i dont have much pods in my tank at all. i used to in the beginning...

That's funny....do you have something eating them?

Damn man... Looks like a Doser might be in your foreseen future.. That sucks. I'm sorry to hear about your sps. If you need any let me know though,I've got a few pieces you can get for dirt cheap when things get more stable.

In other news,at least you get a assload of Zoa's for cheap tomorrow :D

I'm pretty sure the storm is over. It's a shame I lost the golden tenuis, but I'm just trying to move on and forget. I am happy to say, though, that you hooked me up with some nice zoas! They have all opened up and 9 frags for $40....I'm not complaining. Thanks Steven.

Here are some pics of the zoas I got from ReefKid, along with some other random stuff.

Got the skimmer all cleaned up and back in. I'm giving this one more shot, and if I can't get it to perform well, I might upgrade to the JNS WS-1. I added a valve to the air intake to see if I can fine tune it that way, so we'll see if that helps.

I need some help and advice. The right side is starting to fill in well. I think it will be pretty close to done once I place all the zoas. The only thing I am unsure of is what to do with the very top. I am thinking of putting a cyphastrea on the bottom side of the very top(red arrow), but don't know what to put on top(blue arrow). Maybe a monti....Give me some suggestions.

My Mag was at 1550 as of Saturday afternoon. I had ran out of Tech M after the last dose Friday night. I was planning on going out Saturday and getting more but I called around and no one had it in stock. I have more coming today from Amazon, but I am guessing it hasn't dropped much from 1550. The weird thing is the bryopsis still looks unaffected. I guess I will make a push for 1600 and see what happens. Luckily, I still don't see any negative effects of having it up that high either.

Yeah, thanks again man. My wife was pretty happy when she got home and saw all the zoas, too. That rainbow you got is sick looking.

That's crazy,have you tried any manual removal to see if it comes back ? Or tried taking peroxide and squirting it on the spots once it's removed. I know I've mentioned that a couple of times lol.

Awesome man,I'm gla you guys liked them. I trie to hook it up for ya. Shaun at LR gave it to me for cheap,they have like 15-20 of those. So I picked the biggest one lol.

PS. love those rics

I had this skimmer for a little (bought it used) and absolutely hated it. My AquaticLife Mini Skimmer performed better honestly. I heard the Elite version was better. Maybe look into the Skimz that BRS carries ? I cheaper I think like $120 and you get $10 off with their promo of their new site. I've heard nothing but good things about the Slimz line of skimmers.

You had the JNS WS1 and didn't like it? Are you sure? I have heard nothing but amazing things about it. It looked like this?

Great addition man. I'm hoping to add some sps here from a guy over by Waterford next week. I had a skimz skimmer 4 years ago when you could only order from aquacave(pita for any parts). But I absolutely loved that thing. It was really good and pulled some nasty stuff out.

The Skimz SH1 wont work for me because it need the water height to be up to the base of the collection cup. I would have to fill my back chambers completely, and that just isn't going to happen. Right now, I have the skimmer chamber at 6 inches. The JNS calls for 8-9 inches. I think I can add a piece of acrylic to where the baffle is now to increase the water height to 8-9 inches and the JNS should outperform anything else on the market, from what I have read and been told.

Thanks, Matty. Yeah, they seem to get pretty good reviews, it is just the recommended water level that throws it off for me. If your gonna be out near Waterford, make sure you swing by Living Reef.

No no,I was talking about the CadLights skimmer. I hated it. I'm to poor for a JNS lol. Oh okay,yeah that could cause some problems there.

Did some testing last night. Honestly, I'm confused on what is going on. I've got my calcium stable at 420, so that is good. My Alk seems to have gone up slightly more, which is weird as I have not dosed or even done a WC. It was 9.8 a week ago, and now is up to 10.2??? Could this have to do with the mag dosing? As for the mag, it is now officially off the chart at 1600+. Unfortunately, the bryopsis has not been effected yet. 2 nights ago, I pulled as much of it as I could, and then directly sprayed Tech M all over the roots when I was doing the dose. Last night, it already looked like it was starting to grow back. I'm starting to think I may need to look into other alternatives.....

Nitrate: 2-3 ppm

Phosphate: 0.07

Calcium: 420

Alk: 10-10.2 dKh

Mag: 1600+(it was off the chart)

Luckily, all the coral looks healthy and happy. Here are some more random shots to keep my mind at ease and you all interested....

Looks like the same bryopsis I got. I've had success at minimizing it with keeping my phosphates at 0 although I know many people say this doesn't effect it (my magnesium tests around 1400). I happened to notice when I used carbon last week it started to turn green again but now that I've removed the carbon its turning grey again maybe just a coincidence but I'm feeling the carbon was adding phosphates into the water that the bryopsis could use.

Actually, I think I know exactly what my problem is. I have been reading a little bit today about the Tech M method. What I did not know until today, is that there is a chance that carbon will absorb the trace element in Tech M that is responsible for eradicating the bryopsis. That would explain why I still have bryopsis even though my mag is up above 1600. Needless to say, the carbon is coming out when I get home. I may have to let the mag drop a little and then dose again before I see any progress, but its worth a shot.

As for my phosphates being at 0.07, I need to do something about that. I really want them down closer to 0.02 or lower. Time for a water change. The skimmer is going again and that should help a bit, but it is still not getting the dark skimmate that I want. I'm getting close to ordering that JNS....

Yeah I was never impressed with my CAD skimmer. It always produced micro bubbles and the skim was never consistent. My red sea airlift is 100x better and was only $40. I think once you remove the carbon you will see better results.

Link to comment

I'm no long having a problem with micro bubbles and I believe the microbubbles I saw in the beginning was due to a combination of improper setup and running it while the tank was so brand new. I can get the skimmer to stay consistent now, after adding the valve onto the air intake.(it helps to fine tune the adjustment) It just doesn't want to pull a dry, dark skimmate. The best I can get it to do is a green tea looking liquid, and that is just not good enough for me. I only have 2 fish atm, with plans to add 4 more. I need more horsepower...

Hopefully taking the carbon out will solve the problem. I'll switch ya phosphates. Lol I bought a Hanna checker off a guy in Orlando Saturday and tested on Sunday and it was up around 0.29 Yikes. Luckily I'm taking the sand out of the tank and did a 5g wc and it dropped down to 0.16. Still have a ways to go.

It could be the high levels of mag. I wouldn't doubt it.

Tank is looking good as hell though man,need to get those rocks filled up :P:lol:

We shall see. I took it out when I got home from work last night. I ended up deciding to continue dosing about 60ml per night for now as well. I read yesterday some people actually had to dose all the way up to 1800 before seeing any results. Wish me luck.

Yikes, those are high phosphates. Not to rub it in, but I think mine may have been a false reading. I tested it again last night and was back to 0.00.

Silly little snails!! :happy:

It was quite funny. Not sure what caused it to all of a sudden do that, but it was a fun little photo shoot.

Great fts!

Thank you! It will look a lot better once I place all the frags.

Thank dude. I know, I really need to fill it up, but I think I may be taking a break on coral for a little while. I have a big trip to Las Vegas for my cousin's wedding in the beginning of April. I'm going to be gone for 5 days so I don't really want to add anything else right now, except for fish. But, before any more fish, I need to get this skimmer figured out.

Which leads me to this fun list of upgrades I think I am going to be doing in the next couple months:

* JNS WS-1 to replace the PLS-50 elite

* InTank basket whenever it is released

* Retro the T5 to replace 2 bulbs with 2 NanoBox 13-ups

* Jebao DP-1 doser whenever it becomes apparent that it is necessary

* Lexan Lid(I have a pretty cool idea for a custom lid that I can't wait to find time to build and show you guys)

* Potentially get a natural looking magnetic frag rack from Gooch on R2R to go on the back wall above the torch

First things first though, I need to sell the Nuvo and NanoBox from the old build...

And the list of fish that I am considering as of right now(this has been on hold while Alex finished renovations to the new store and while I figure out the skimmer):

* Sunburst Anthia

* Target Mandarin

* Springeri Damsel

* Orchid Dottyback

I purchased one of his wrasse dens over Christmas. I love it. His magnetic frag racks are pricey, but I'm sure worth it. When I ever get a big tank, I think it is something I will look into. Jestersix is someone else who makes some magnetic mounts. He just built a bunch of stuff for Darwin's new pico tank.

Wrasse den??

For barebottom tanks that you want to kee a sand sleeping wrasse in. I have one in my frag tank for my Melarnus. Sure, I could use a Tupperware bowl, but this is sexier and can grow coral on it. Here is one of Gooch's pictures:

He seems to make some nice quality stuff. I saw those wrasse dens back around christmas and remember thinking how cool that was. Glad you like yours.

Man I wish I could just get this tank to stablize. The tech m dosing has really cause the alk to swing up....tested it at 10.8 on saturday. Now the blue maricultured colony has a little tn on the base. I did a water change yesterday and it appears to have stoped the tn...keeping my fingers crossed. I am going to hold off on dosing any more tech m for now.

On a good note, I picked up a couple more zoa frags from living reef on friday and got a free frag of meteor shower cyphastrea. Ill try to grab some pics later tonight.

On an even better note, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the JNS WS-1. Not sure when it will be her but I cant wait! And Im working on plans for the sunpower retro, which will include 2 of the new Nanobox 13up boards as well as the new bluefish mini!

Link to comment

One more small update for the weekend.

The blue maricultured piece still has some TN on the base, but it hasn't spread any more, from what I can see. Still have my fingers crossed, but I think the water change buffered the alk level enough to keep it from loosing any more tissue.

Not really sure what I am going to do with the bryopsis. I ended up taking out the chalice and dipping its frag plug in some h2o2, but that doesnt help me with the rockwork. I really am afraid to dose any more tech M at this point, but also am nervous about dosing h2o2, and do not want to remove my rockwork. I think I may let my mag level drop back down to 1300 or so, then try again from the beginning without any carbon in the tank.

My wife and I placed all of the remaining frags last night!! I am very pleased, at least I think. I will know for sure once I can see it with everything actually open. Hopefully it will all be open and happy tonight and I will take some pics.
