Kfmmartin19
I am a heavy feeder. I feed the tank 3 times a day. Once I get home, sometime during dinner time, and before bed. The types of food are random, frozen cyclopleeze, instant ocean gel cyclopleeze, aqua treasure mysis, generic smal frozen mysis, frozen brine, nutramar ova, spectrum a pellets, sera marin granular pellets, reed mariculture (tdo-ep1 and otohime ep2) pellets, reef nutrition live phyto. I crush all the types of pellets into one mix. And I stopped using reef nutrition oyster feast, pretty expensive and have a lot of food to use up. Back on specifics... Sheesh digression... At first the sunburst anthia only ate the small clearer white mysis. Then he progressed to cyclopleeze. For the first few months he spit out pellets, but now is fine. Tried feeding the tank for a week straight with only pellets and he ate. Crushing pellets seems to work well. I noticed the spectrum a pellets are favored by all my fish. The sera marin is disliked. I think it's too hard. They do seem to eat alot, like high metabolism with little girth gain in the belly. I noticed no issues with once a day or every other day, but i am a natural heavy feeder and always got back to 3 times a day. Hope that answers your question. That definitely answered the questions thank u! Ppl always make anthias seem so intimidating! I know they're not ur average clownfish tho haha. Damn I just noticed u have a mandy too! Ur breaking all the rules . U spot feed him or does he just get what he can find? Link to comment

Yes I spot feed cyclopleeze and nutramar ova using a turkey baster with rigid tube connected. Here are some recent camera phone pics. I posted the same pics asking if the mandarin was a male and if he was fat enough. Tummy shots. Lol Link to comment
AMAYEU
look at that fatty. Hey that's the anthias name: Fatty. lol. The mandarins name is Joe. Link to comment
AMAYEU
I think I can get "joe the mandarin" to eat from the feeding tube connected to the turkey baster. He's not afraid and eager to take the prawn eggs. Well, couldn't get a pic but noticed that these two always hang out together. I believe the red head goby is there to steal Joe's food but at the same times trains Joe to get comfortable and accept other foods. Link to comment

AMAYEU
Because we are focusing on joe, here are some pics in her memory. Mandy. Mandy was my second mandarin. Had her on live tigger pod and live brine for two days then refused to eat. I feel spot feeding in a qt tank is not the way to train new mandarins. Btw. High end qt tank. Link to comment

AMAYEU
What do u think is the best way to train new mandarins then?By no means an expert, but would break down the process of training to feed mandarins into some categories then steps. Food / Fish / Tank / Acclimation Food- Research all the live, frozen and dried food ppl feed. Most importantly is the live bc of the time needed to establish, for instance it will take about 2 weeks to get a good reproduction cycle going for reef nutrition tigger pods, a few days for a brine hatchery, and a few days to ship in pods from a vendor. Nano tanks are not the best places for mandarins unless you keep dumping live food into the tank or get the fish to eat frozen or dry. They say the fish need a large tank and its bc the tank can reproduce the live food without the reefer supplementing. Fish- Understand that females and easier than males to train. I think the best advice is to know what a fat and healthy one looks like versus a starving, skinny, and verge of death. Identify healthy fish and wait a week. I typically wait at least a week before buying any fish. I always ask when fish arrived or if they are new in the tank, just ask and remember. I ask the LFS to feed the tank and diligently watch to see if any eat. I would suggest asking to feed the tank with cyclopeeze or prawn eggs (nutramar). I doubt you will see a Mandy snack on some pellets or mysis. Tank- QT vs no QT. From my experience, I would properly acclimate and not isolate the fish in a QT. I did QT and it just did not work. Maybe BC it was a tank without live rock or structure. I thought I could control the environment, and properly feed. I was wrong. I feel they need to roam around naturally in your tank and greatly reduce their stress then baby them with feedings. Acclimation - Do your normal acclimation procedure, bag float and drip line...etc. I tried using the breeder basket method for a few days. (Hanging acyrlic bos with holes). It worked out fine, but the fish was still stressed and was looking to swim freely. I tried feeding everything and nothing. I do not use the diner menthod. I glued a rigid tube to the end of a turkey baster. I turn off the pumps and target feed the area where the fish is. So I suggest, 1) know what you are getting into 2) research 3) find an healthy eating fish, particularly on frozen dried foods 4) try all the foods within your own tank. 5) dedication. AMAYEU
Didn't realize how long this feeder was, but it's almost 2 feet. I used a LFS green rubber band so the rigid tubing would not slide or move when gluing. Link to comment

metrokat
WOW! that is awesome. Congratulations on the babies. The mandarin picture you posted is a pregnant one. I think Danii on here has/had a female mandarin that was twice as huge. There sometimes have impacted eggs which must be uncomfortable. Link to comment

AMAYEU
You're going to try to raise them? Really on the fence... Painful to watch the other fish esp the clown just go to town and eat the babies. Still just a though. I hope rotifiers are not a pain in the a$$ to keep up with. I think it's 30 bucks for a starter kit through reef nutrition. http://reefnutrition.com/specialty_feeds.html I pick this up at the post office today. Autotopoff.com photo below Link to comment
