Flat black FTW

Flat black is cool, but that would clash way too much with the scheme of the tank. The room the tank is in is all white and light colors. A big flat black light would kill it. The aluminum looks great, but wonder if white would look better.

Who is good with Photoshop?

I say paint it white, couldn't hurt right ? That'll look sexy. For some reason I already though it was white,hmmm..

I almost got a small ass piece of that moti from Top Shelf awhile ago. Travis gave me the price of $20 for a nickel sized piece, than I came in the next day and the taller more quiet guy, gave me the price of $50,hah.

Definitely paint it white bro. And the wire rope it hangs from too if you think you can do it clean enough. And I would say plasti dip would be a must.

Soooo...I didn't finish the retro, but it's mostly prepped. I just have to get with Dave so he tells me how to cut the ati up.

While I'm at it, should I paint it white? If I did it, I would prob plasti dip it white. That way i can peel it off should I ever want to sell it.

Yay of nay??

Plasti dip that bitch white

What's a plasti dip?

It's a rubberized paint coating. Basically you spray it on with a spray can just like regular paint. It's dries and looks like paint. Should you ever want to go back to normal on whatever you paint, it peels right off.

how well does plastidip hold up to heat? I havn't gotten to try it in a really hot location yet.

I've plati dipped whole cars, wheels, you name it. Wheels get scorching hot on a car. All the driving and braking makes them heat up. Never had a problem!! My race car was completely plasti dipped and held up with no problem to the Florida sun.

Its a plastic based spray paint that is durable, yet it peels off in case you want to change to a different color or are not happy with the outcome. I'm pretty sure it is also reef safe! It is very popular in the car world as well. A lot of people like to change the color of their rims/accessories, and with plasti dip you can pretty much do this as many times as you want.

So let me ask you this, I want to paint an american DJ powerstrip to white. Wouldn't krylon work?

Ofcourse. Any regular spray paint would work in that application. Now if you ever wanted to paint something and maybe want to have the option to reverse it, then plastidip works great.

Well I promised myself I wouldn't touch anything for a while. Yea...that didn't happen. Here is how my night went.

Figured out how I wanted to do this and text Dave like 6 million times. I cut some holes on the lower unit with a holesaw. This lets the fan air out into the upper unit where the stock fans blow it all out. I also did it this way because the sunpower blows air over the bulbs. I'm hoping this will also help keep the leds cool.

I also ran the wires out the back with white loom. I hate how sunpowers have the wires up top.

Mother of modification. :0
damm your badass

you have some major balls to do that

looks awesome man

It wasn't too bad. Took me about 3 hours from start to finish. I'm happy to have shimmer again! I also really missed seeing the corals under blue led. Even if its only 2-3 hours a day, it makes all the difference.

i wish you made a video that would have been awesome

for us newbie can learn off of you

front tank shot?

It was my first time retrofitting a ATI also so if I can do it, you can do it!

I suck at videos and stuff like that. I was also working by myself, so it makes it kind of hard.

That's an awesome and huge mod. Can't wait to see that beauty on your tank.

Thanks man! So far I'm very happy I decided to do it. It's a blue led sunrise over the reef today! Lovin it

Nice :)

Did you add any more intake fans to the Sunpower or still just the stock 2/3?

I didn't add anymore fans, but I think with the 4 it has it will be fine. The sunpower has holes that blow over the bulbs and exits trough the left side of the fixture. So I think that also helps. The fixture so far seems to be running at the same temp, maybe 1 or 2 degrees hotter. I'm going to watch it closely today! If i see temps creep, I could always add a couple more fans. I honestly think it will be perfect though.

That's what I worry about with mine, though I'll be adding double the amount of LEDs that you have to a 6-bulb Sunpower, so I think it'll be more of an issue for me. The bulbs are 39w, so two of them put out about 80 watts of heat. The LEDs I'll be putting in will use, at maximum, 302 watts if I run them at the maximum current, or 220 watts if I leave them at 700mA, so I'll be putting in significantly more heat (I won't be running the LEDs all the time at these wattages, either, it will ramp up and down all day and will probably peak around 150-175w).
