History (original first post):

The idea for this tank came about after my 4g pico tank crashed. Instead of rebooting the 4g tank, I decided to turn it into a frag tank and go a little bit bigger. Like, about ten times bigger :happydance:

I'm going to move my IM Fusion 10g tank to the desk in the study where my old 4g tank was, and install this new tank in place of the IM10. It will go on top of the counter on a built in bookcase in the family room, so it needs to look nice and run quietly.

The space available for the tank is 23 7/8" wide, 21 1/2" deep, and 25" high. Here's what it looks like with the IM10:

26653082623_cb24ebce03_b.jpg2016-05-26 IM Fusion 10 In Room FTS by TeenyReef, on Flickr

I've considered several tank options:

- IM Fusion Mini 40. I think this one is meant to be, because it's built to almost the exact dimensions of the space I have available and gives me the most tank that will fit.

- IM Lagoon 25. Same footprint but shallower. I like the shallow look but a deeper tank means more water, more stability, and more inhabitants.

- Red Sea Reefer 170. $650 more than the IM40, includes a sump, but also includes a stand that I can't use. And it's smaller.

- Various non-AIO tanks including custom built to fit the space. This would be the "best" solution, but if I'm going to go to the time and expense of building a custom tank with a sump, I think I'd get more for my money with a slightly larger size, and longer/shallower dimensions. Which means I can't put it where it needs to go.

So, I've settled on the IM40.

I've just ordered the IM40, along with a few other items from BRS:

- Tunze 9004 skimmer (pretty much the only decent skimmer that will fit in the AIO chamber)

- MP-40 circulation pump

- Finnex 150w heater

I also ordered a few goodies from StevieT at InTank:

IM CustomCradle magnetic probe holder

IM40 media basket

I already have a few other items on hand:

- Jebao DP-4 doser

- Tunze Osmolator 3155 ATO

- Apex Jr. controller with Energy Bar 8 and Temp/Ph probes.

Up next: lighting? more circulation? filtration? stocking? other considerations?

ooh man, considering your frag tank looks better than my main (and many others) this is gonna be sweeet!!

Thanks! No orgies here, but I did eat a whole box of Girl Scout cookies while I was working late tonight. I also couldn't find any hookers and blow on StevieT's site, so I'm afraid the standards here are really going to be quite low :P

You don't need all that, you've got the touch teeny! When you win your next TOTM we'll talk about the hookers, blow, orgies, and moar cookies for the celebration parties! Of course our wives will then slap us back into reality and we'll have to settle for cookies and congrats, but aint it fun to dream!

I think that the IM40 is a good decision really, seems like you are getting the best of both worlds, instant tank and It fits your space perfectly.

Will you be buying another eb4 or eb8 to run the new tank or will the frag tank be missing out on the apex goodness?

These two posts made me LOL. The question of the day is: WHAT KIND of girl scout cookies, Teeny?

Can't wait teeny i think you will have plenty of flow with the mp40. I also agree with Dave go with the Quad W or get a hybrid. Following along of course love your builds!

I agree you should consider the hybrid! Although my only concern with that would be the heat let off by the T5 bulbs. They do release more heat than the LEDs and with the shelving, this may present some problems since air flow off of the light fixture might be restricted to some degree.

The frag tank gets no Apex love. I'm going to just reuse what's currently in place for the 10g tank.

It's time to start this thread even though I don't have a tank yet, so I can share my planning and ideas.

Good luck with the new tank teeny! IM40 was the best choice! For lighting I would consider using some kind of T5/LED combo for your 24 inch tank. I have seen how T5's help SPS grow faster and with nicer color than just using LED in my 28G tank. I only use the T5's for 3 hours a day BTW. You should look into that!
