Intro:

Hey guys, Luxembourg here. I am a longtime lurker and decided to make an account, and make an aquarium journal. I ended up getting a Fluval 13.5. This is my second reef/SW tank, After a yearlong hiatus I decided to startup another tank. I will (hopefully) update you guys on the status of my tank.

Current setup (03/16/18):

  • Tank: Fluval Evo 13.5
  • Rock and Sand: CaribSea Base Rock (Dry Rock) and CaribSea Arag-Alive "Fiji-Pink"
  • Heater: Cobalt Neo-Therm 75w
  • Lighting:
    • Stock Fluval Evo 13.5 LEDs (I may upgrade, they seem sufficient for now)
    • Cheap LED light for chaeto
  • Filtration:
    • First Chamber inTank Media filter. Chaeto, then filter floss in the top slot. Purigen and more filter floss in the second slot. In the bottom I have ChemiPure Elite and a little more filter floss to top (bottom?) it off.

Welcome to the community @Luxembourg, glad you joined us! You're right on track with your tank temperature I'd say, nothing to worry about.

I like your plans, though your invertebrates list might be a little heavy, unless you plan on feeding everyone. That might make for a higher bio-load for a tank this size. I'd consider skipping the hermit crabs and urchin, especially because they like to cause chaos and knock things over. Fewer snails as well, I'd imagine. Everything else should be able to handle the 'clean up crew' duties more than enough, and they'll still be hungry ;)

are you planning on keeping the chaeto in the third chamber? If so, aren't you worried of it getting sucked up into your return pump and gunking it up?

I haven't really thought about that. I just purchased the inTank Media filter for the Evo 13.5, so I'll change my setup. Thanks for pointing this out.

How are the cleaner shrimp and blood red fire shrimp getting along so far?

Couldn't be better! The Fire Shrimp just lurks under the rock (you can see in the most recent FTS), only coming out occasionally. And the SSCS is all over the tank, but hangs out next to the Fire Shrimp. @Christopher Marks

04/08/18 Water Parameters:

  • Ammonia: 0.0ppm
  • Nitrite: 0.0ppm
  • Nitrate: 0.0ppm

I'm going to buy some premade saltwater to try to help correct the pH and Specific Gravity (likely due to 24 hour power outage, luckily no livestock losses). Big updates coming soon!
