But then add another $120 in less than a year for bulbs... then another $120 the next, etc.

Dimming on a parabolic schedule should increase the bulb life though, but I'm not sure how much. that's if it's dimmable, anyway.

eh bulbs replacement. that's not an issue. and no i don't have the dimmable model

the dimmable sunpower was $100 more and i didn't see the need. i can just have 2 bulbs turn on early. that's good enough fer meeee

If you ran it on a controller in a parabolic lighting schedule, even if the tank only had SPS in it, should have the exact same growth potential as blasting them with a constantly high amount of light. (As being under the point of photosaturation and photoinhibition is what you want, not meeting or, more than likely, exceeding it, as all excess light is wasted as heat)

Kinda the same concept that some much larger tanks and farms use with their lights on moving rails. Same growth, but more even and more even color, as well. Plus, much cheaper that way since you need less light :)

This is the first I'm posting about this, but I've got two 39w Coral Plus sitting here in front of me that will be added to my tank to fill out the shadows, my new array is too pint-source for my taste. I've got them running on an HEP dimmable ballast (the ones that ATI uses in their fixtures) and will keep tabs on their performance and lifespan undergoing a parabolic light schedule just like the LEDs they will be with.

i'm more of a K.I.S.S. principle kinda guy... hahah

Looking brighter and being brighter are very different things. Do you have access to a PAR meter? Then you could be more sure about it.

nope. :| i'll leave the fixture at 12" for a while if coral start to lighten up, i'll move it up, if they go brown i'll move it down.
