lkoechle
Ugh! So done with gobies! So, we had gotten a new watchman and sold the other to aquatic arts because Blue Zoo had sent us a new watchman. This watchman was such a spazz! It would never NEVER be on the sand bed. Got into my sump 8 times and I cannot figure out how. Finally, at about 9 am yesterday, he finds a cave he likes. Two hours later, he's dead. I don't know how, or why, There was no signs of disease but he had some bites on him. However, there was a snail/hermit mosh pit on him. So I don't think the bite marks are death related. My vote is for exhaustion because he literally swam in the current from the moment he was in the tank until 2 hours before death.I tried everything. Dimming lights, turning of pumps, nothing NOTHINg would get this guy to settle. ARGH! So done with gobies! I wish we had kept my other one But now Husband doesn't want a goby because apparently this neurotic behavior is somewhat normal. I still want some kind of bottom dwelling fish though with unique behaviors On the bright side: Usagi is eating with a gusto. I took a video of her chowing down on some seaweed and you can tell how small she is by how big the small veggie clip is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr7xxfZ9Rwc Link to comment

lkoechle
yo dawg, i heard you like private videos lol sorry. I thought as long as I was the one sharing URLs it'd go through, guess not. All fixed! I'm hoping once she gets a little larger and eating some good foods, her bars will come in darker like yours did. Such a bad ass little fish! and she eats like a beast. She ate a strip the size of her whole body yesterday. Do you think she looks skinny? I'm assuming she's not suppose to be so gaunt looking, or is that a baby thing? Either way, I'm sure she'll fatten up soon enough at the rate she's eating. Link to comment

lkoechle
Sorry to hear about the goby. Thanks, the whole ordeal was pretty frustrating. Learned something: Flatworm Exit does weird stuff to snails. Now, a lot of the forums said it could be flatworm toxins, except I did not have a huge flatworm problem. Therefore, I think it was flatworm Exit itself. Almost all of my cerith snails started distending out of their shells about 3 hours after treatment. They stayed like that all day yesterday. Towards yesterday afternoon, some started moving and behaving normally again. And today, they've all dispersed. A couple I know didn't make it due to cleaned out shells. But I think most did. The weird thing was is the tiger pistol shrimp is totally cool and chill, maybe shrimp aren't as sensitive as people make them out to be. Luckily, Maximus, my florida fighting conch, was totally normal though the whole thing. When I saw the ceriths freaking out, I was worried something would happen to him as well. But at least the flatworms are gone. Also, husband and I are debating the next fish. I've decided I want a One Spot Foxface. They can get along with other rabbitfish. Only downside is when both Usagi and the foxface are fullgrown adults, they may start fighting. My tank size is on the small side for having two so it will really be dependent on their personalities. In that case, the Foxface will be the one getting a new home. The plus side is I plan on getting 1.5 to 2 inch juvie like the scribbled so I won't have to worry about the tank being too small for a few years. And by that time, I may have already upgraded to a 120, giving them both plenty of adult swimming room. What we're really debating is getting a Flame Angel now, or later. He's concerned about aggression issues towards my dragonets I plan on getting later, I'm not concerned though because the dragonets have different behaviors than a Flame. I would be more concerned if we were planning on more open swimming fish later (which we are planning on a peaceful wrasse, we're debating on the McCoskers, the Red-Line, or the Solare). That is my primary concern. The reason we're wanting to add 2+ fish at a time is to make shipping worth it. I also mentioned a flametail blenny or ordering all three at the same time and using the 20 long for qt instead of the 10. The largest fish of the foxface/flame/wrasse trio would be 3.5 (if we ordered the solare, but I don't think husband likes him) and the other two would be at max 2 inches. I like baby fish, can you tell? They're also a heck of a lot cheaper and I'll have them a heck of a lot longer. lol Opinions on what should be ordered with the foxface? jedimasterben
I would highly recommend to purchase another doliatus instead of another species. Even if they are not opposite sexes, they should still pair up - in the wild, S. doliatus live in hetersexual or homosexual pairs as adults. Link to comment
lkoechle
Picking up some zoas tomorrow: 9 polyps of Blue Hornets, 7 polyps of WOW, 5 God of Wars, 4 Candy Apple Reds, and 7 Strawberry Lemonade And picking up these guys later this week/next week or tomorrow, not sure how long we want to let them heal yet: Rastas, Red Hornets, Watermelons (both green skirt and yellow skirt varieties), Pink Zippers, and another that I can't remember lol. I'm not sure of the polyp count on this pack since we essentially told the guy which ones we wanted frags of and he fragged them the next day. But I think this is an awesome start to the zoa garden! jedimasterben
Let them heal as long as possible, especially if they are small frags. Link to comment
lkoechle
How long do you think that should be? I think they were fragged sunday Link to comment
jedimasterben
You'd probably be ok getting those with the rest of the stuff you're picking up. Link to comment
Jay Wee
Wow this is an amazing setup. Can't wait to see this thing fully stocked. Love the dimensions of the tank. And the stain on that stand is nice. Link to comment

But we are both pretty excited for this thing which is tremendous help to me in not sticking to the budget. Link to comment
latteslave
I like the flasher wrasse option. Link to comment
lkoechle
I like the flasher wrasse option. I do too, especially because they are small, I can probably get a couple females for the male. But husband really likes the red-line, and its a pretty wrasse too. Coral Update: Second batch of corals are acclimating right now, photos will come out later. But I made out like a bandit. We went to pick up the frag pack (with the blue hornets and all that) at a reef club meeting, and there was an impromptu raffle for corals so on top of what I paid for, I also got some Bam Bams and Goblin Fire. When we went to pick up the other set of corals today, I also got a small colony of Wolverine zoas as well as a free frag of red monti and an orange ric. So I'm very happy and cannot wait for everyone to open up! Not going to lie, I love where I live and the local club because everyone seems to be insanely generous with their stuff. We have Don't Break The Chain meets where the goal is to swap frags or give frags with the intent that the recipient will eventually grow out, frag and then give that frag back into the DBTC program. I'm really hoping this stuff will grow out enough before the next DBTC swap which I think will be in November. I do really want to give back since my pico contained a few DBTC swaps and I wasn't able to give back because the tank crashed. So hopefully, I'll be able to make up for it with this tank. lkoechle
Photos! The male getting slapped around. lol! (she wasn't really, its just how the photo looks. lol) Usagi flaring up a little bit. She's put on a good amount of weight in the week and a half I've had her. I'm very pleased with that. Usagi's night/fright colors CORAL: The colors look better in person. I need to get a blue flash for the camera. Blue hornets WOWs Candy Apple Reds Bam Bams, a freebie (next to the unimpressive, but also free, Goblin Fire so no complaints lol I like variety, even if they're less then stellar) Wolverines, another freebie Watermelons, green skirt (didn't take a photo of the yellow skirt, but I'm sure you can imagine them lol) Miami Vice Pink Zippers Red Hornets (next to the Rastas which I also forgot to photograph) God of War Orange Ric Red Monti Cap. It looks way better in person. Anyways, I'm pretty chuffed at everything! I think I've got an awesome start to the zoa garden! Link to comment
latteslave
Nice zoas. You probably already know, but I would move the cap off the sand bad and up on the rock. Should get a bright orange and then the scrolling... Link to comment

lkoechle
Did some aquascaping and added Usagi to the main tank. She looked healthy and is fat, but I think she was feeling stressed by the 10g so we decided to move her. She seems much happier and is out more instead of hiding like the 10g. And of course, she's still eating like a pig. Added a new arch, I think it makes the scape look much more complete: Usagi flaring this morning. The LEDs really wash her out on the camera, I have to find new settings... Camo fish! Edit: Just adding better photos of Usagi. In case you can't tell, I really love this fish. lol Link to comment
lkoechle
My new monti has a white spot on it. It showed up about two days ago. It's on a plate beneath its shelf. All of my parameters are good. My Alk was a little high due to me accidentally overdosing but it's at an acceptable level today. I think it might because of the alk, or the first few days of rough treatment (sandbed, moving it around the tank, finally being able to glue it down) plus adjusting to the tank. I read online that they tend to be forgiving and hardy, so I hope he makes it. The spot does not seem to be growing larger, so at least the problem seems to have been stopper. But whether thats due to the alk being corrected or finally being left alone, I don't know. Link to comment
lkoechle
Husband got me a Valentine's Day gift! A solar fairy wrasse! And the weirdest thing happened. Right after adding him to the tank, Usagi (the rabbitfish), was stuck to him like glue. Not threatening or chasing or anything. They have been together the entire afternoon. They follow each other all over the tank and share the same hidey hole when startled. The coolest thing is this: when I went to feed some soaked pellets, the wrasse ate them right up. Usagi didn't, and I'm not surprised because she always ignores pellets. But then the wrasse started picking some pellets up off the sand bed and Usagi watched him. Then she came over and started eating the pellets off the sandbed with him! Now, I don't think the friendship itself is entirely unique, but the speed at which it was established was astonishing. It was love at first sight. I also got some fire and ice zoas and a hammer coral for my husband's valentine's day gift, but I didn't take any photos. PICTURES! C. solorensis AKA Helo In the following photos, Usagi is flaring at me, not Helo. She also flares at the clowns if the come too close to Helo. How weird is that? And as you can see, Usagi's second black bar has come in! It seems to fade though, so I think its a direct response to social stimuli. Link to comment

lkoechle
Husband picked up an Acan Lord colony that was put up for "adoption" on our local reef club. The guy upgraded tanks from a 40 to a 65 and didn't want to go through the hassel of target feeding in a deeper tank. Only to find out that the acan really loved being target fed and lots of light. So 20 heads shrunk to 6 and he decided he needed to give them to someone who would target feed. That someone I decided would be me. So here are pics of my TLC project about 10 minutes after being in the tank. They are starting to fluff up already and hopefully will be happy enough to eat tomorrow evening. Link to comment
