo 10's or other aio 5-10 g tanks for sale at the lfs, or I may get a pair from microreefs if he builds some more.

This tank will become a fw shrimp/nano fish pond tank eventually.  It has great dimensions.

Thanks to those who followed, I'll be following the contest as it draws to a close!

Sorry to hear that; but remember that you have already qualified, and there are no requirements to keep it wet.  If you decide to start it up again before the contest concludes, we can still include you in the voting.

That last one reminds me of a pelagic tunicate colony but could also be a form of pyrosome colony that washed in both are sea drifters but it looks like theres some sea grass or something stuck through it so it may have been anchored somehow. Because of looking like it may have been atached I'm leaning toward it being some kind of eggs. Realy neat find. I wonder if anyone can tell us exactly what it is. I love good mystery beach finds.
