[Edit]

This thread got a bit off topic but here is the important part:

1 - I suggested combining the fan and LED power supplies in order to reduce the plugs on a Duo from 3 to 2

2 - Dave was already looking into it but there are technical and financial obstacles that need to be taken into account first

[Original Post]

I just found a second thread from someone getting rid of their Nanobox fixture that cited an excess of cables as one of reasons and that's where I found out that the Nanobox duo needs three power cables to run. The other thread was about the Hybrid and the multiple cables it has but what I was curious about was if there was any way to reduce the number of plugs needed to run the fixture. From my understanding, the Duo needs one for the pucks, one for the bluefish, and one for the fan. I think keeping the bluefish on its own powersupply would be a good idea simply because some people may not want to use that controller but I was wondering about the fan and the LEDs and if there is any way to run the two of them off of the same plug.

Yeah, it seems to me that it wouldn't be too hard to run the fan on a controller too. Then, the fan controller could be powered by the same power supply that powers the drivers.

Something I am trying to finish up. I wish it was as easy as getting a DC/DC but the price of most of those are extremely pricey and hard to get a hold of in smaller than 1000 quantities.

The Hybrid is a different beast due to ballasts instead of drivers. As well if the customer wants to separate T5 plugs, that tacks on the extra cord.

Thanks for your concern/heads up! I do want you to know I am working on it. :)

I have 2 Mini tides hooked up to a single power source, and to limit the number of power cords, I did not mind the fans being on 24/7, so I asked Dave to have Both tides and both fans on a single power source, He delivered! So I only have 2 power cables, for both the tides and another for the bluefish. The fans at 100% don't bother me at all. Actually a little soothing to have the noise in the background.

Yea, that's why I didn't really talk about the hybrid much since it does have so much going on. I think the one that hopefully you can get rid of is the power cable for the fan. I can't really comment on the technical stuff but figured I would throw out the idea but clearly you're already taking that step, haha.

The fan on them should be completely silent when running. If they aren't then time for a new fan to be used in them. Can't hear the fans at all on my Radions or AI lights. Only reason I know they are on is because I can see them spinning.

Those fans are probably not being ran at their max speed though. Mine are since I do not have them on a controller, I wanted them to go ahead and run all the time.

there are small voltage step downs on amazon from 8-20bucks that could be added

And that's another $8-20 to add to the price and to have to mark up to make profit. AC/DC adapters are dirt cheap. Cheap cheap cheap. Hard to beat, that's why Dave has been in consideration for this for a long time now.

I would rather pay a little bit more to have the convenience of one power cord instead of 3 though.

You might, but a lot of people would not like a $20 increase. It also doesn't have the same ring to it, $300 vs $320 :P

At 100% on all channels I sure hope they are running at full speed. haha

It won't get rid of the cables but if you look at my threads most recent picture (with the dog in it lol) you can get a cable wrap to clean it up and essentially make it look like one wire for cheap :)

If yur a baller you don't care about cords get a rkl lite just for temp and cords for your light and your mobbing. If not then don't cop it straight up.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

I do not own a nano box. My point is as a small business owner myself you have to understand that our pioneers of this country started on small businesses. The homie dave has some fire less fixtures out. he said he was working on cutting the amount of cords out at some point hopefully. If he does not then don't buy his product for "having too many cords". If you are an ocd person who can't have "too many cords", then don't buy what dave has to offer. Simple. If you are a boss maybe spending your extra money on a controller system like a rkl would be a good way to manage your lighting as far as i know, he has 4 cords. my solution is buy an rkl or apex jr and plug all of the cords to it so then you can have the timer for the fans and all that good stuff. I just do not support blasting another american for supporting their own dream and owning their own business . Again my solution for all the plugs ; get a controller system and plug all the cords to that. Or perhaps you can diy yourself with his nano box pucks and you can figure it out. Happy reefing. I am most certainly not trying to sounds like an ass i am just being honest and i know the struggle of having your own buisness is all. Much love.

I want whatever you are on. :D

But seriously. I don't think ANYONE was "bashing" Dave and his products. Just a nice suggestion. The only thing I HATE about my Radion is how big the power supply is. I have an Apex and I still don't want 3-4 plugs to control a light. IMO that is just excessive. I know Dave will figure that out and slim it down to 1 or 2 eventually. I think this thread is a great idea to give people a voice so Dave knows what he is working on isn't for nothing.

That's a problem with all AC-DC supplies that give decent amounts of power. They're all large and relatively unsightly. ;)

Why do you have your light going through the Apex? I just have one battery back up for the lights since the Apex doesn't control any aspect of them.

Oh I know. I still hate it! hahaha But if you ever open up the Radion power supply and look there is a TON of wasted space. I know some space is for cooling but I imagine they could cut it down some and then include a small fan inside and have no issues.

I have my Radions plugged into the Apex. I like being able to kill the power to them completely by either unplugging one cord or using the controller function.

Also I have my Radions controlled by my WXM.

Being your own business isn't the point. It is awesome it can be achieved but you also have to realize a product is a product and constructive review is all it is. If you are selling a product to compete with leading brands that many users on here use and know about you have to be ready to meet expectations. Especially with all the hype the Nano Box has. I personally think the website should inform on the product that it comes with 3 cords and is only 2ch dimmable because I had no idea. Even after reading other peoples forms.

All good. Nanobox has too many wires for me. Have you seen my stand?! haha. Wouldn't ever fit.

The problem with making a fixture smaller and relying on fan cooling is that the fans will be the first thing to fail - they almost always are. Shortly thereafter the electronics would fail from heat stress.
