  1. Got a Fluval Evo 13.5 for $100USD when it’s on sale. Immediately upgrade most of the equipments since I will be keeping corals in the near future. I had a 65G SPS reef tank for 5+ years before and call it quits last year since I don’t have time anymore and the tank was neglected. I got the itch again and decided to get back in with a nano reef since it’s smaller and doesn’t take long for maintenance. This time around I’m automating as much of the tank as possible to prevent making it feel like a chore. Equipments: - Hipargero LED 60W on a mechanical timer. (Soon to pick up a AI Hydra HD this sunday) - Stock return pump, although I have a cobalt maxi jet 1200 that I could use but for now the stock pump is sufficient. - Aqamai KPS (Picking up a Vortex Mp10wQD this Sunday) - Intank chamber 1 media basket - 100 watts cobalt heater - Eheim automatic fish feeder - Autoaqua nano ATO - Dry rock with some live rock rubbles - 20lbs live sand Tank has been up for 2 weeks. Live stocks includes 2 oscellaris clownfish, 2 blue legged hermit crabs, a few pulsing xenia (eventually have to pull them because these will grow like weeds but I like the pulsing action). Will add more fish/ corals as tank matures.
  2. Hey y’all. I’m one of those people that has flitted off and on the forums over the years. I’ve also been in and out of the hobby. I’ve had freshwater off and on for about 15 years. I had a saltwater Fowler tank for a few years in high school but gave that up when I went to college. I’ve wanted to get a sw for years but I’ve been pretty unstable as far as taking temp jobs all over the country, living abroad and traveling tons. But now I’m kinda settled down a bit and decided it was finally time to jump back in! Back when I had my sw I tried my hand at a couple easy corals but they never did all that well. They kind of existed but never thrived. I suspect I was just too immature to understand how to truly care for em. Anywho I’ve been planning this comeback for a while and today I drove on over to my LFS and picked up my fluval 13.5 evo. I decided I really like the look of the tank, the price was right for what I was looking for and it’s not too big- but not too small. I’m super psyched to get the ball rolling. My intentions at the moment are to keep the stock lighting (kind of the point of getting an all-in-one system right? Haha) and I plan to mod some extra blue leds on in there (I saw a journal where someone did that here). I plan to pick up some eggcrate and also mod the filtration as it seems most everyone on her does. I’m not suuuuper diy minded but I love doing it (I just kinda suck at it, so we’ll see). Ive picked up all my extras as far as test kit and sand and even about 11lbs of rock from the lfs. I plan to get it thrown together tonight and to get that cycle started. I do still need to go get the eggcrate and some media for it. My plans inhabitant wise are still pretty up in the air. In the past I had a clown (honestly it’s been 10+ years and I don’t remember exactly which as far as percula or which). I had a sixline wrasse that I LOVED but unfortunately lost to a surfing accident. I had two cardinals and a bicolor blenny (ended up being the most active and interesting fish in the whole tank). - this time around I’d love to try some different things but my heart still tugs at the clown (why do we all love them so much). And I’ve been thinking perhaps a different species of blenny. But who knows. As as far as corals I want to start off real easy, so I’m thinking some zoas and maybe a hammer. I once saw a tank that had green star spread across the back wall and I loooved how that looked. Soo. We’ll see where I end up. Sorry now im completely rambling. In any case, I’ll document my journey here. And I consider myself an experienced newbie... any and all input is always welcome. I love to learn and grow and won’t be annoyed by friendly advice!

    Alkalinity and calcium

Hello, I'm struggling to understand the relationship between alkalinity and calcium levels in my tank. I’ve read a ton about it but I’m still confused. I have a high level of calcium (500) and low alkalinity (7) I’m not sure how to address this. I have B-Ionic calcium buffer system with component 1 alkalinity and component 2 calcium but I’ve never used it. Can someone help me out? Specifically can you tell me what you would do in my situation. I have a 13.5 gallon fluval evo tank. I also have a protein skimmer attached For coral I have some mushrooms and Xenia, a pink birds nest coral, zoas, and some leather corals. Additionally I have a coco worm (hard tube feather duster), a clownfish, 2 cardinalfish, and one tiny goby.
  4. So I was very happy with my @World Wide Corals live sale purchases I decided to join the coral club over the weekend. This was my Father’s Day gift from my dog😝. My first package arrived today😁😁. I have the corals acclimating and can’t wait to get them in the tank hehehehehehe.

    Fluval Evo 13.5 Owners Thread

I do not know if there is a definitive thread for all Fluval Evo 13.5 owners but if there is not, I am starting this one! The thread will ultimately serve as a learning resource for any and all reefers who own this particular AIO. Feel free to post any photographs, advice, do's, and most importantly do not's of your tanks. I look forward to making this a friendly and helpful resource for all Fluval Evo 13.5 owners. If there already are threads trying to accomplish this, please link this thread to them so that it can be consolidated to avoid redundancy. Redundancy is so annoying. I really hope you guys run with this!!
  6. Background: This is an upgrade from my Fluval Spec V. I have always struggled with the rock being too big in the Fluval Spec V. It makes it very hard to clean the glass on each side so lots of algae build up. I also wanted to get a bigger tnak for the clown fish. This clown fish has been with me for over 2 years now and survived through 2 leaks, 1 move, and other mishaps. It is also a total bully so I can't put it into my Red Sea Reefer 350. When I first saw ReefBuilder feature the Fluval Evo 12, I knew it will be my next tank. The dimension fits perfectly wherethe Spec V is now and the rock will look great with more space on each side. There are some questionable design choices with the tank such as the black honeycomb at the top of the tank (which I razored off) and the AIO chamber allows a lot of detritus to build up in the first and second chamber. The stock lighting and pump are good only for softies and low light LPS. But overall, the tank itself is pretty decent for the price. I do like it comes with surface skimmer and the return nozzle is already split into two. In additional, the raised design is very modern. My vision for this tank is a very natural tank with gorgonians, LPS, zoas, acans, and ricordeas. I will get another fish or two, something that can put up with the clown.

    💦 Ev's Evo 13.5 🐠

Hi! So - back in 2015 I had a 45g tank but being in high school it ended up being way too much for me and I broke it down before I left for college. Fast forward to a few weeks ago - I somehow end up back on this forum and before I know it I have a new Evo at my door, Amazon Prime is a blessing and a curse. As I learned with my last go at this - I suck at tank maintenance AND keeping a journal, hopefully gonna stick with posting this time and in turn it will keep me from slackin on my tank, we'll see 😛 So here goes 🙂 6/26/19 - Day 0! - Cloudy! - Dosed Dr. Tims One & Only and ammonium chloride to 3ppm. 6/29/19 - Day 3 - Water finally starting to clear up. - Ammonia reading 1.5ppm

  12. Got a few pics of my tank running the hydra26 and also glued my new WWC frags on the rocks.
  13. To those of you who have a MAME design skimmer, could you post a picture of how you have it set up? Specifically, how deep into the water do you place it and how high up do you have the bubbles go? I know it is working for me since I have green water that comes out, but sometimes it works awesomely (like very dark green water) and other times it doesn’t work as well. Im under the impression that I need an ATO to get the best use out of it, but until I get one, could you guys share with me the ideal placement for it? Additionally, do you find it to be super wobbly? I’m not sure if there’s a better way to set it up, since the instructions were all in Japanese.
  14. This live sale was brutal and things sold in seconds...... I did manage to get 3 frags but the $5 ones disappeared super quick. Hopefully these corals will do good in my evo, I already have a birdsnest that’s doing good.
  15. Anyone have suggestions on hydra 26 settings over a fluval evo 13.5

    Isaac's Peninsula Reef

  17. Need some options on of this looks safe mounted on my glass. I ended up buying a hydra26 today because apparently prime hd’s are sold out and aquaillumination is not shipping any to stores..... maybe they are working on upgrading the primes??? Well I ended up getting the hydra knowing it’s a bit much but hey I will be getting a new tank this year and it will carry over. My concern is if this mount is safely installed on the glass, it’s a heavy light and the gooseneck is also heavy. I just don’t know if it could break the glass from to much stress or if I’m just over worrying. Hope some one can chime in.
  18. Picked up 2 new acans and 1 micromussa over the weekend plus a Hanna ph checker
  19. Silly question but does anyone know if flowerpot corals can be placed next to each other or will one sting the other. I picked up a new frag last weekend and it’s a different color then my current one.
  20. Saw this thing in my tank today, does anyone know what it is and should I be concerned...... also found a couple of aptasias on my sand bed😵🤬

    Acan question

Just picked up an acan frag on Friday and was wondering if a tailspin blenny and citrinis clown goby are same from it. I saw a couple of post about acans eating fish so it made me a bit concerned.

    What tank should I choose?

Hey everyone, I'm looking at getting my first tank but am a bit indecisive. I'm trying to decide between a Waterbox 20 Cube, Innovative Marine 20 Nuvo Fusion, and a Fluval 13.5 Evo. What would you choose and why? As for lighting, I'm going to get the AI prime. Thanks!
  23. Went to the LFS and saw this flower pot coral, it was only $14.99 so thought I would give it a try i guess my citrinis clown goby likes it lol

    Duncan

My Duncan is getting larger but one of the heads isn’t growing as much and is not even open in this picture.
  25. So I have had my evo since they first came out back in the middle of 2016 and recently I noticed some of my lights went out. Contacted fluval and they sent me a new light under warranty. It appears to be slightly different and the led’s seem to be better protected...... problem was that the freaking new light wouldn’t even turn on 😒. Fluval is sending me another one that should arrive today so hopefully that one actually works. But wanted to share some pics of the new light. The old one is on the right, new one on the left. Also the connectors are better and have a tighter fit
