Jorgieee
I have treated my clam two times for pinched mantle disease with tap water for 30 mins in a bucket with a heater, and after the treatment it does very well. After about two weeks or so it starts to act up again any ideas or solutions on what I should do other then this treatment thanks ! Link to comment
metrokat
please post before and after pictures. some clams can show curling matles due to stress or an irritant Link to comment
HarryPotter
In addition, please check the foot of the clam (if it is not attached too much) for nerm snails. They are terrible! Cause unbelievable irritation and can kill the clam. Pinched Mantle is a very confusing problem. Some say it is caused bacterially and will not leave the tank without a 6 month fallow. Others say it's random, stress related. I have been fortunate enough to avoid it, but I wish you the best! Link to comment
Jorgieee
Yeah I have checked the bottom of it every time I have treated it and haven't seen any. Maybe it's pissed off, but I'm not sure what it is. Once I get home I will post a picture of him. Link to comment
ndrobey
Try putting the clam in different parts of the tank to see if it does better in one place as opposed to another. Link to comment
HarryPotter
Maybe its not PM at all, we really need a picture Link to comment
Jorgieee
So today when I treated the clam I looked under it and it looked like it had two stomatella snails under it. Can these things be harmful to it? I would take a picture of it, but my phone's picture quality isn't so great. Link to comment
HarryPotter
Yes. Deadly. No snails for clams. Link to comment
Jorgieee
Ok would putting him on a rock be better? Link to comment
HarryPotter
Can we have a picture? I have a maxima clam. First I was moving it and it was never extended. Then, I put it on a ceramic disk. Now it stays attached to the disk and happy, but I can move the disk at my leisure. PUT IT ON A DISK! STOP TEARING THE BYSSAL THREADS! Link to comment
Jorgieee
I have never tried that seems like a good idea. Nothing will happen to him? I would take a picture, but my phone takes blurry pictures you will Not be able to see it well Link to comment
HarryPotter
Look. Get the clam. Put it on a small 4" ceramic disk. Its called a clam hammock. Reading up, every time I see "Moved" I cringe! Clams need byssal threads to be happy & survive! Please put it on a small, movable rock so that it can firmly attach and get healthy! This may not be a complete "cure", but honestly if the byssal threads are constantly ripped, the clam is MUCH MORE susceptible to infection and irritation. (I apologize if I come off as aggressive- I mean well! You'll do great as soon as the clam gets some byssal!) Link to comment
Jorgieee
Ok awesome and it will attached itself after a while? I'll will put him on a disk and place him on a rock to see how it works out thanks for the help! Link to comment

I'll will put him on a disk and place him on a rock to see how it works out thanks for the help! No problem! Once it makes its attachments, it will become 10x happier and open. Perhaps this (torn byssal) has been the problem all along! Here is my clam on its pedestal- pardon the slight algae outbreak! Link to comment
Jorgieee
Nice !! How long did it take it to attach to the disc? Link to comment
HarryPotter
Nice !! How long did it take it to attach to the disc? Um one day? Just rest it on the disk and leave it alone for two or three days. After that you can move it around without harming it! My dad taught me this (I'm 17) and after researching it, it's really important! Link to comment
smeagol108
Where are you getting these ceramic discs? And are they comletely flat? I thought the true clam hammocks and like a concave indent on them. Very Interested for future clams as your looks like it is doing very well on the disk. I had one that didn't make it and I believe it was due to continually moving it thinking it would be happier without giving time to adjust or attach to anything substantial other than crushed coral pieces. Definitely interested in trying this disc method, so if you could advise where to get them that would be great! Link to comment

I bought a few of the (completely flat) ceramic disk from the LFS for $.49 each- although I think I see them on BRS http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/oceans-wonders-large-coral-frag-disks-15-pack.html True- "Clam Hammocks" have a converse area. HOWEVER- this limits the clams ability to expand as it grows. Yeah, moving a clam constantly WILL give it an infection. Every time the byssal threads are ripped, the flesh of the clam is exposed to both bacteria and harmful invertebrates. Link to comment
Jorgieee
Ok awesome! I was just worried it would move once I placed it on the disk Link to comment
HarryPotter
Ok awesome! I was just worried it would move once I placed it on the disk Nope- if you balance it in the center of the disk, within a few days it will LOCK onto it. Once it is really attached and has a stable base, I believe your clam will begin opening more. As far as pinched mantle, I have been lucky enough to avoid it. Hopefully after your clam gets a bit more stable it can overcome it! Link to comment

HarryPotter
How is you clam? Attached to a piece of ceramic yet? I just bought another- couldn't resist! It was an accident! A local guy has this amazing growout, and I bought it for $15! Awesomeness! Here it is on a 5x5 ceramic tile (I might get a smaller one) Link to comment
