that monster looks straight out of a scene from Star Wars, he looks gentle enough but also looks like if he got pissed he'd take a huge chunk out of something.

Tegus make good pets dude - they aren't like other big monitors that wreak havoc and are dangerous to people. They are gelatinous scavengers that eat snails and other things that don't run.

Who are you to say what anyone can have or not have? There are people that probably think you shouldn't have a reef tank...lolz

ask a Florida game warden why not. Rednecks let them go outside and they go feral in about a week. They are VERY successful breeders and EXTREMELY aggressive and successful hunters.

Where did you learn Tegus aren't aggressive? They are quite possibly the epitome of aggression. I can't speak for the one in the picture because that is admittedly not the type they are having the problem with down there. But in general it is widely known not to approach or try to handle a wild Tegu if you value your fingers and the intact-ness of your epidermis. They are vicious...

I am obviously no one to say whether or not you can have certain animals. If I were, that picture would portray illegal activity lol. And so would any picture of someone with a Burmese Python, Retic. Python, White Lipped Python, Boas of all kinds, etc. They just get too big and people let them go and they eff up our eco systems even more than WE already are. I personally feel a lot of cichlids and other freshwater species should be illegal in this country as well. It's only a matter of time before they (Tegu) start working their way down the gulf coast in the warm months, going after all the Nutrea that are prevalent in the area.

But what do I know?
