Yo fuzz...

Not really enough info on your setup for a recommendation.

Lights in a pendant? Hood/canopy? Open backed? Closed? Fans?, ect., ect.

Closer the better.... If you can get your bulb(s) a couple inches off the surface of the water without heat issues or them getting wet... then GOODY! ;)

i will be building a canopy for them. i was thinking of cutting some plexi to fit over the top of the tank between the lights and the water too, so how close to the water is not an issue if i am trying to get them closer to the water. i just thought that i might of needed them higher off the water or something. i will not have fans if that helps too.

I'd use glass not plexi...plexi warps badly with the heat. And you should at least plan for a fan when summer temps come along. I have 110 watts on my 20 and it definately needs a fan during warmer times of the year.

i have AC in the house so the temp in the house does not get that hot. still wondering how tall i should make the canopy thought. that is basically what i am getting at. i guess if i eventually will need a fan how big are fans. just in case i ever end up moving the tank down the road to my own house.
